All are welcome to attend this next in a $100 Dollar Raffle series of talks to be offered by various St. Joseph the Worker Parish will have a one hundred dollar raffle presenters on the second Sunday of each month through May. this year instead of the three smaller raffles that we usually have.     The Nordic Bishops' Conference Autumn Session Reykjavik 14 to 20 September 2012 A Year of Faith The Diocese of Reykjavik marked the imminent beginning of the Year of Faith in the presence of all the Nordic Bishops on Sunday 16 September 2012 in the Cathedral of Christ the King - the official date being 11 October. The President of the Bishops' Conference, Mgr. Anders Arborelius, in his homily encouraged the faithful to give witness to their faith, grow in faith and inspire faith in others. All over the world, the Catholic Church will give priority to a new evangelisation inspired by the Second Vatican Council, opened by Pope John XXIII fifty years ago. On 16 September the Bishops made a pilgrimage to Skálholt, one of the two medieval sees of the Church in Iceland in commemoration of Saint Thorlak the Patron Saint of Iceland The Bishops will take an active part in the evangelization and their contributions will be published throughout the region. Translations to e.g. English, Polish, Lithuanian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Arabic, and Tamil will be provided. An Audience with President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson The President of the Republic of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, received the Bishops in an audience on 18 September. The President spoke of his visit to the Holy Father Pope Benedict in Rome 2011, and showed much interest in the life of the Catholic Church in the various Nordic Countries. A Rectors' Conference There are Seminaries for the education of Catholic Priests in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. To obtain a stronger and closer co-operation between the superiors of these institutions, the Bishops have established a Rectors' Conference.

    religions Article Þingeyrar Abbey in Northern Iceland: A Benedictine Powerhouse of Cultural Heritage Gottskálk Jensson Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen, Njalsgade 136, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark; [email protected] Abstract: Þingeyrar Abbey was founded in 1133 and dissolved in the wake of the Lutheran Reforma- tion (1550), to virtually disappear with time from the face of the earth. Although highly promising archeological excavations are under way, our material points of access to this important monastic foundation are still only a handful of medieval artifacts. However, throughout its medieval existence Þingeyrar Abbey was an inordinately large producer of Latin and Icelandic literature. We have the names of monastic authors, poets, translators, compilators, and scribes, who engaged creatively with such diverse subjects as Christian hagiography, contemporary history, and Norse mythology, skillfully amalgamating all of this into a coherent, imaginative whole. Thus, Þingeyrar Abbey has a prominent place in the creation and preservation of the Icelandic Eddas and Sagas that have shaped the Northern European cultural memory. Despite the dissolution of monastic libraries and wholesale destruction of Icelandic-Latin manuscripts through a mixture of Protestant zealotry and parchment reuse, philologists have been able to trace a number of surviving codices and fragments back to Þingeyrar Abbey. Ultimately, however, our primary points of access to the fascinating world of this remote Benedictine community remain immaterial, a vast corpus of medieval texts edited on the basis of manuscript copies at unknown degrees of separation from the lost originals.
