Page 4 ❑ Friday, January 16, 2004 ❑ Santa Monica Daily Press OPINION LETTERS Lights in City Hall appear pretty dim Editor: Again, we see why politicians and lawyers are not always the brightest bulbs in the world. In regard to the Farmers’ Market crash, City Attorney Jeanette Schachtner says that the bollards would not have stopped Russell Weller’s car (SMDP, Jan. 15, page 4). That may be, but they sure could have: A) Slowed him down. He was, according to the report, “gaining speed,” which means that the bollards may have stopped him since he was at a lower speed. B) Caused him to swerve and crash before he mowed down more people. C) Cut the electrical system of the car, bringing it to a stop, or at least blown out the tires. D) Caused a jerking in the car or pedals that would have taken Weller’s foot off the gas pedal, causing the car to stop. Last, but not least, her argument that the bollards would be a problem for emer- gency vehicles is a lie for in the entire time that the Farmers’ Market has been there, no vehicle has gone down Arizona Avenue. They either parked at Second or Fourth streets, the alleys or the Third Street Promenade. Councilman Bob Hollbrook’s echo doesn’t hold water for the same reasons as stated above, yet, when they were installed on Third Street, it was stated that the bollards would keep people safe on Third Street.
