  • Alejandro Malaspina and the Perils of Projection by Troy Karnes on August 31, 1789, Alejandro Malaspina Reflected on the Deterio
1 Alejandro Malaspina and the Perils of Projection By Troy Karnes On August 31, 1789, Alejandro Malaspina reflected on the deteriorating health of one of his marines. Ten days after his expedition left Cádiz the man became sick with venereal disease. This surprised Malaspina, who had described the man as “irreproachable.” Unwilling to besmirch his honor, the marine never disclosed his illness to the ship’s surgeon. In consequence, the disease progressed rapidly, and “after a month of unspeakable suffering, all his strength abandoned him, and left him unable to withstand the suppuration of the gangrene.”1 The marine ultimately died of his illness, a common occurrence among eighteenth century seamen. In that respect, his story is unremarkable. But here it bears on my subject as a symbol of the difficulties that Spain faced in decline. Much like attending to the sick marine, curing Spanish decline, as Malaspina saw it, had three stages: history, diagnosis, and treatment. Malaspina believed that a successful remedy depended on attaining an imperforated understanding of the colonies. Knowledge became an important tool that countries plied in the late eighteenth century in order to make claims about overseas territories.2 Spain had become marginal in the eighteenth century, and it wanted to increase its power by accumulating information about its colonies. It believed that knowledge equaled power, though this is not the case, at least not with Malaspina, whose writings remained sealed by royal order for ninety-one years after he returned to Spain.3 Malaspina had a slightly more sophisticated, though still instrumental, view of knowledge.

  • The Malaspina Expedition (1789-1794) in Republican Chile
Historia. vol.1 no.se Santiago 2006 THE NATIONAL INFLUENCE OF AN IMPERIAL ENTERPRISE: THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION (1789-1794) IN REPUBLICAN CHILE ANDRÉS ESTEFANE JARAMILLO* Abstract The research done by members of the Malaspina Expedition (1789-1794) during their stay in Chile was not only useful in that same period, but also in post- colonial era. In 19th century, republican authorities had to recur to the information recompiled by the scientific expeditions of the Illustration – and especially that of Malaspina – to complete the lack of up to date information in geographical matters, to solve territorial disputes with neighboring countries and to start new explorations aimed to know the exact characteristics of regions recently joined to national sovereignty. The continuing recovery of the expeditions` registers create a new link between the last century of colonial domination and the first century of our republican history, a moment in which science would play a main role in the recuperation and reinterpretation of the meaning of geographical knowledge from the previous century. During the 19th century, the nations of Latin America made a continuous effort to recover the research done by several scientific expeditions that arrived to America during the last century of colonial domination. The lack of up to date information and the need for details about the characteristics and economic potentials of those territories, aroused in republican authorities the interest to recover any information from the past that might be useful to the needs of the new political reality. The dazzling sense of urgency with which ethnographic observations, botanical and zoological notes, essays on mineralogy, iconography and surveys on cartography were recompiled, confirm the intensity with which this task was undertaken; not only investigating in local archives, but also financing recurrent visits to libraries and collections of documents in Europe.

THE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE AND THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION ABSTRACT In the year 1788 a project was conceived and started to take shape. • An Eighteenth Century Joint Survey on the North-West
INTERNATIONAL HYDROGRAPHIC REVIEW MAY 2010 AN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY JOINT SURVEY ON THE NORTH-WEST COAST OF AMERICA BY BRITISH AND SPANISH SURVEYORS By Andrew David Abstract When the British surveying expedition under George Vancouver met a similar Spanish expedition under Dionisio Alcalà Galiano in June 1792 off Birch Bay, on the coast of present day USA state of Washington, they agreed to carry out a joint survey of the waters to the north of the Strait of Georgia. The resulting survey is a very early example of co-operation in hydrographic surveying between nations. It also highlighted the difficulties they encountered, Résumé Lorsque l‘expédition hydrographique britannique conduite par George Vancouver a croisé la route de l‘expédition espagnole similaire, conduite par Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, en juin 1792 au large de Birch Bay, sur la côte qui correspond aujourd‘hui à l‘Etat de Washington (USA), il fut décidé qu‘un levé conjoint serait exécuté dans les eaux situées au Nord du détroit de Georgia.
