Most European countries imposed harsh physical distancing measures to save lives, and an economic downturn then ensued. As the countries of Europe and North America were cau- tiously trying to open up their economies in May 2020, there were questions about the short-term and long-term impact of the coro- navirus pandemic, the most important being whether the spread of the virus would intensify after the summer. With the number of Covid-19 cases rapidly increasing in September and October and with no vaccine available yet, governments in Europe began to impose stricter regulations to slow the spread of the virus.

His legacy to his successor Ursula von der Leyen is largely a heap of dust and ashes. Five years ago he came to power with a fanfare for the future. The European Union was to be given a new burst of vitality, become closer to its citizens, at last put an end to its constant preoccupation with itself, and work towards solving the real problems of our times. None of these good intentions have been transformed into reality, not even notionally. Instead, the situation has become worse – a whole lot worse. This is due not least to the fact that the United Kingdom is on the verge of leaving the Euro- pean Union.

  • NORDEFCO – Nordic Defence Industry Cooperation – Call for Action
Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm, 21 August 2018 NORDEFCO Chair, Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence Mr. Morten Tiller, National Armaments Director of Norway Mr. Raimo Jyväsjärvi, National Armaments Director of Finland Lieutenant General, Flemming Lentfer, National Armaments Director of Denmark Mr. Göran Mårtensson, Director General and National Armaments Director of Sweden Food for Thought Paper – Considerations on the European Defence Fund and the EDIDP Work Programme Introduction As leaders of the Nordic Defence & Security Industry Associations, we are committed to support the Nordic Armed Forces. We consider that it is paramount to strengthen Nordic cooperation in the field of armaments and defence industries, to contribute to more efficient use of limited R&D resources, economies of scale and optimized lifecycle costs. The Nordic defence industry associations therefore support a broadened and deepened Nordic defence cooperation. The purpose of this letter is to extend an invitation to initiate a discussion at Nordic level focusing on the benefits that could be reaped from common participation in activities undertaken within the framework of the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the EDIDP work programme. Furthermore, we also would like to restate the objective put forward in our common letter to the Nordic ministers in 2015: 1. Increased Nordic defence cooperation and procurements in order to support a well- functioning Nordic defence home market based on sound market principles. 2. Nordic articulated consensus on common positions vis-à-vis the EU. Moreover, we share the view that if favourable framework conditions are put in place, and the Nordic nations are prepared to act to develop a structured strategic partnership with the Nordic defence industry, the industry will become an even stronger force multiplier for the Nordic armed forces.
