At age ten, having been healed of an illness, she began preaching in the streets of Viterbo against the emperor Fredrick II, enemy of the pope. Deemed dangerous, she was exiled from the city, returning only after the emperor’s death. Rose herself died at age eighteen, consumed by the tireless exercise of charity. Her cult began immediately after her death. Her relics were translated to the church of Santa Maria delle Rose on September 4, an event that is still celebrated with a procession. She is depicted in the robe of a tertiary, and her attributes are roses and lilies. Since 1922, Rose has been the protector of the young females members of Catho- lic Action. Rose is from the and indicates the flower. St. John of Ogilvie, Martyr March 10 John Ogilvie was born in Scotland in 1579. At fourteen he was sent to be educated in Belgium and Germany. There he converted to Catholicism and entered the novitiate of the Jesuits at Bruun, in Moravia. He was ordained a in 1610. In 1613, he returned to Scotland, where Catholics were being persecuted, so he operated clandestinely. In 1614, John was arrested and tortured; the next year he was executed for high treason at Glasgow. He was canonized in 1976. He is depicted wearing a cassock and black mantle. John is from a Hebrew name meaning “Yahweh is gracious.”

To place an ad call the Parish Office @ 392-2710 St. Leo the Great, Hilton, NY ST. JOSEPH’S TABLE WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? New Testament documentation on St. Joseph reveals a man who tended to linger in the background. So it’s rather fitting that the feast of St. Joseph is observed on March 19. That’s only two days after St. Patrick’s Day - which in the United States, serves as the most popular of celebrations. St. Joseph’s Day affairs aren’t nearly as numerous, and their celebrants don’t march in parades, wear green clothing or drink green beer. There are scant details about the life of Mary’s husband, Joseph the carpenter. Following Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Joseph led Mary and a young Jesus into Egypt to escape King Herod. Joseph quietly accepted all that was happening - including the fact that his wife had conceived a child without their having consummated their marriage. Joseph was able to allow himself to be an instrument of God and allow himself to trust - he was a silent, powerful figure who cared for the whole family. St. Joseph’s Tables originated several centuries ago following a severe famine which swept through Sicily. Peasant farmers prayed to St. Joseph for help, and the famine soon subsided. In gratitude, the farmers paid homage to St. Joseph by filling an altar with food. Typical St. Joseph’s Tables contain abundant supplies of bread, fruit, and other foods not containing meat. Those who assemble for the meal make petitions to St. Joseph for favors, or give thanksgiving for prayers answered. Money donations for charitable organizations are also frequently collected on the day of the table. There will be a basket for money donations on the dessert table and our alms are going to the Hilton-Parma Community Food Shelf this year. You are invited to participate in our St. Joseph’s Table in the Parish Center on Sunday, March 17, following the 9:30 AM Mass. There is a sign-up poster in the Parish Life Center. Please add your name(s) to the poster and indicate your choice of food donation. Any meatless item will do. If you can help with feast, please indicate.

MAGNIFICAT BREAKFAST The next Magnificat Breakfast will be Saturday, March 23 from 9:30 AM until Noon. Aimee O’Connell, a Third Order Carmelite, therapist & consultant and a advocate for Au- tism will be the featured speaker. From a very early age, Aimee was drawn to God and the saints. She was also a precocious child, talking at seven months, reading by two, and doing fifth grade work by kindergar- ten. She was also permitted to make her First Communion at the un- precedented age of four; such was her comprehension of the sacraments and her hunger to receive them. However, Aimee was not simply a gifted child. She had Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. Join Aimee as she describes how her unlikely discovery of the life story of St. Thorlak of helped her identify and formulate these spiritual skills that teach “why” relationships help people relate to God. The Mission of Saint Thorlak, which she founded is an online apostolate inspired by its namesake “to un- derstand, recognize, address and prevent spiritual starvation, letting people with autism lead us on our way.” The Magnificat Breakfast, a full buffet, will be held at the Diplomat Party House, 1 Diplomat Way (off Lyell Ave.) Gates. Pre-registration is required, no tickets are sold at the door. Registration is $20 if postmarked by March 16; $22 after. Students are $12. Don’t let cost keep you away - call Diane Hayes at 585-943-4759. Confessions will be available from 8:15 AM to 9:15 AM and again at Noon. There is a gift raffle for 1st time attendees, a gift basket raffle for all and a used book sale. Call Diane if you have any questions. Mail your check to Magnificat Rochester, PO Box 24787, Rochester, NY 14624 or use PayPal on the website: www.MagnificatRochester.org. “Glorify the Lord with me.
