Bonobo's 'Kerala'
13:2 Autumn 19 MSMI https://doi.org/10.3828/msmi.2019.9 Living with Time-Space Compression: Bonobo’s ‘Kerala’ and ‘No Reason’ STE V EN SH AV IRO Living with Time-Space Compression Bonobo’s 2017 album Migration is about shifting identities and passages from place to place: the migratory movement of bodies through space and time. The music blends multiple styles and sonic motifs from around the world in order to produce a cosmopolitan vision of multiple cultures, mutually influencing one another and coexisting in harmony. But the music videos for several of the tracks on this album – particularly Dave Bullivant’s video for ‘Kerala’ and Oscar Hudson’s video for ‘No Reason’ – tease out and complicate our sense of what is at stake in the processes of globe-spanning migration. Under the regime of globalised capitalism, not all substances transport themselves in time and through space with the same degree of ease. Financial capital passes quickly and seamlessly over the entire globe, while human bodies are all too often boxed in, shut out or even exterminated. Bullivant and Hudson both use strikingly innovative formal means in order to explore the blockages in time and space that underlie and qualify Bonobo’s utopian vision. The British electronic producer known as Bonobo (Simon Green) released his album Migration in 2017. The album’s music is grounded in midtempo dance rhythms, but its sonic palette is diversified with touches of (so-called) ‘world music’. With such a soundscape, Bonobo might well be accused of musical tourism or colonialism. But I am willing to accept at face value Bonobo’s claim that the album is not primarily engaged in appropriating cool sounds from the developing world. -
The Psytrance Party
THE PSYTRANCE PARTY C. DE LEDESMA M.Phil. 2011 THE PSYTRANCE PARTY CHARLES DE LEDESMA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of East London for the degree of Master of Philosophy August 2011 Abstract In my study, I explore a specific kind of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) event - the psytrance party to highlight the importance of social connectivity and the generation of a modern form of communitas (Turner, 1969, 1982). Since the early 90s psytrance, and a related earlier style, Goa trance, have been understood as hedonist music cultures where participants seek to get into a trance-like state through all night dancing and psychedelic drugs consumption. Authors (Cole and Hannan, 1997; D’Andrea, 2007; Partridge, 2004; St John 2010a and 2010b; Saldanha, 2007) conflate this electronic dance music with spirituality and indigene rituals. In addition, they locate psytrance in a neo-psychedelic countercultural continuum with roots stretching back to the 1960s. Others locate the trance party events, driven by fast, hypnotic, beat-driven, largely instrumental music, as post sub cultural and neo-tribal, representing symbolic resistance to capitalism and neo liberalism. My study is in partial agreement with these readings when applied to genre history, but questions their validity for contemporary practice. The data I collected at and around the 2008 Offworld festival demonstrates that participants found the psytrance experience enjoyable and enriching, despite an apparent lack of overt euphoria, spectacular transgression, or sustained hedonism. I suggest that my work adds to an existing body of literature on psytrance in its exploration of a dance music event as a liminal space, redolent with communitas, but one too which foregrounds mundane features, such as socialising and pleasure. -

The sound is minimalistic without excesses, but at the same time the melodies are very beautiful, the bit powerful and clear, pronounced. Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas
5 Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Rem Koolhaas Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical projects, traces the discursive practice analyse behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office + OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes—such as wall, void, tur montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape—that have tek structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas’s Essays on the History of Ideas oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles archi manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re- Ingrid Böck applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas’s individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work’s relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which OMA has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject—Rem Koolhaas—and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas. Ingrid Böck is a researcher at the Institute of Architectural Theory, Art History and Cultural Studies at the Graz Ingrid Böck University of Technology, Austria. “Despite the prominence and notoriety of Rem Koolhaas … there is not a single piece of scholarly writing coming close to the … length, to the intensity, or to the methodological rigor found in the manuscript -

To View Our Program Guide
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Greetings everyone, and welcome to Kaslo Bay Park! We are gathering in one of the most beautiful places on Earth and I want to thank the Ktunaxa Nation, as well as residents of Kaslo, for allowing us to use this land and for supporting this important yearly celebration in such a magnificent part of the planet. Also a very special thank you to each of you for joining us in making the Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival a unique experience that thrives when passionate people combine community with the arts. A lot of people have worked incredibly hard on this year’s celebration, and we can’t wait to share this weekend with you! When we were determining the performers for this year’s festival, it felt like we were taking a big step into new territory. Every year we take a chance with our programming and hope that people will see the value in experiencing these performers in such a unique setting. We put an emphasis on selecting musicians that would take everyone on a musical journey through all three days of the festival and I feel this year’s line-up will do just that. This festival is intended to be a full weekend experience, and as I write this today - we have sold more weekend passes than ever before. Thank you everyone for being part of this journey with us! I am hoping that this weekend will leave you feeling energized and inspired. In the words of past performer Mickey Hart “The feeling we have here — remember it, take it home and do some good with it” Watching people absorb the power of music is the greatest reward of this job for me. -
"Licensing Music Works and Transaction Costs in Europe”
"Licensing music works and transaction costs in Europe” Final study September 2012 1 Acknowledgements: KEA would like to thank Google, the internet services company, for financing which made this study possible. The study was carried out independently and reflects the views of KEA alone. 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Establishing and running online music services is a complex task, raising both technical and legal difficulties. This is particularly the case in Europe, where complex rights licensing structures hinder the development of the market and the launch of new innovative online services. Compared to the US, Europe is lagging behind in terms of digital music revenue. Furthermore, the development of the market is fairly disparate among different countries in the European Union. This study aims to identify and analyse transaction costs in music licensing. It examines the online music markets and outlines the licensing processes faced by online services. It offers a qualitative and quantitative analysis of transaction costs in the acquisition of the relevant rights by online music services. The study also suggests different ways of decreasing transaction costs. The research focuses on three countries (the UK, Spain and the Czech Republic) and builds on data collected through a survey with online music service providers available in the three countries as well as interviews with relevant stakeholders in the field of music licensing. THE EUROPEAN ONLINE MUSIC MARKET The music industry has steadily expanded over the past few years, away from selling CDs towards selling music online or through concerts and live music. (Masnick, Ho, 2012). Among the 500 licensed online music services in the world (according to IFPI), many emulate the physical record store, by offering ‘download to own’ tracks at a similar price point. -
