OWIE was born in 1941, brought up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and bt Louis, Missouri, and began playing at the age of five. At sixteen he led a youth group in St. Louis and used to practice his trumpet by an open window in the hope that Louis Armstrong might pass by and discover him. After military service he worked with r&b bands and also with his wife, singer Fontella Bass. He played on r&b sessions for Chess Records and also helped to form BAG (Black Artists Group) and the Great Black Music Orchestra in St Louis. In 1996 he moved to Chicago, got involved with AACM, Association for the Advancement of Creative Music, and joined the band of saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. In the later 1960s he and Mitchell were founder-members of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, one of the key groups of the 1970s and '80s. In 1969 Bowie recorded with Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, Jimmy Lyons and Cecil Taylor, among others. He has also done intermittent solo projects and recordings over the years He composed, conducted and at the 1970 Frankfurt jazz festival. In 1974 he toured Senegal, performing with African drummers and in 1979 played a New York concert with his 59-piece Sho Nuff Orchestra. -

S0480 Hayes, Bernard (1935- ), Papers, 1961-1989, 16 Folders, 2 Audio Tapes This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. Bernard Hayes, news director for KWMU Radio, loaned his scrapbooks and papers for copying to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on November 29, 1989. Bernie Hayes began his radio career in the Air Force in 1950 as an announcer for the Armed Forces Radio Service. After his military service, Hayes returned to the University of Illinois and graduated with a degree in journalism. In 1956 he began work as the black on-air personality and first black news announcer for a radio station in Alexandria, Louisiana. Hayes went on to other broadcasting jobs in New York and New Jersey in 1961 and in Chicago throughout 1962 and 1963. In Chicago, Hayes worked for WMMP, the first black- owned radio station in the midwest; WSBC and WGES, narrowcast stations that programmed for ethnic areas within the city; and WVON ("Voice of the Negro"), a radio station owned by the Chess brothers, whose record label featured such blues and rock artists as Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. Hayes moved to San Francisco in 1964 and joined the staff of KSOL, a soul music station. Hayes also worked as a producer and recording artist for Volt, a subsidiary of the soul music label, Stax Records. Hayes arrived in St. Louis in April 1965, working first for KXLW and then as an announcer for KATZ, a black music station. -

Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.
