To my close friends who I really learnt one or two things in my course of relationship with them, Fahad, Baffour, Sree, Alexis, just to mention but a few. 4 ABSTRACT Rail privatisation 1s a contentious issue m the UK due to the political implications associated with rail privatisation. Findings from the literature suggests that it can have positive and negative effects on passengers' experiences and satisfaction. This study assessed the impact of rail privatisation of London Overground on passengers' satisfaction in the rail service by collecting and analysing primary data from 150 passengers and 50 staff of London Overground. Data was collected and analysed to test the research framework and research hypotheses developed in the study. Analysis using SPSS involved the utilisation of correlation and multinomial logistic regression analyses. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the perceived effectiveness of rail privatisation has a strong association with customer satisfaction after rail privatisation. The results indicate that customers who have a positive outlook towards rail privatisation were 33.1 % more likely to be satisfied with London Overground after rail privatisation than customers who have a negative outlook towards rail privatisation. This association is statistically significant at .000 levels. The implication of this result points to the importance of perceived effectiveness of rail privatisation in determining the level of passengers' satisfaction in the service and therefore places high value on the outcomes of rail privatisation among passengers in order to enhance their satisfaction. The results of the study are based on the assessment of the effect of perceived effectiveness of rail privatisation and hence cannot be objectively considered as an evaluation of the results of rail privatisation in London Overground. Despite this, the results of the study indicate that the perceived effectiveness of rail privatisation holds a key role in defining passenger satisfaction among the customers of London Overground. 5     EDITED PRESS RELEASES TRANSPORT FOR LONDON LONDON UNDERGROUND Restoration of landmark façade complete at King’s Cross St. Pancras 7 September 2006 Renovation of the Grade 1 listed, 130 year old Gothic façade at St. Pancras station has received a major boost with completion of extensive restoration works on the historic Pancras Chambers façade which now forms the exterior to the new Western ticket hall at King’s Cross St. Pancras Underground station. The work, which has taken five years to complete, was undertaken as part of TfL’s £10bn Investment Programme to improve and expand London’s transport network. As part of the ongoing redevelopment of King’s Cross St. Pancras Underground station, a new Western ticket hall has been constructed underneath the forecourt of the Pancras Chambers, doubling the Underground station’s capacity. This extensive construction work had to be carried out whilst carefully protecting the forecourt’s façade. London Underground worked closely with English Heritage and the London Borough of Camden in order to ensure that appropriate conservation techniques were implemented, enabling this section of the landmark building to be returned to its original condition. 4,500 environmental readings were analysed every week to make certain the heritage building’s tolerance levels for movement were not exceeded. The façade walls are made up stonework fittings and over 200,000 heritage bricks. During construction many heritage items had to be carefully labelled, removed and stored. Specialist restorers, Szerelmey Ltd., undertook a condition survey of the existing material, under the guidance of English Heritage, and produced full layout drawings, templates and moulds to reproduce the missing or badly damaged units.

Although currently operated by Silverlink, the line is to be part of the new West Midlands franchise, due to commence on 11 November 2007. The Community Rail Partnership is seeking to increase the frequency of services on the route, to a half-hourly level, thus requiring a second trainset and passing loop to be installed. The CRP therefore commissioned The Railway Consultancy to undertake a series of passenger counts and surveys of passenger travel patterns, in order to provide a basis on which business planning might be undertaken. E2 Analysis of passenger usage on the line was based upon surveying all weekday and weekend services once during May 2006. This encompassed the counting and alighting of boarders at every Abbey Line station and a series of on-train counts. In addition, a questionnaire was distributed to passengers. A total of 1300 forms were distributed; by the closing date of 9 th June 2006, a total of 496 survey forms were returned completed, representing a response rate of 38%. E3 Count data across the survey period revealed that passenger numbers on the line were somewhat disappointing. The total number of boarders (i.e. across both directions) for weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays were respectively around 1300, 1000 and 450 per day.

During the current London Government Boundary Commission Executive (LGBCE) review process, it has become clear to us that since the previous review in 2000, warding levels have developed out of balance. Brent Council meets the Commission’s criteria for electoral inequality with 7 wards having a variance outside 10%. The outliers are Brondesbury Park at -16% and Tokyngton at 28%. Electoral review process The electoral review will have two distinct parts: Council size – The Brent conservative group welcomes to reduce the number of councillors to 57 from current 63. We appreciate that this will require some existing wards to be redrawn, and recognise that this will represent an opportunity to examine whether the existing boundaries are an appropriate reflection of how Brent has developed since 2000. This route will eventually continue on to North Woolwich with the addition of other features planned in the future. It is modelled as it would have looked during 2004 – 2006 in the height of the Silverlink Metro era just before the closure of the section to North Woolwich. In 2007 it became part of TFL as part of their London Overground network and was extensively modernised beyond recognition shortly thereafter. The Train Our train is a class 313 EMU built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at the Holgate Road Carriage Works between 1976 and 1977. Originally designed for the Great Northern lines, they were used on various routes during their many years of service. Some were transferred to the North London Line during the 1980s and were inherited by Silverlink Trains after privatisation. In addition, these trains are used on the West London and Watford DC Lines as well as the St Albans Abbey – Watford Junction service.     THE EAST LONDON LINE EXTENSION PROJECT After being talked about for so many years, the East London Line Extension Project (ELLP) is now set to become a reality. Back in 1988 when the individual ‘Line General Manager’ concept was created by London Underground, replacing the ‘Divisional’ structure (four groups of lines), the then new General Manager for the East London Line was confident that the proposed scheme was “just around the corner”, having been first seriously proposed in 1985. Sadly, that General Manager did not stay with London Underground long enough to see the project kick off – many years later. (The creation of a General Manager for the East London Line caused a bit of consternation at the time. With its offices soon established at Shadwell, it was soon recognised that the line employed more managers than they operated trains!). From 1991, the management of the East London Line has been tacked on to the Jubilee Line but, more recently, broke away from the Jubilee and instead combined with the Waterloo & City Line. The management of the East London and Waterloo & City lines today still exceeds the number of trains scheduled for service on both lines (six and four respectively) although each line has its own identity and line colour. Prior to becoming a ‘line’ in its own right it had traditionally and unassumedly been part of the Metropolitan Line, having carried that line’s colour until 1988, when it became ‘orange’ (some publicity at the time made references to the Tango orange drink!), as did the Hammersmith & City Line, which became a sort of salmon pink.
