The majority of married members of the Community are gainfully employed and are involved in society in various ways.

In apostolic life, couples and celibates share responsibilities together. In this way, within the Community, work and prayer unite lay-people and celibates in order to serve the Gospel together.

12 - Who we are 13 The Spirituality of the Community

he spirituality of the Community is rooted both in Tthe Ignatian tradition and in the experience of the Charismatic Renewal.

The practice of the Spiritual Exercises and Ignatian discernment structures our prayer as well as our actions and our way of living.

We believe in the Holy Spirit and our desire is to listen to him and to be led by him personally and as a Community.

Both the spirituality of the Charismatic Renewal and that of the Exercises of Saint express the certainty that “God can communicate himself directly to his creatures” and act effectively in people’s lives.

The solidity of the Community depends upon the personal relationship of each one of us with Jesus. “ Community Constitutions, p. 16 14 - The Spirituality of the Community ” 15 Ignatian Baptism in the Spirituality Holy Spirit

16 - The Spirituality of the Community ” 17 A Passion for Unity

he Community, from its beginnings, was marked by the presence of brothers and sisters from several TChristian denominations, and it seeks to be faithful to the prayer Jesus said before dying, “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21).

The brothers and sisters of the Community are members of the Roman , Orthodox Churches, Anglican Communion, Reformed Churches, Lutheran, Evangelical and Pentecostal Churches. They choose to live, pray and evangelise together, without giving up their own identity, and remain in communion with their respective Churches.

We dare to believe in the visible unity of the Church, and we have received a call to work for that unity with all our strength. […] The presence of brothers and sisters of different denominations at the heart of the Community confirms and encourages us in our vocation to Unity, just as it requires “us to be constantly purified in our attitudes and our intentions - even in our choice of vocabulary.

Community Constitutions, p. 20 and 24

“May they all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in” you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” Jn 17:21

“This unity, which the Lord has bestowed on his Church and in which he wishes to embrace all people, is not something added on, but stands at the very heart of Christ’s mission. Nor is it some secondary attribute of the community of his disciples. Rather, it belongs to the very essence of this community. God wills the Church, because he wills unity.” John Paul II, Ut Unum Sint, n° 9

18 - The Spirituality of the Community 19 The International Ecumenical Fraternity A

ounded in 2000, the International Ecumenical Fraternity is a Spirituality Fnetwork for prayer, formation and evangelisation. Its members commit themselves to pray, learn and work in favour of of the Cross unity and peace between our Churches and countries. and of Unity More specifically, every month the Community produces a thirty- minute documentary film on a particular topic which opens us up to issues regarding peace and unity around the world.

Translated into 26 languages, this documentary film is common to all and is sent to over 1000 ‘Net Points’ spread over nearly 80 countries. Each ‘Net Point’ brings together people of all generations and of different Christian denominations who respond to Christ’s call, “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21).

Our Community began at a time of division, racially moti- vated conflict and ethnic wars (genocide), which inflict lasting wounds on all humanity. 22 - The Spirituality of the Community 23 Brother or sister, if you commit yourself “with us, it is solely because of Christ and the Gospel Community Constitutions, p. 13” In the Shadow of the Spirit

don’t know how many couples, in the 50 countries where Cana I Sessions take place every year, have the privilege of coming before the Lord for six days and experience the joy of renewing their marriage bonds. I don’t know how many students experience Baptism in the Spirit during their stay in one of the residences run by our Community. I don’t know for how much longer Christians of good will, working towards and offering their lives for the unity of the Church, will expect the prayer Jesus addressed to his Father before dying, to be answered: “Father may they be one so that the world may believe that you sent me” (Jn 17:21)…

What I do know is that Jesus himself said several times that God the Father always answers the prayers of his Son.

I don’t know how much longer the Chemin Neuf Community will exist... It is modestly written in our Constitutions (p. 15) that our Community “is one small part of a larger body, which is the Church, and will one day cease to exist”. It seems to me, however, that it will last a long time!

As long as there are couples who really need to experience reconciliation through a Cana Session, as long as Christians are still divided, there will be men and women, from different Christian denominations, who will feel called to give their lives for this great cause, so precious and so necessary, that is Unity!

If our Community remains humbly faithful to its vocation, it will continue to grow quietly in the shadow of the Spirit.

When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up “to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ ” www.chemin-neuf.org
