3 Martynas Kraujalis Synthwave music style: strangeness and hyperreality Summary Synthwave music: a self-expression and the postmodernist musical movement. Hyperreality – a better creation of the world bringing more happiness than real. A retro- futuristic future that never happened, but today it is thought of as a better hyperreal world, a better life to which you want to return even though it never existed. Synthesizers and bitcrush: The main elements of Synthwave music that mimic the stylistics of the time: bitcrush was a flaw in the 1980s, now it’s a big part of the Synthwave style. The electronic sound of the synthesizer becomes a medium imitation of hyperreality. The blue colour of Synthwave: man's desire to contact the divine being - hyperreality. Synthwave music and how strangely the listener reacts to it: the reaction to strangeness creates another sense of Synthwave listening, the aesthetic perception of Synthwave. This work discusses the aesthetic aspects of Synthwave, analyzes what Synthwave is, its development, graphics, style, practical application.

  • A Retrospective Analysis and the Future for Game Music. Bbw Hochschule
Interactive Music writing in the Age of AI: A retrospective analysis and the future for game music. bbw Hochschule – Management of Creative Industries MA Ugur, Huseyin Can Matriculation Number: 037201 Course Code: HM029 Primary supervisor – Peter Mathias Konhäusner Secondary supervisor – Prof. Dr. Ingo Schünemann Submitted on: 26/09/2020 Abstract In this thesis, the practices, workers and monetary aspects of interactive music industry has been investigated. As the terminology regarding this industry is observed to be ambiguous, each of the elements that make up the industry and where they came from were explored. Once the definitions and their relevance to industry have been established, the effects of progressive technology on this industry have been hypothesized. As technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented reality are still limited to niche area of console gaming and just recently making their appearance on mainstream, they have been only mentioned. However, with the all-encompassing nature of Artificial Intelligence technologies and what they offer to software industry int this thesis it is hypothesized to impact the industry on its population of workers and their financial and professional practices. As the industry has been observed to be in a stable state financially and dependent on the gaming industry itself, it is proposed that the biggest impact will be in their use of technology and how they can bring new dimensions to future games have been discussed. Furthermore, as these effects have been described anecdotally, to observe the psychosomatic experience a more developed game music can offer, an experiment game based on earlier studies in the field have been conducted.

  • Genre in Practice: Categories, Metadata and Music-Making in Psytrance Culture
Genre in Practice: Categories, Metadata and Music-Making in Psytrance Culture Feature Article Christopher Charles University of Bristol (UK) Abstract Digital technology has changed the way in which genre terms are used in today’s musical cultures. Web 2.0 services have given musicians greater control over how their music is categorised than in previous eras, and the tagging systems they contain have created a non-hierarchical environment in which musical genres, descriptive terms, and a wide range of other metadata can be deployed in combination, allowing musicians to describe their musical output with greater subtlety than before. This article looks at these changes in the context of psyculture, an international EDM culture characterised by a wide vocabulary of stylistic terms, highlighting the significance of these changes for modern-day music careers. Profiles are given of two artists, and their use of genre on social media platforms is outlined. The article focuses on two genres which have thus far been peripheral to the literature on psyculture, forest psytrance and psydub. It also touches on related genres and some novel concepts employed by participants (”morning forest” and ”tundra”). Keywords: psyculture; genre; internet; forest psytrance; psydub Christopher Charles is a musician and researcher from Bristol, UK. His recent PhD thesis (2019) looked at the careers of psychedelic musicians in Bristol with chapters on event promotion, digital music distribution, and online learning. He produces and performs psydub music under the name Geoglyph, and forest psytrance under the name Espertine. Email: <[email protected]>. I played at few places that I always wanted to visit, like Las Vegas, which I love. I think I came back to Poland for even some more shows after that tour. Yeah, you did. Your biggest live performance was at the Pol’and’Rock festival in 2019… Absolutely. Yeah, that was a huge crowd. It was like five hundred thousand people or something like that. At least that’s what they say. I think many fans know and remember that period very well. But time flies fast, and here we are in 2021, five years after the release of “The Uncanny Valley” and four years after the “New Model” EP.
