TCDD chosed 25 KV AC, 50 Hz monophase catenary system for this line and for all the other lines that were turned into electrified lines. Closely following this development in the world, TCDD purchased DE20000 type mainline locomotives from GE in 1957. After these developments, TCDD mostly preferred diesel electrical locomotives for mainlines and most of these locomotives were manufactured in the facilities of TÜLOMSAŞ under the license of the main producers. Applications of this system which was first executed starting from 1980s were closely followed by TCDD and DE11000 type locomotives some of which were equipped with this traction system were purchased in 1985 from KRAUSS MAFFEI/BBC. These locomotives had an advanced electronic control system and most of them were produced in TÜLOMSAŞ under the license of the manufacturer. Taking the widespread use of the propulsion systems with ac powered asynchronous traction motors into account, TCDD demanded this system for the YHT 65000 type high speed train sets which are purchased to be used between Ankara-İstanbul and for the E23000 type suburban emus which are purchased to be operated between Sincan-Kayaş. Mohamed Reda Sbeinati (1), Ryad Darawcheh (1) and Mikhail Mouty (2) (1) Department of Geology, Atomic Energy Commission of Syria, Damascus, Syria (2) Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Damascus University, Damascus, Syria Abstract The historical sources of large and moderate earthquakes, earthquake catalogues and monographs exist in many depositories in Syria and European centers. They have been studied, and the detailed review and analysis re- sulted in a catalogue with 181 historical earthquakes from 1365 B.C. to 1900 A.D. Numerous original documents in Arabic, Latin, Byzantine and Assyrian allowed us to identify seismic events not mentioned in previous works. In particular, detailed descriptions of damage in Arabic sources provided quantitative information necessary to re-evaluate past seismic events. These large earthquakes (I0>VIII) caused considerable damage in cities, towns and villages located along the northern section of the Dead Sea fault system. Fewer large events also occurred along the Palmyra, Ar-Rassafeh and the Euphrates faults in Eastern Syria. Descriptions in original sources doc- ument foreshocks, aftershocks, fault ruptures, liquefaction, landslides, tsunamis, fires and other damages. We present here an updated historical catalogue of 181 historical earthquakes distributed in 4 categories regarding the originality and other considerations, we also present a table of the parametric catalogue of 36 historical earth- quakes (table I) and a table of the complete list of all historical earthquakes (181 events) with the affected lo- cality names and parameters of information quality and completeness (table II) using methods already applied in other regions (Italy, England, Iran, Russia) with a completeness test using EMS-92.

    AMMIANUS MARCELLINUS AND THE NISIBENE HANDOVER OF A.D. 363 Susannah Belcher Abstract This article focuses on the Roman Emperor Jovian’s handover of Nisibis to the Persian King Shapur II in A.D. 363. This event is presented by an eyewitness, Ammianus Marcellinus, as a definitive moment in the history of the Roman State: when the empire’s endurance diverges substantially from her age-old pact with Iustitia (which he defines as the presiding causative deity) towards deeds which contravene the historian’s ideal of Rome and the responsibility of her agents to further her interests. Alongside this wider interpretation, the article considers the trauma of the handover for citizens of the strategically important city of Nisibis, and the contrasting portrait painted by Ephrem. et principe permittente Romano, civitatem ingressus, gentis suae signum ab arce extulit summa, migrationem e patria civibus nuntians luctuosam. With the permission of the Roman emperor, he entered the city and raised the flag of his nation on the top of the citadel, announcing to the citizens their sorrowful departure from their native place. (Amm. Marc. 25.9.1). So Ammianus Marcellinus begins his account of the handover of the citadel of Nisibis to the Persians in A.D. 363.1 The Roman Emperor Jovian ceded Nisibis, Orientis firmissimum claustrum,2 to the Persian King Shapur II, along with Singara, some 15 other fortified sites in the Mesopotamian region, 5 satrapies along the Upper Tigris,3 and the concession that the Romans would not intervene on behalf of their client king in Armenia. This shameful treaty 4 was extracted from the hastily-elevated Jovian pro redemptione nostra,5 for the price of safe passage for Julian’s defeated Roman army, of which Ammianus was a part.
