Arena Aufschalke Stadium, Gelsenkirchen 21/10/2004 20:30:00 (Local Time) UEFA Cup Group A, Matchday 1 FC Schalke 04 v FC Basel 1893 MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Johan Verbist (BEL) Assistant Referee Danny Huens (BEL) Assistant Referee Claude Gregoire (BEL) Fourth Referee Eddie Vermeirsch (BEL) UEFA Delegate Thomas Partl (AUT) Referee Observer Christer Fällström (SWE) Reporter Mark Bennett (GER) MATCH BACKGROUND FC Schalke 04 have proved the value of entering the UEFA Intertoto Cup competition by reaching the UEFA Cup group stage. The German club were one of the three qualifiers from that competition after finishing seventh in last season’s Bundesliga. Comfortable qualification The success gave them a place in the UEFA Cup first round proper where a first leg hat trick from Ebbe Sand, and another hat trick in the return leg from Mike Hanke, gave Schalke a dominating 9-1 aggregate win over Latvian club FHK Liepajas Metalurgs and a place in the group stage draw. Limited experience This will be the first time that Schalke, the 1996/97 UEFA Cup winners and the last club to win the competition under the old two-legged final format, have met Swiss opposition in UEFA club competitions. FC Basel 1893 have had one previous encounter with a German club, and suffered a 7-3 aggregate defeat in the first round of the 1978/79 UEFA Cup. FC Basel 1893 have also played in another competition to reach this stage. Terek overcome The Swiss champions were beaten 5-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League by FC Internazionale Milano, but moved into the UEFA Cup, and came successfully through the first round with a win against the Russian Cup holders FC Terek Grozny. -

Both teams lost their opening games on Saturday and a second defeat here could well signal the end of their ambitions. • If that were not enough to guarantee nerves, the fact this fixture is a reprise of the sides' stormy encounter in qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup means tension levels may be high at St. Jakob-Park. • Switzerland went down 1-0 to the Czech Republic in the tournament's curtain-raiser, succumbing to Václav Svěrkoš's 71st-minute goal. To compound that blow to Swiss morale, the co-hosts also lost the services of captain and chief striker Alexander Frei for the remainder of the tournament with a knee ligament injury. • Switzerland had never before lost their first match in a major tournament but for Turkey, this backs-to-the-wall situation is nothing new following reverses in the opening game of every single previous finals appearance – at the 1954 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and EURO '96™ and UEFA EURO 2000™. • Fatih Terim's men sit at the foot of the Group A table having lost 2-0 to Portugal in Geneva through goals from Pepe and Raul Meireles. -

Liverpool require three points to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2008/09. Previous meetings • In the 2002/03 first group stage, Basel drew 1-1 at Anfield on matchday two. They then led Liverpool 3-0 at home on matchday six only for the Reds to earn a 3-3 draw with a second-half fightback. Steven Gerrard played in both games but was substituted at half-time in Basel. • For Liverpool, the 3-3 result was not enough – Basel still pipped them to second place in the group by a point. • The lineups at Anfield on 25 September 2002 were: Liverpool: Dudek, Carragher, Henchoz, Hyypiä, Riise, Murphy, Gerrard, Cheyrou, Heskey (Diouf 71), Owen (Berger 79), Baroš. This is their third finals appearance and they will be hoping it proves third time lucky after two previous first-round exits in 1996 and 2004, on both occasions following up an opening draw with two defeats. • Karel Brückner's Czech Republic side qualified as winners of Group D, where they finished two points clear of Germany having won nine and lost just one of 12 qualifying games. They sealed their finals place in memorable fashion on 17 October 2007, beating Germany 3-0 in Munich through goals from Libor Sionko, Marek Matějovský and Jaroslav Plašil.
