The Dambusters Revisited J.L. HINKS, Halcrow Group Ltd. C. HEITEFUSS, Ruhr River Association M. CHRIMES, Institution of Civil Engineers SYNOPSIS. The British raid on the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams on the night of 16/17 May, 1943 caused the breaching of the 40m high Möhne and 48m high Eder dams and serious damage to the 69m high Sorpe dam. This paper considers the planning for the raid, model testing, the raid itself, the effects of the breaches and the subsequent rehabilitation of the dams. Whilst the subject is of considerable historical interest it also has significant contemporary relevance. Events following the breaching of the dams have been used for the calibration of dambreak studies and emphasise the vulnerability of road and railway bridges which is not always acknowledged in contemporary studies. INTRODUCTION In researching this paper the authors have been very struck by the human interest in the story of English, German and Ukrainian people, whether civilian or in uniform, who participated in some aspect of the raid or who lost their lives or homes. As befits a paper for the British Dam Society, this paper, however, concentrates on the technical questions that arise, leaving the human story to others. This paper was prompted by the BDS sponsored visit, in April 2009, to the Derwent Reservoir by 43 members of the Association of Friends of the Hubert-Engels Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Applied Hydromechanics at Dresden University of Technology. There is a small museum at the dam run by Vic Hallam, an employee of Severn Trent Water. -

Biographical Note Possibly a group of three brothers—G. Leiber, V. Erich Leiber, and R. Leiber— participated in the German youth movement during the 1920s and 1930s. The probable maker of the photo album, Erich Leiber, was probably born before 1915 in north- western Germany, most likely in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. His early experiences with the youth movement appear to have been in conjunction with school outings and Christian Union for Young Men (CVJM) in Austria. He also travelled to Sweden in 1928, but most of his travels are concentrated in northwestern Germany. Later in 1931 he became an active member in a conservative organization, possibly the Deutsche Pfadfinderschaft St. Georg,1 participating in outings to nationalistic locations such as the Hermann Monument in the Teutoburg Forest and to the Naval Academy at Mürwik in Kiel. In 1933 Erich Leiber joined the SA and became a youth leader or liaison for a Hitler Youth unit while still maintaining a connection to a group called Team Yorck, a probable extension of prior youth movement associates. After 1935 Erich’s travels seem reduced to a small group of male friends, ending with an Easter trip along the Rhine River in 1938. -

Für die Benutzung ist unbedingt die Vorbemerkung zur Internetpräsentation auf S. 3 zu beachten! 1 EINLEITUNG: Eine Gesamtübersicht über das Schrifttum zu Waldeck und Pyrmont fehlt bisher. Über jährliche Übersichten der veröffentlichten Beiträge verfügen der Waldeckische Landeskalender und die hei- matkundliche Beilage zur WLZ, "Mein Waldeck". Zu den in den Geschichtsblättern für Waldeck u. Pyrmont veröffentlichten Beiträgen sind Übersichten von HERWIG (Gbll Waldeck 28, 1930, S. 118), BAUM (Gbll Waldeck 50, 1958, S. 154) und HOCHGREBE (Gbll Waldeck 76, 1988, S. 137) veröffentlicht worden. NEBELSIECK brachte ein Literaturver-zeichnis zur waldeckischen Kir- chengeschichte (Gbll Waldeck 38, 1938, S. 191). Bei Auswahl der Titel wurden die Grenzgebiete Westfalen, Hessen, Itter, Frankenberg und Fritzlar ebenso berücksichtigt wie die frühen geschichtlichen Beziehungen zu den Bistümern Köln, Mainz, Paderborn sowie der Landgrafschaft Hessen-Kassel. Es war mir wohl bewußt, daß es schwierig ist, hier die richtige Grenze zu finden. Es werden auch Titel von waldeckischen Autoren angezeigt, die keinen Bezug auf Waldeck haben. Die Vornamen der Autoren sind ausgeschrieben, soweit diese sicher feststellbar waren, was jedoch bei älteren Veröffentlichungen nicht immer möglich war. Berücksichtigung fanden Titel aus periodisch erscheinenden Organen, wichtige Artikel aus der Ta- gespresse und selbständige Veröffentlichungen in Buch- oder Broschürenform. Für die Bearbeitung der Lokalgeschichte sind hier zahlreiche Quellen aufgezeigt. Bei Überschneidung, bzw. wenn keine klare Scheidung möglich war, sind die Titel u. U. mehrfach, d. h. unter verschiedenen Sachgebieten aufgeführt. Anmerkungen in [ ] sind vom Bearbeiter einge- fügt worden. Verständlicherweise kann eine solche Zusammenstellung keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit er- heben, sie hätte aber auch außerhalb meiner Möglichkeiten gelegen, was besonders für das ältere Schrifttum zutrifft. -

THE SELF-PERCEPTION OF CHRONIC PHYSICAL INCAPACITY AMONG THE LABOURING POOR. PAUPER NARRATIVES AND TERRITORIAL HOSPITALS IN EARLY MODERN RURAL GERMANY. University College, London 2001 * 1W ) 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the experiences of the labouring poor who were suffering from chronic physical illnesses in the early modern period. Despite the popularity of institutional history among medical historians, the experiences of the sick poor themselves have hitherto been sorely neglected. Research into the motivation of the sick poor to petition for a place in a hospital to date has stemmed from a reliance upon administrative or statistical sources, such as patient lists. An over-reliance upon such documentation omits an awareness of the 'voice of the poor', and of their experiences of the realities of living with a chronic ailment. Research focusing upon the early modern period has been largely silent with regards to the specific ways in which a prospective patient viewed a hospital, and to the point in a sick person's life in which they would apply for admission into such an institution. This thesis hopes to rectif,r such a bias. Research for this thesis has centred on surviving pauper petitions, written by and on behalf of the rural labouring poor who sought admission into two territorial hospitals in Hesse, Germany. This study will examine the establishment of these hospitals at the onset of the Reformation, and will chart their history throughout the early modern period. Bureaucratic and administrative documentation will be contrasted to the pauper petitions to gain a wider and more nuanced view of the place of these hospitals within society. -

COHN – P 325 Xeroxed registers of birth, marriage and death Marion Rene Cohn was born in 1925 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and raised in Germany and Romania until she immigrated to Israel (then Palestine) in 1940 and since then resided in Tel Aviv. She was among the very few women who have served with Royal British Air Forces and then the Israeli newly established Air Forces. For many years she was the editor of the Hasade magazine until she retired at the age of 60. Since then and for more than 30 years she has dedicated her life to the research of German Jews covering a period of three centuries, hundreds of locations, thousands of family trees and tens of thousands of individuals. Such endeavor wouldn’t have been able without the generous assistance of the many Registors (Standesbeamte), Mayors (Bürgermeister) and various kind people from throughout Germany. Per her request the entire collection and research was donated to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem and the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt am Main. She passed away in 2015 and has left behind her one daughter, Maya, 4 grandchildren and a growing number of great grandchildren. 1 P 325 – Cohn This life-time collection is in memory of Marion Cohn's parents Consul Erich Mokrauer and Hetty nee Rosenblatt from Frankfurt am Main and dedicated to her daughter Maya Dick.
