Course Overview
The objec ve of this one‐day course is to present the key fundamentals for the design and construc on planning of tall and supertall buildings. Some case studies from JinMao to Burj Khalifa and beyond will be discussed. In par cular the following topics will be discussed:
The latest development and technological advances in construc on materials and damping, etc. Brief history on tall building systems and future trends with due considera on to new technologies that could result in new typologies in tall buildings. Key considera ons in construc on planning, especially for tall and complex buildings Key fundamentals in the structural design planning for tall buildings, including gravity load management, wind engineering management, seismic engineering management, robustness/redundancy considera ons, column shortening, founda on design, vibra on control strategies for human percep on to mo on, sustainability con- sidera ons, damping systems, etc. Case studies of tall buildings from around the globe.

Mr. Abdelrazaq is Execu ve Vice President and Head of High-rise & Complex Building Division at Samsung C & T Corpora ons. Since joining Samsung in 2004, he has been involved in the construc on planning and structural design of several local and interna onal projects, including the Burj Khalifa, Samsung Town & HQ office, Seoul, South Korea and 151 Incheon Tower, Incheon, South Korea.
Mr. Abdelrazaq has extensive experience in the design of buildings ranging from complex low-rise to ultra high-rise build- ings, and long span structures. Some of the award-winning projects during his tenure at SOM included the Burj Khalifa, JinMao tower, Tower Palace III, LG Kangnam Tower and Millennium Park, Chicago and Hotel De Arts in Barcelona, Spain. Presently, Mr. Abdelrazaq serves also as a lecturer at Seoul Na onal University teaching graduate level high-rise buildings Course Fees structural design & spa al structures. He is also adjunct professor at Illinois Ins tute of Technology’s School of Architec- ture, where his research interest includes the development of innova ve structural systems in concrete/steel/composite AED 1,000/- structures, and in shaping supertall buildings to control their dynamic response to wind excita on.
