The Plan in Maturity 279 RCAF. A fabric-covered biplane, with two open cockpits in tandem, it was powered by a radial air-cooled engine and had a maximum speed of I I 3 mph. He found it 'a nice, kind, little aeroplane,' though the primitive Gosport equipment used to give dual instruction in the air was 'an absolutely terrible system. It was practically a tube, a flexible tube' through which the instructor talked 'into your ears . like listening at the end of a hose. ' MacKenzie went solo after ten hours. His first solo landing was complicated. As he approached, other aircraft were taking off in front of him, forcing him to go around three times. 'I'll never get this thing on the ground, ' he thought. His feelings changed once he was down. 'It was fantastic. Full of elation.' Although they were given specific manoeuvres to fly while in the air, '99% of us went up and did aerobatics . .. instead of practising the set sequences. ' Low flying was especially exciting, 'down, kicking the tree tops, flying around just like a high speed car. ' The only disconcerting part of the course was watching a fellow pupil 'wash out. ' 'You would come back in the barracks and see some kid packing his bags, ' he remembered. 'There were no farewell parties. You packed your bags and . snuck off . It was a slight and very sad affair. ' Elementary training was followed by service instruction as either a single- or dual-engine pilot. There was no 'special fighter pilot clique' among the pupils, but MacKenzie had always wanted to fly fighters and asked for single-engine training. -

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the development of RAF high command of the Metropolitan Air Force (MAF) during the Second World War. It sheds new light on the re-organisations of the Air Ministry in 1934, the RAF Command structure in 1936, and the tri-service debate in 1937 concerning the RAF proposal to establish a Supreme Air Commander (SAC). It reveals that while frontline expansion created an impetus for re-organisation, it was operational readiness that was the dominant factor in the re-structuring of the RAF. It examines the transition in RAF frontline organization from the mono-functional command system of 1936 to the multi- functional organisation that emerged after 1943 by looking at command structure and practice, personalities, and operational thinking. -

Journal of Aeronautical History Draft 2 Paper No. 2016/03 The Aerodynamics of the Spitfire J. A. D. Ackroyd Abstract This paper is a sequel to earlier publications in this Journal which suggested a possible origin for the Spitfire’s wing planform. Here, new material provided by Collar’s drag comparison between the Spitfire and the Hurricane is described and rather more details are given on the Spitfire’s high subsonic Mach number performance. The paper also attempts to bring together other existing material so as to provide a more extensive picture of the Spitfire’s aerodynamics. 1. Introduction To celebrate the Spitfire’s eightieth year, the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group organised the Spitfire Seminar held at Hamilton Place, London, on 19th September 2016. This celebration offered the author the opportunity to talk about the aerodynamics of the (1, 2) Spitfire. Part of that lecture was based on material already published in this Journal which suggested that the semi-elliptical wing planform adopted could have come from earlier publications by Prandtl. Section 2 offers further thoughts on this planform choice, in particular how this interlinked with the structural decision to place the single wing spar at the quarter-chord point and the selection of the aerofoil section. Since the publication of References 1 and 2, new material has come to light in the form of an investigation by A. R. Collar in 1940 which compares the drags experienced by the Spitfire and the Hurricane. This investigation, described in Section 3, indicates that a significant part of the Spitfire’s lower drag can be attributed to the better boundary-layer behaviour produced by its wing’s thinner aerofoil section. -

Second World War aircraft These notes are intended for adults who are supporting school groups around the Museum. Avro Lancaster This aircraft flew on 137 sorties; more missions than any other allied bomber, except one which no longer exists. Most Lancasters didn’t survive more than 22-25 missions. Lancasters were used for the Dambusters mission. Boeing B17 “Flying Fortress” American daylight bomber. The B17 was nicknamed the "Flying Fortress" because it was heavily armed and could survive, and inflict, heavy damage. This aircraft was the primary bomber of the U.S. Eighth Air Force in the last years of World War Two. Formations of over 850 US bombers flew over Europe in the daytime, while RAF Bomber Command carried on the night offensive. Bristol Beaufighter Known as “Whispering Death”. Reputed to be difficult to fly when it came into service. In his book Enemy Coast Ahead, Guy Gibson tells the story of a squadron ordered to convert to Beaufighters which they refused to do. Instead of adopting a heavy handed approach, the authorities sent a Beaufighter to perform spectacular aerobatics which the pilots watched. Crowding round the aircraft afterwards, they discovered the pilot was a girl from the ATA. After this, of course, they had no problems in flying the Beaufighter! Bristol Beaufort The Beaufort operated very successfully as a torpedo bomber, but also carried out the essential role of mine layer. In the spring of 1940 they began dropping magnetic mines in enemy coastal waters and continued to do so until mid-1943. Bristol Blenheim The Blenheim was a light bomber which was used in daylight bombing raids in 1940. -
