Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

Keter Shem Tov: A Study in the Entitling of Books, Here Limited to One Title Only Keter Shem Tov: A Study in the Entitling of Books, Here Limited to One Title Only[1] by Marvin J. Heller Entitling, naming books is, a fascinating subject. Why did the author call his book what he/she did? Why that name and not another? Hebrew books frequently have names resounding in meaning, but providing little insight into the contents of the book. This article explores the subject, focusing on one title only, Keter Shem Tov. That book-name is taken from a verse “the crown of a good name (Keter Shem Tov) excels them all (Avot 4:13). The article describes the varied books with that title, unrelated by author or subject, and why the author/publisher selected that title for the book. 1. Simeon said: there are three crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of royalty; but the crown of a good name (emphasis added, Keter Shem Tov) excels them all (Avot 4:13). “As a pearl atop a crown (keter), so are his good deeds fitting” (Israel Lipschutz, Zera Yisrael, Avot 4:13). Entitling, naming books, remains, is, a fascinating subject. Why did the author call his book what he/she did? Why that name and not another? Hebrew books since the Middle-Ages often have names resounding in meaning, but providing little insight into the contents of the book. A reader looking at the title of a book in another language, more often than not, is immediately aware of the book’s subject matter. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis explores the transmission of information about classical inscriptions and their use in historical scholarship between 1530 and 1603. It aims to demonstrate that antiquarians' approach to one form of material non-narrative evidence for the ancient world reveals a developed sense of history, and that this approach can be seen as part of a more general interest in expanding the subject matter of history and the range of sources with which it was examined. It examines the milieu of the men who studied inscriptions, arguing that the training and intellectual networks of these men, as well as the need to secure patronage and the constraints of printing, were determining factors in the scholarship they undertook. It then considers the first collections of inscriptions that aimed at a comprehensive survey, and the systems of classification within these collections, to show that these allowed scholars to produce lists and series of features in the ancient world; the conventions used to record inscriptions and what scholars meant by an accurate transcription; and how these conclusions can influence our attitude to men who reconstructed or forged classical material in this period. -

Anno II ISSN 2421-4191 2016 DOI : 10.6092/2421-4191/2016.2.153-174 FRANCESCO ROBORTELLO IN LIBRUM ARISTOTELIS DE ARTE POETICA EXPLICATIONES Francesco Robortello (Udine 1516 - Padova 1567), allievo di Gregorio Amaseo a Padova e di Romolo Amaseo a Bologna, iniziò l’attività accademica nel 1538, a Lucca, come docente di eloquenza. Chiamato a decla- mare l’orazione inaugurale per la ripresa delle attività dello Studio pisano (1° novembre 1543), divenne nella stessa sede lettore di humanae litterae , tenendo corsi, tra l’altro, sulle opere retoriche e morali di Cicerone. Nel 1548 – anno della pubblicazione di alcune delle sue opere più significative – Robortello si trasferì a Venezia, succedendo a Giambattista Egnazio nell’insegnamento di lettere greche e latine. Proprio durante il soggiorno veneziano intensi- ficò la sua attività filologica, di cui l’edizione delle sette tragedie di Eschi- lo è uno dei risultati di maggiore rilievo. Nel 1552 a Padova ricoprì la cattedra di eloquenza greca e latina, prendendo il posto di Lazzaro Buo- namici. Risale al 1553 la nota polemica con Carlo Sigonio. It signifies a lawyer or one wise in the law. If we are to recollect and celebrate his life in its juridical context and significance then Jacques Derrida, J.D., is not a bad place to start. Technically, of course, and despite the legal sounding acronym, J.D. was not a lawyer. He did, however, hold a visiting appointment at a Law School in New York. My law school in fact. Let me add, at the risk of getting personal for a moment—and if not now, when? —that in many ways I am here because he was. And then also, some of his most influential articles played with the subject of law or were delivered and published first in a legal forum: his essay on The Law of Genre,1 or his analysis of Kafka’s parable Before the Law,2 for example, and then again his lengthy and widely circulated exposition of The Force of Law.3 He kept coming back to law: he inhabited its margins, searched for its supplements, dwelt on its traces. -

Zatem celem niniejszego artykułu jest wypełnienie przynajmniej części tej luki poprzez prezentację popularności dzieła w szesnastowiecznej Polsce, gdzie pierwszego przekładu dokonał Mikołaj Rej. Faktem jest, że wielu innych wybitnych przedstawicieli kultury polskiego renesansu interesowało się Zodiacusem, na co znajdujemy liczne odwołania do tego dzieła, zarówno w utworach poetyckich, jak i traktatach fi lozofi cznych. Francesco Robortello (1516–1567)
Francesco Robortello (1516–1567) This book explores the intellectual world of Francesco Robortello, one of the most prominent scholars of the Italian Renaissance. From poetics to rhetoric, philology to history, topics to ethics, Robortello revolutionised the field of humanities through innovative interpretations of ancient texts and with a genius that was architectural in scope. He was highly esteemed by his contemporaries for his acute wit, but also envied and disparaged for his many qualities. In comparison with other humanists of his time such as Carlo Sigonio and Pier Vettori, Robortello had a deeply philosophical vein, one that made him unique not only to Italy, but to Europe more generally. Robortello’s role in reforming the humanities makes him a constituent part of the long-fifteenth century. Robortello’s thought, however, unlike that of other fifteenth-century humanists, sprung from and was thoroughly imbued with a systematic, Aristotelian spirit without which his philosophy would never have emerged from the tumultuous years of the mid-Cinquecento. Francesco Robortello created a system for the humanities which was unique for his century: a perfect union of humanism and philosophy. The impact of this text on the poetological framework of the neoclassical mundane drama still has to be discussed as it is crucial to understand the framework of drama theory in order to interpret appropriately the evolution of the Italian neo-classical theater that came into being half a millennium ago and soon became a major cultural achievement of modern Europe. HISTORIC LIBRARIES FORUM BRIEF GUIDES TO NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGES, 2 HEBREW Introduction This publication is intended as a brief guide for those without knowledge of Hebrew who find themselves dealing with books in that language in a library context. Dealing with a book in Hebrew can be daunting for those unfamiliar with the language. Not only is the alphabet different, but it is also usually printed without vowels, meaning that knowledge of the alphabet is not in itself enough to decipher a title page or transcribe it in Roman letters. This guide aims to provide enough information to recognise the most common titles and types of Hebrew work and to identify records to download or copy from other library catalogues. Reading Hebrew Hebrew is written from right to left, so Hebrew books open from the right hand side, hence the title page can be found at what would be the back of an English book. The alphabet The Hebrew alphabet is made up of 22 consonants. 5 of these have a ‘final’ form, which is used when the letter appears at the end of a word. There are no capital letters. DIGITAL SIGNATURES OF THE BAROQUE 10.1515/cris-2016-0002 DIGITAL SIGNATURES OF THE BAROQUE THE CULT OF THE CHRONOGRAM IN 18TH CENTURY BOHEMIA ALEX WENT The embedding of coded dates (chronograms) in religious and secular memorial inscriptions became something of an ob- session in the early 1700s, especially in the Czech lands. This essay proposes a number of possible reasons for the fashion and further suggests that the appeal of the chronogram had less to do with intellectual vanity – though this played a part – and more with the acknowledged power of inscription itself, particularly when it came in the form of a public prayer. By examining several notable examples, the author seeks to demonstrate that chronograms were more than simply word-games; they provided an essential link between the reader, the context of contemporary intellectual thought, and the classical heritage from which it was descended. CRIS Bulletin 2016/01 17 DIGITAL SIGNATURES OF THE BAROQUE THE RULES OF COMPOSITION Five years after moving to the Royal Court of Dresden, the Bohemian-born composer J.D. Zelenka pro- duced a choral mass for his employer, Augustus II, Elector of Saxony. It was the musician's second published work (ZWV 21) and it survives today only in an incomplete form. On one page of the manuscript the com- poser has appended his full name in its Latin form: Ioannes LVCas IgnatIVs DIsMas zeLenka The inscription is interesting for two reasons: firstly, Zelenka, a Catholic composer in a newly Catholic court islanded in protestant Saxony, shows his devotion by adding to his birthnames (Lukáš Ignác) the name of Dismas, the 'good thief' of the crucifixion story.
