It seeks to answer the following questions: First, how should we define the status of NKMCs (e.g. illegal economic migrant, refugee, or trafficking victim)? Second, are the NKMCs victimized? If any, what are the contexts and factors that contribute to such victimization, and how? Further, what are the characteristics of the victims, smugglers, and traffickers? Finally, what are the contributing factors and possible policy implications to prevent the victimization of NKMCs? For this, one-on-one, face-to-face in-depth interviews with 58 NKMCs (47 women and 11 men) currently living in South Korea were conducted. Study participants were recruited through the purposive snowball sampling method. Interviews were conducted using a standardized questionnaire. This study suggests that 37 NKMCs (64%) should be classified as trafficking victims of forced marriage, commercial sex, or labor exploitation. There were 34 cases of forced marriage, 10 cases of sex trafficking, and 3 cases of labor exploitation among the 58 NKMCs. The most common pattern (22 cases, 59%) of trafficking victimization was being deceived by traffickers in North Korea, crossing the border with traffickers, and being victimized by forced marriage. This study suggests that high demand for marriageable women in China, vulnerabilities of victims due to fear of deportation, and lack of guardianship owing to the Chinese government’s indifference contributed to the trafficking victimization of NKMCs. In sum, this study provides a general picture of the smuggling and trafficking of NKMCs. It also suggests the adoption of a criminal justice approach rather than a human rights perspective to the understanding of NKMCs’ victimization. Routine activity theory was adopted to analyze the ii contributing factors to the victimization of NKMCs. Finally, this study suggests the Chinese government should do more to protect NKMC trafficking victims. iii PREFACE Before 2013, I knew nothing about North Korean’s human trafficking victimization in China. So, when I first met a North Korean who talked about how she had been victimized, I was greatly surprised and began to look for more reports on the issue. Surprisingly, it was hard for me to find good empirical research reports from the criminal justice perspective. The conflicts are especially severe this year as the yields of harvest decrease because of the cold weather in the spring and the flood in the summer. In the case of North Hamgyong province it was reported that the level of discontent among farmers was serious enough to make the authorities worry. As the damage from flooding was so severe in the granary regions of North and South Hwanghae Provinces and North Pyongan Province it was decided that North Hamgyong Province was to provide rice for military provision first since it had better harvest.

Edna was born January 10, 1919 in Andover, NJ, to the late Joseph and Eva (Trauger) Riddle. Edna was preceded in death by her husband of 50+ years Robert LaBar and one son Robert LaBar Jr. Edna was of the Presbyterian Faith and in her spare time she enjoyed reading and gardening. She is survived by 3 daughters: Roberta LaBar Sanders of Perry; Beverley Willard of Michigan; and Sharon Harty of Perry; 1 sister: Ilamay Vendola of New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren. It has been produced to provide supporting information for the application by financial investigators from any force or agency for Account Freezing Orders and other orders and warrants under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. It can also be used for any other related purpose. This document is not protectively marked. Executive Summary • The transfer of funds for personal purposes out of China by Chinese citizens is tightly regulated by the Chinese government, and in all but exceptional circumstances is limited to the equivalent of USD 50,000 per year. All such transactions, without exception, are required to be carried out through a foreign exchange account opened with a Chinese bank for the purpose. The regulations nevertheless provide an accessible, legitimate and auditable mechanism for Chinese citizens to transfer funds overseas. • Chinese citizens who, for their own reasons, choose not to use the legitimate route stipulated by the Chinese government for such transactions, frequently use a form of Informal Value Transfer System (IVTS) known as ‘Underground Banking’ to carry them out instead. Evidence suggests that this practice is widespread amongst the Chinese diaspora in the UK. • Evidence from successful money laundering prosecutions in the UK has shown that Chinese Underground Banking is abused for the purposes of laundering money derived from criminal offences, by utilising cash generated from crime in the UK to settle separate and unconnected inward Underground Banking remittances to Chinese citizens in the UK.

Situation analysis Description of the disaster From August 29th to August 31st heavy rainfall occurred in North Hamgyong Province, DPRK – in some areas more than 300 mm of rain were reported in just two days, causing the flooding of the Tumen River and its tributaries around the Chinese-DPRK border and other areas in the province. Within a particularly intense time period of four hours in the night between 30 and 31 August 2016, the waters of the river Tumen rose between six and 12 metres, causing an immediate threat to the lives of people in nearby villages.

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.
