Cultures of Coloniality: Latina/O Writing in Canada by Gabrielle Cultures of Coloniality: Latina/o Writing in Canada by Gabrielle Etcheverry A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Canadian Studies Carleton University, Ottawa Ontario © 2015 Gabrielle Etcheverry ABSTRACT This study examines Latina/o Canadian literature and drama dealing with the themes of exile, migration, acculturation, and hybrid cultural identities, while also analyzing the national and transnational contexts in which these texts are produced. My study contends that the scant critical attention that this substantial and significant body of literature has received is due to its existence at the margins of dominant Anglo-Canadian national cultural discourses and transnational Latina/o cultural formations. In order to understand this relationship between the national and the transnational, I investigate how multilingual Latina/o Canadian writers and texts negotiate their hemispheric positions and affiliations, as well as how essentialized, U.S.-based definitions of latinidad obscure specific Latina/o experiences and literary practices in Canada. Further, I suggest that a decolonial hemispheric framework is particularly useful for understanding literature written by Latin Americans in North America and for mapping some of the connections and disjunctures between national and transnational literatures in rapidly changing “post”-colonial societies. My study of Latina/o Canadian literature considers differing sites, practices, and genres in order to demonstrate both the diversity of this body of writing and its changing place on the sometimes intersecting margins of national and transnational literary and cultural formations. Thus, this study encompasses analyses of exilic poetry, diasporic drama, travel writing, and memoir in Spanish, English, and French from the late 18th century to the present. While such differences in timeframe and genre point to the heterogeneity of Latina/o cultural production and experience, I argue that their shared thematic concerns nevertheless connect these texts across languages, generations, and national borders. In this way, my study makes a timely intervention in the fields of Latina/o, hemispheric, and critical Canadian cultural studies. National literatures have often been equated with a specific national culture, language, and identity. However, the rise of ethnic “minority” and migrant literatures in the late twentieth-century has increasingly troubled this facile understanding of national literature. As Walter Mignolo writes, “migratory movements are disarticulating the idea of national languaging and, indirectly, of national literacies and literatures […] The notion of homogeneous national cultures and the consensual transmission of historical and literary traditions, as well as of unadulterated ethnic communities, are in the process of profound revisions and redefinitions” (236). Mass migration through globalization and other transnational movements, thus, is not only challenging ideas of homogenous national cultures and literary traditions, but also the very idea of a fixed linguistic identity tied to “authentic” culture. Despite these cultural shifts and the supposed demise of the nation in the context of globalization, my research explores the ways in which the national still operates in the literary, particularly in terms of identity construction and the position (or absence) of minoritized, multilingual literatures within significant cultural institutions, such as national arts organizations and 1 mainstream literary criticism.1 At the same time, I situate the national within larger hemispheric contexts, especially Latina/o Canadian literature’s place at the juncture of national and transnational literatures and cultures. In this way, my study of Latina/o Canadian cultural production also highlights the ways in which the transnational “Latino” identifier is an increasingly unsatisfactory category of socio-cultural classification and analysis. In order to understand these broader issues of the intersection between national and transnational cultures and identities in a hemispheric context, I examine Latina/o Canadian literature to demonstrate how symbolic markers and material relations of modern identity such as nation, space, history, and language are embedded and negotiated in Latina/o Canadian writing. I argue that the so-called postcolonial nation remains a key site in the overlapping imaginaries (Appadurai 5), or culturally constructed identities, in which Latina/o Canadian literature is enmeshed. Moreover, the transnational Latina/o cultural formation with which this literature also intersects imposes an overarching cultural identity that nevertheless elides its particularities and diversity. This literature’s specific intersection within dominant Anglo-Canadian national cultural discourses and transnational Latina/o cultural formations, then, ensures its relative invisibility in hemispheric literary and cultural contexts. As such, Latina/o Canadian literature provides a striking example of coloniality—or the “long-standing patterns of 1 Canadian postcolonial criticism has played a productive and distinguished role in analyzing “multicultural,” “ethnic” and Indigenous literatures in this country (see for example Cynthia Sugars, ed. By investigating exemplary Latina/o Canadian literary texts and practices, as well as their encounters with national cultural institutions (the role of universities in canon formation, funding agencies, and government departments) and transnational cultural processes, I ask how specific ideals of Canadian national identity are reproduced in the Anglo-Canadian literary field and how such aspects of identity might be transgressed in Latina/o Canadian writing. I further explore how essentialized, U.S. -based definitions of latinidad and Latina/o culture and identity obscure the specific Latina/o experiences and literary practices in Canada. In so doing, I am contributing to a growing body of work in Latina/o studies that has emerged in the United States over the last decade and which elucidates how current constructions of Latina/o identity erase important distinctions among Latina/os within the U.S. itself. Where much of this work has focused on the ways in which the socio-cultural “Latino” category essentializes diverse national, classed, gendered, and racialized experiences and identities within U.S. national borders, I posit that

The Circeo National Park lies in a territory that was deeply shaped by human activity, and represents one of the few remaining patches of plain wetland habitat in Central Italy. In this study distribution and few demographic information of the amphibians in the Park were provided. Seven species and 25 bibliographic and 84 original breeding sites were recorded, and population size estimations were carried out for a population of these three species: Pelophylax sinkl esculentus, Bufo balearicus and Rana dalmatina. For the studied populations of pool frog and green toad the oper- ational sex ratio and the demographic effective population size was also estimated. For Rana dalmatina, which is strictly associated to forest environment, a positive and significant correlation between the number of egg clutches and maxi- mum depth of the swamps was found. The State plain forest is the most important habitat for amphibians’ conservation in the park. The occurrence of dangerous alien species was investigated and they are evaluated as the major threat for amphibians in the park, especially the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the State plain forest.

    Three main groups of people settled on or near the Italian peninsula and influenced Roman civilization. The Latins settled west of the Apennine Mountains and south of the Tiber River around 1000 B.C.E. While there were many advantages to their location near the river, frequent flooding also created problems. The Latin’s’ settlements were small villages built on the “Seven Hills of Rome”. These settlements were known as Latium. The people were farmers and raised livestock. They spoke their own language which became known as Latin. Eventually groups of these people united and formed the city of Rome. Latin became its official language. The Etruscans About 400 years later, another group of people, the Etruscans, settled west of the Apennines just north of the Tiber River. Archaeologists believe that these people came from the eastern Mediterranean region known as Asia Minor (present day Turkey). By 600 B.C.E., the Etruscans ruled much of northern and central Italy, including the town of Rome. The Etruscans were excellent builders and engineers. Two important structures the Romans adapted from the Etruscans were the arch and the cuniculus. The Etruscan arch rested on two pillars that supported a half circle of wedge-shaped stones. The keystone, or center stone, held the other stones in place. A cuniculus was a long underground trench. Vertical shafts connected it to the ground above. Etruscans used these trenches to irrigate land, drain swamps, and to carry water to their cities. The Romans adapted both of these structures and in time became better engineers than the Etruscans.

For Canada, the desire to survive as a viable political entity, inde­ pendent of the powerful republic to the south, and to make actual the tremendous physical potential of the country, has forced the federal government to be particu­ larly concerned with immigration and immigration policy. However, because of periods of serious unemployment and because the Canadian people on the whole, in W. L. Mackenzie King's famous words, "do not wish as a result of mass immi­ gration to make a fundamental alteration in the character of our population"'! the Canadian government from 1945 to 1962 has carefully pursued a relatively flexible policy of restricted immigration. As would be expected, when there was considerable unemployment, as in 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 196I,2 the immigration authorities, by reducing the number of immigrant visas granted, placed a severe check on the flow of immi­ grants. It is interesting to note that, with only one exception (1957), whenever the yearly average of the percentage of labour force unemployed climbed to over 4 per cent, the following year witnessed a sharp decline in the number of immigrants.s But when there was a demand for workers, the authorities quickly removed many of the temporary restrictive barriers. During these years, all too infrequent in the last decade, the absence of restrictions made one member of Parliament remark, "If you put pants on a penguin, it could be admitted to this country."4 In spite of the evident great need for a much larger population, it would be irresponsible for any government in Ottawa to fly in the face of the opposition of the majority of Canadians by adopting a policy of unrestricted immigration.5 D.

However, the making of the Black diaspora in Canada has often been overlooked, and the use of sport to connect migrants to the homeland has been virtually ignored. This study uses African, Black and Caribbean diaspora lenses to examine the ways that first generation Caribbean-Canadians use cricket to maintain their association with people, places, spaces, and memories of home. In this multi-sited ethnography I examine a group I call the Mavericks Cricket and Social Club (MCSC), an assembly of first generation migrants from the Anglo-Caribbean. My objective to “follow the people” took me to parties, fundraising dances, banquets, and cricket games throughout the Greater Toronto Area on weekends from early May to late September in 2008 and 2009. I also traveled with approximately 30 MCSC members to observe and participate in tours and tournaments in Barbados, England, and St. Lucia and conducted 29 in- depth, semi-structured interviews with male players and male and female supporters. I found that the Caribbean diaspora is maintained through liming (hanging out) at cricket matches and social events. Speaking in their native Patois language, eating traditional Caribbean foods, and consuming alcohol are significant means of creating spaces in which Caribbean- Canadians can network with other members of the diaspora.

    The Ancient People of Italy Before the rise of Rome, Italy was a patchwork of different cultures. Eventually they were all subsumed into Roman culture, but the cultural uniformity of Roman Italy erased what had once been a vast array of different peoples, cultures, languages, and civilizations. All these cultures existed before the Roman conquest of the Italian Peninsula, and unfortunately we know little about any of them before they caught the attention of Greek and Roman historians. Aside from a few inscriptions, most of what we know about the native people of Italy comes from Greek and Roman sources. Still, this information, combined with archaeological and linguistic information, gives us some idea about the peoples that once populated the Italian Peninsula. Italy was not isolated from the outside world, and neighboring people had much impact on its population. There were several foreign invasions of Italy during the period leading up to the Roman conquest that had important effects on the people of Italy. First there was the invasion of Alexander I of Epirus in 334 BC, which was followed by that of Pyrrhus of Epirus in 280 BC. Hannibal of Carthage invaded Italy during the Second Punic War (218–203 BC) with the express purpose of convincing Rome’s allies to abandon her. After the war, Rome rearranged its relations with many of the native people of Italy, much influenced by which peoples had remained loyal and which had supported their Carthaginian enemies. The sides different peoples took in these wars had major impacts on their destinies. In 91 BC, many of the peoples of Italy rebelled against Rome in the Social War.

In particular, I focus on identifying those social and political institutions that governed relations between city‐ states at a time when Rome was becoming the most influential urban center in the area. I examine the evidence for burial gathered primarily from the past four decades or so of archaeological excavation in order to present first, a systematic account of the data and second, an analysis of these materials. I reveal that a high degree of variation was observed in funerary ritual across sites, and suggest that this points to a complex system of regional networks that allowed for the widespread travel of people and ideas. I view this as evidence for the openness of archaic societies in Latium, whereby people and groups seem to have moved across regions with what seems to have been a fair degree of mobility.
