Susan and I enjoyed a sojourn in Vietnam over the holidays where we visited our sister school, the Vietnam Australia School, on the occasion of their 10th anniversary. You might recall that our own Rowena Barnett is the Deputy Principal there for the next two years. We took some time to relax in beautiful Hoi An and then in Singapore on the way home. Image (middle): The Anniversary Concert which was something to behold. Image (right): I had the honour of addressing the community. It is very exciting to be part of another school year. I am sure your daughters are looking forward to the adventure of learning in the year ahead. We are receiving excellent news from our Year 12/2016 students on their matriculation to various courses of study. To read about their results, please click here I thought you might like to know what the first weeks of term look like: Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 January: Executive Planning Days Wednesday 25 January: New Staff Induction Day We welcomed all new PLC Sydney staff to join our community. To read about changes to PLC Sydney staff, please click here. Friday 27 January: Us and Us Day It is essential that we seek to build our community as the year commences. Looking after our staff is critical to our work as they care for our students. This day is a time to consider how we will feed our staff spiritually, physically and intellectually as the year commences. Monday 30 January: Planning Day A devotion is followed by the Principal’s Staff Briefing. The day is spent in planning. Tuesday 31 January: First Day for Boarders, Year 7 and new students The program for today includes a playground welcome, a formal meeting with parents and new students, various activities and orientation. The Boarders Welcome Dinner is in the evening. Wednesday 1 February: School for All All students return, looking good in their uniforms. A Years 4–12 Chapel starts the day. Junior School Parents meet under the Camphor laurel tree after lunch and there are Parent Information Evenings for Kindergarten and the Transition Class. Topics are aimed at engaging the curious minds of young students. Courses are offered as packages of two. The following courses are available in Term 1: • Currency in the Global Economy • Computer Science Learning to Code • Geographical Journey - Ancient Past and the Modern World Registrations close Tuesday 31 January 2017. Term 1 After School Courses Open to primary school aged students from any school looking to discover new learning areas outside the core curriculum. The following classes are available in Term 1: • Drama – Kindergarten to Year 2 • Drama – Years 3 to 6 • Mandarin Language Registrations close Tuesday 31 January 2017. Places are strictly limited. Connections 2017 Issue 1 Page 8 Important Information for Parents & Students Homework Club Booking information will be emailed to parents in the first week of Term 1. The Homework Club runs four days a week (Monday– Thursday). What your daughter will get out of the homework group • A quiet, fully supervised area conducive to study • Assistance with organisational skills and work prioritisation • Support through generalised homework advice • Guidance with student research • Access to resources • Help with establishing an open dialogue with their teachers in cases of subject specific difficulties* • Camaraderie between students who have a desire to improve their personal academic performance *The student-teacher relationship is seen as paramount. In assisting open communication between your daughter and her teachers, we aim to empower your daughter to take responsibility for her own learning and enable teachers to better respond to individual student needs Nil. This is a learning opportunity provided by the College. We do however set a maximum number of 27 Fees students in each session and we restrict each student to a maximum of two sessions per week.
