If Bulgaria has a national dish, it is certainly shopska salad, the queen of all Bulgarian food. This Bulgarian dish is simple and best eaten in the height of summer, when tomatoes are at their very best. It is somewhat similar to a Greek salad but the ingredients and preparation are slightly different. A true shopska salad is made of roughly chopped fresh summer tomatoes and cucumbers, plus sweet green peppers and red or green onions with a truckload of finely grated sirene cheese a local Bulgarian feta and some parsley on top. This coats each bite of salad with delicious, salty cheese — just how it should be. Fun fact: the salad is the same colors of the Bulgarian flag! Funner fact: It is often served with a shot of rakia at the beginning of a meal, which is how I think all future salads should be consumed, tbh. Banitsa is a traditional breakfast pastry or anytime snack. It is similar to borek which is found in other Balkan countries but the filling is a little different and so is the shape of Traditional Bulgarian Cooking pastry. Made of a phyllo dough brushed with butter, inside it houses a blend of Bulgarian dairy deliciousness. Local Traditional Bulgarian Cooking, sirene cheese, and eggs are all mixed together and baked in their phyllo house, rolled into a snail-like coil which is then served in slices. -

Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions. -

Yugoslavism and the Bulgarians in the Nineteenth Century The idea for the formation of a South Slav or Yugoslav Union, of a Balkan or an in Danubian Federation or Confederation, occupied important place the thinking and ' activity of a number of Bulgarian intellectuals and statesmen. Moreover, this idea was one of the aims toward which the organized Bulgarian national liberation movement strove. This essay endeavors to trace and to analyze the history of the Yugoslav Idea among the Bulgarians during the nineteenth century. The most important facts in the history of the interrelationships between the South Slavic peoples in the modern period relate to their efforts to preserve and develop their national consciousness and culture from assimilation, to free themselves from foreign domination, and to form independent states. It was in the process of the struggle for liberation that an awareness of the necessity for unity of the South Slavs arose and common practical steps were taken toward this end. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, foreign domination ahd time itself had, in great measure, obliterated the old ethnic enmities and rivalries which existed among the South Slavs during medieval times. The common fate and ordeal of these peoples for more than four hundred years contributed to the appearance of feelings of mutual sym- pathy and help among them. Until the end of the eighteenth century, the Bulgarian and Serbian peoples believed that liberation from the Ottomans could be achieved only with foreign help. At the same time we find the beginning of a number of attempts among them to unite in a common struggle for liberation.1 In the Serbian struggle for national liberation, not only Bulgarians living in Serbian lands but also a great number of volunteers from Bulgaria actively particpated in the struggle against the common enemy. -

Харпър и Димитър Камбуров] Theo D’haen / Тео Д`хаен University of Leuven / KU Leuven Bulgarian Literature as World Literature is a welcome addition to the Bloomsbury series Literatures as World Literature under the general editorship of Thomas Beebee. The volume provides the general reader with a generous profile of a literature that remains little-known abroad. In fact, one of the avowed aims of the volume is to make Bulgarian literature more visible to the outside world. In a Foreword, Maria Torodova, professor of history at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, sketches a brief historical perspective of how Bulgaria has considered itself and how it has been considered by others, and how the materials in the volume to follow relate to these views. Her impression is that they illustrate what she sees as an attitude shared among scholars writing on matters Bulgarian, especially when it comes to the country’s history and culture, viz. that they “tread the fine line between defensiveness and push-back”. Todorova’s foreword is followed by an Introduction proper by the volume’s editors. Michaela Harper locates the origins of the volume in her sharing the idea of it with Georgi Gospodinov and Albena Hranova, and following up on it a few years later, spurred by her contribution to Crime Fiction as World Literature, another volume in the 112 Colloquia Comparativa Litterarum, 2021 series Literatures as World Literature. -

NEW HAVEN, CONN. Foreword This outline of modern Bulgarian literature is the result of an exchange of memories of Bulgaria between the authors some years ago in New York. We both have visited Bulgaria many times, we have had many personal friends among its scholars and statesmen, and we feel a deep sympathy for the tragic plight of this long-suffering Slavic nation with its industrious and hard-working people. We both feel also that it is an injustice to Bulgaria and a loss to American Slavic scholarship that, in spite of the importance of Bulgaria for the Slavic world, so little attention is paid to the country's cultural contributions. This is the more deplorable for American influence in Bulgaria was great, even before World War I. Many Bulgarians were educated in Robert Col- lege in Constantinople and after World War I in the American College in Sofia, one of the institutions supported by the Near East Foundation. Many Bulgarian professors have visited the United States in happier times. So it seems unfair that Ameri- cans and American universities have ignored so completely the development of the Bulgarian genius and culture during the past century. -

Lovdjieva Museum \Petko and Pencho Slaveikovi", Sofia email: [email protected] Dedicated to the memory of Nestor Markov on the occasion of his 180th birthday anniversary Abstract When browsing through the biographies of the generation of Bulgarian teachers who lived and worked in the years around the liberation-bringing Russo-Turkish war (1877{1878), we see the clear outlines of the impediments blocking the education and development endeavors of the young Bulgarian state. Five centuries after it had been engulfed by the Ottoman empire and severed from European cul- ture, Bulgaria was far behind the times. In this article we review the activities of eleven Bulgarian teachers who lived and worked around the time of liberation from the Ottoman rule. Their lives and activi- ties on the borderline of two epochs strike us with their self-sacrificial efforts to overcome the enormous backwardness of the Bulgarian na- tion. We point out their contribution in the spheres of education and science. The biographies of these Bulgarian teachers present a vivid picture of the times and are an edifying subject to study and remem- ber. Knock, and the Door Will Open: How the Council of Europe helped improve governance in the Ukrainian Bessarabia This is a story about small multi-ethnic communities at the extremity of Ukraine, who were strongly opposed to reforms, fearing that the reforms could threaten ethnic identity and traditions. What made them change their minds? Bolhrad district is one of the nine south-west districts of the Odesa region in southern Ukraine. Bessarabia or Budzhak are the traditional names of this border area. Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Gagauz, Albanians, Moldovans, Lipovans and almost 20 other nationalities have been living here for centuries. Three years ago, when the Ukrainian government launched large decentralisation and territorial consolidation reforms, most of the local officials of the Bolhrad district were very reluctant to introduce any changes. In spring 2017, a delegation of about 20 local authorities, councillors, medical professionals and teachers came to Kyiv to visit the Ministry for Communities and Territories and proposed…not to reform the local government in their area. They provided several reasons for their request: "We were cautious about "decentralisation" as such. Some of the local politicians perceived the idea of municipal amalgamation in a negative way. They said this would lead to the closures of schools, health care facilities and cultural institutions. Villages would be deprived of centralised funding. It was often repeated that it would be impossible to amalgamate villages with residents of various national backgrounds. Although, here, in Karakut Village, Albanians, Bulgarians, Gagauz, Ukrainians, Moldovans, Russians and many others have been living as peaceful neighbours already for over 200 years. -

The willingness, research is the result of a combined methodology – a identity, diaspora, survey among university students of Bulgarian origin Bessarabic in the city of Odessa and school graduates from Bulgarians, high-schools with a Bulgarian Language education Ukraine (city of Bolgrad and the village of Chiyshia), as well as individual interviews. The main results show a balanced ratio of those willing to temporarily migrate to the “Historic Motherland” (Bulgaria) for education and work purposes, and those who do not declare any willingness for migration as such. The formation process of a certain malleable identities among the young representatives of the Bulgarian community in the Southwestern Ukraine is clearly evident from the represented results.
