    PERONISM AND ANTI-PERONISM: SOCIAL-CULTURAL BASES OF POLITICAL IDENTITY IN ARGENTINA PIERRE OSTIGUY University of California at Berkeley Department of Political Science 210 Barrows Hall Berkeley, CA 94720 [email protected] Paper presented at the LASA meeting, in Guadalajara, Mexico, on April 18, 1997 This paper is about political identity and the related issue of types of political appeals in the public arena. It thus deals with a central aspect of political behavior, regarding both voters' preferences and identification, and politicians' electoral strategies. Based on the case of Argentina, it shows the at times unsuspected but unmistakable impact of class-cultural, and more precisely, social-cultural differences on political identity and electoral behavior. Arguing that certain political identities are social-culturally based, this paper introduces a non-ideological, but socio-politically significant, axis of political polarization. As observed in the case of Peronism and anti-Peronism in Argentina, social stratification, particularly along an often- used compound, in surveys, of socio-economic status and education,1 is tightly associated with political behavior, but not so much in Left-Right political terms or even in issue terms (e.g. socio- economic platforms or policies), but rather in social-cultural terms, as seen through the modes and type of political appeals, and figuring centrally in certain already constituted political identities. Forms of political appeals may be mapped in terms of a two-dimensional political space, defined by the intersection of this social-cultural axis with the traditional Left-to-Right spectrum. Also, since already constituted political identities have their origins in the successful "hailing"2 of pluri-facetted people and groups, such a bi-dimensional space also maps political identities.

Jorge Luis BERNETTI Parte I PRIMERA PLANA: LA MODERNIZACIÓN SEMANARIA El investigador norteamericano Gerald Stone observa que "la industria de los medios de comunicación presta poca atención a la investigación académica en la que existe gran cantidad de información con poco uso. Entre otras razones porque a su juicio gran parte del objeto de investigación es ininteligible no sólo para los no idóneos, sino para aquellos que no trabajan la misma área y porque la decisión acerca del tipo de estudio está muy influída por lo que trabajan los propios colegas. Se diría que sobra teoría y faltan análisis pormenorizados. Más que distancia hay un abismo entre la preocupación académica y la preocupación profesionali". Es al calor de esta preocupación que el estudio de medios (gráficos, radiales, televisivos y ahora informáticos) tanto nacionales como internacionales, se convierte en un imperativo demandado no solamente por "la industria" sino por los estudiantes de periodismo y comunicación. Un caso que demanda mucho mayores esfuerzos que los desplegados hasta el presente es el de la revista semanaria bonaerense Primera Plana. La aparición a fines de 1962 del semanario Primera Plana significó un punto de inflexión en el proceso de modernización del periodismo argentino; de manera significativa en el universo de la gráfica y específicamente en el de los semanarios; pero su influencia afectó al conjunto de los medios masivos nacionales. Constituyó, al mismo tiempo, una expresión del complejo y contradictorio clima cultural de la época signado contradictoriamente por fuertes giros regresivos y ascendentes movimientos revolucionarios.

    A CONSOLIDAÇÃO DA DITADURA NO BRASIL SEGUNDO A VISÃO DE BERNARDO NEUSTADT NA REVISTA ARGENTINA TODO (1964-1965) Helder Gordim da Silveira1 Introdução O presente artigo resulta de um projeto de pesquisa que busca examinar a repercussão ideológica do Golpe de Estado e do regime ditatorial implantado no Brasil, em 1964, na imprensa informativa empresarial argentina, destacando-se aqui a revista Todo e o papel de seu fundador e diretor, Bernardo Neustadt, na construção das notícias internacionais acerca daquele contexto político brasileiro, direcionadas ao público leitor argentino. O exame do discurso jornalístico, como forma simbólica entrecruzada, pela construção do sentido, com os sistemas contextuais de poder, embasou-se na perspectiva teórica associada ao conceito de ideologia, atualizado em John Thompson.2 Nessa direção, aponta-se para a hipótese básica aqui trabalhada, segundo a qual a construção narrativa-interpretativa das notícias acerca dos acontecimentos que consolidavam a ordem ditatorial no Brasil atuou potencialmente como uma ideologia da solução autoritária, que ocorreria com o golpe de 1966, para a crise sociopolítica argentina. Situamos aqui, com Pierre Nora,3 a progressiva aproximação, inclusive no campo epistemológico, entre a notícia, como categoria jornalística, e o acontecimento, como uma forma essencial de apreensão imaginária do real no mundo contemporâneo. O lugar institucional de emissão de tal forma discursiva é a aqui denominada “imprensa informativa empresarial”, uma referência genérica aos jornais diários e revistas, com forma, conteúdo e natureza organizacional resultantes da transição que se verifica, grosso modo, a partir das décadas finais do século dezenove, com origem marcada nos Estados Unidos e com reflexos imediatos na Europa e na América Latina.

Fue... como sea, pocos años después, con Richard Nixon y su brazo derecho, Henry Kissinger,en el gobierno de los EE.UU. La decisión de Perón de incluir a Villalón en la conducción creó cierto malestar en los grupos más moderados del peronismo que consideraban que Villalón estaba demasiado identificado con los grupos izquierdistas. Ignoraban que Villalón, gracias a sus contactos con sectores del Tercer Mundo, había logrado ante el gobierno francés de Charles de Gaulle un permiso permanente para visitar Francia. Perón por supuesto, era actualidad, las revistas políticas tenían dos columnas: "política nacional" y "peronismo". La revista "Extra", en su número de diciembre publica un largo reportaje a Perón con un título que nada tiene que ver con el reportaje: ¿Qué hay entre Perón y Onganía? Este es el reportaje de Bernardo Neustadt con Juan Domingo Perón. PERÓN DEFINE A ONGANÍA... Y OTROS TEMAS Eran las 9 de la mañana. Perón había ya caminado sus 5 kilómetros diarios. Me impresionó su estado físico.
