Uskontotiede Lokakuu 2018 Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten yliluonnollista hyvyyttä ja pahuutta esitetään American Horror Story -sarjan kolmella ensimmäisellä kaudella. Teoreettisen viiteke- hyksen muodostavista käsitteistä uskonnon mediatisaatio sekä uskonto ja populaarikult- tuuri tarjoavat työlle teoreettisen pohjan ja tutkimuksellisen kontekstin. Banaali uskonto -käsitteen kautta tarkastellaan miten sarja uudelleen kierrättää, yhdistää ja muokkaa pahuuden ja hyvyyden esityksiä. Yliluonnollisen pahuuden ja hyvyyden käsitteet rajaa- vat mihin aineistossa keskityn. Aineistoa lähestytään sisällönanalyysin keinoin. Yliluonnollinen pahuuden kohdalla keskitytään erityisesti aaveisiin (kausi 1), paholai- seen (kausi 2) ja noitiin (kausi 3). Monia kulttuurissa ja populaarikulttuurissa ilmeneviä perinteisiä teemoja kierrättämällä AHS tarjoaa pitkälti hyvin perinteisen esityksen kai- kista kolmesta kategoriasta. Kolmesta kaudesta vain toisella esiintyvä kuolemanenkeli on selkeä yliluonnolliselle pahuudelle vastakkainen yliluonnollisen hyvyyden edustaja. Jumalan kykyjen ihmishahmoisina sijaisina nähtävissä olevat ensimmäisen kauden meediohahmo ja toisen kauden katolisen papin hahmo ovat voimiltaan rajoittuneita ja vähäisiä. Kolmannella kaudella esiintyvät voodookuningattaren ja -jumalan hahmot eivät näyttäydy selkeästi yliluonnollisen hyvyyden tai pahuuden edustajina. Ensimmäisellä ja kolmannella kaudella aaveiden ja noitien uudempien kuvaamisen tee- mojen kierrättäminen lieventää yliluonnollisen pahuuden ja hyvyyden binaarista opposi- tioasetelmaa. Pahuus ei ole absoluuttista, joten aaveita ja noitia voisi yliluonnollisen pahuuden edustajien sijaan kutsua sekä enemmän hyvään että pahaan suuntautuvia hahmoja sisältäviksi yliluonnollisten toimijoiden kategorioiksi. Paholaisen kohdalla absoluuttiset ja binaariset pahuuden ja hyvyyden asetelmat säilyvät ennallaan. Tämä perinteinen absoluuttisesti paha paholaisen hahmo ilmenee myös ensimmäisellä kaudel- la, jolla paholaisen voi nähdä nousevan primaariksi pahuuden edustajaksi. AHS ilmentää populaarikulttuurin tapaa torjua institutionalisoitujen uskontojen auktori- teetti, erityisesti kristinuskon voimattomana kuvaamisen kautta. Täten uskonnon me- diatisaation teorian institutionaalisen painotuksen läpi katsottuna AHS:n voi nähdä insti- tutionalisoidun uskonnon asemaa murentaessaan ilmentävän sekularisaatiota. Institutio- naalista painotusta lievennettäessä yhteiskunnan mediatisaation myötä syntyvät uuden- laiset uskonnon muodot voidaan kuitenkin nähdä merkityksellisinä, jolloin laajan vari- aation erilaisia uskonnollisia konsepteja kierrättävällä, muokkaavalla ja yhdistävällä AHS:lla on potentiaali vaikuttaa muun muassa ihmisten ”uskonnolliseen lukutaitoon”. Täten uudenlaisten vaihtoehtoisten ja yksilöllistettyjen uskonnon/henkisyyden muotojen syntyyn potentiaalisesti vaikuttavan AHS:n voi sekularisaation prosessin sijaan nähdä osallistuvan uskonnon elinvoimaisena säilyttämiseen nykyaikaisissa yhteiskunnallisissa ja kulttuurisissa ympäristöissä. minkälaisia yliluonnollisen pahuuden ja hyvyy- den esityksiä on löydettävissä American Horror Story -sarjasta1. AHS on vuonna 2011 alkanut yhdysvaltalainen antologiasarja, jonka jokainen kausi esittelee uuden tarinan ja uudet hahmot. Yhä tänä päivänä jatkuvasta sarjasta on tähän mennessä ilmestynyt seit- semän tuotantokautta: 1. kummitustalossa tapahtuva, fanien postuumisti nimeämä Mur- der House (2011), 2. mielisairaalaan sijoittuva Asylum (2012–2013), 3. noitapiiristä kertova Coven (2013–2014), 4. ”kummajaissirkuksen” esiintyjiin keskittyvä Freak Show (2014–2015), 5. hotelliin sijoittuva Hotel (2015–2016), 6. Roanoake Islandissa tapahtuva Roanoke (2016) ja 7. vuoden 2016 presidentinvaalien jälkeisistä tapahtumista kertova Cult (2017). Kauhugenreä edustavalle sarjalle ominaista ovat yhden kauden aikana esiintyvät moni- naiset alajuonet, jotka mahdollistavat tarinan hyppimisen eri aikakausilla.

    Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics.
