INTRODUCTION

Denmark has one of Europe’s most flexible and wellfunction- ing labor markets featuring competitive salary levels, a highly skilled and productive workforce and excellent up and down- scaling conditions for companies. On this backdrop Danish Defence and Security Industries Association (FAD) embodies several highly advanced, competitive and specialized member companies constituting a sector with growth in revenues and exports. With currently more than 100 members, FAD is a solid representative for the Danish defence, security, aircraft and space industry.

In early 2018, the new Defence Agreement 2018 – 2023 came into being. With a substantial raise in defence spending, the agreement is setting a very promising scene for the develop- ment of the Danish armed forces for the next six years.

In FAD, we are convinced that apart from buying new equip- ment, an even closer cooperation with industry on mainte- nance, repair and overhaul of equipment and training will ben- efit the armed forces and provide “more bang for the buck”. This should be elements in the ongoing developments of the armed forces.

Cyberthreats are severe and persistent. In FAD, we very much welcome the significantly strengthening of cyber protection set out in the new Defence Agreement. This is good news for companies and the society in general.

The coming years will be important for the industry. First, a revised National Defence Industrial Strategy will lay framework for the industry in the years to come. Key here is to maintain and develop further the competitive industrial base in Den- mark. Focus should especially be on the rapid global develop- ment in technology and R&D. In addition, the strategy should underpin areas where Danish companies have an edge.

Second, a continued strong focus will be on industrial part- nership and cooperation with the US in all areas of defence, security, aviation and space. Access for Danish defence com- panies to the US market for defence equipment is paramount. We are well underway but the US being by far the largest single market for Danish defence companies it is now time to benefit even further of the close Danish ties with the US armed forces and industry. FAD FACTS & FIGURES 2019 – 20 5

Third, focus will increasingly be on the European defence market with the launching of the highly ambitious EU Defence Fund. Even with the Danish opt-out on European defence co- operation Danish companies will have to find ways to partici- pate in the joint efforts to develop a stronger and more innova- tive European defence industrial base.

Danish defence and security industry offers cutting edge solu- tions and parts to armed forces and defence contractors all over the world. FAD is the national body for the industry which we are proud to present in this folder. Please do not hesitate to contact us for all matters regarding cooperation with Danish companies.

DANISH DEFENCE, SECURITY, CYBER, AIRCRAFT AND SPACE MARKET

Denmark has a wide range of companies supplying products and services suitable for applications in defence, security, cy- ber, aircraft and space. Most FAD member companies serve civil as well as military markets.

DEFENCE, SECURITY AND CYBER A large proportion of Danish defence industry comprises de- fence electronics, including sensors, command and control systems, surveillance and radar technology, as well as hard- ware for different purposes such as munition, ballistic protec- tion, minesweeping equipment, parts and systems for vehicles and maritime solutions.

AIRCRAFT AND SPACE The Danish aircraft and space industry is a world-leading sub- contractor of high tech solutions for a variety of purposes.

For aeronautical purposes, Danish companies provide elec- tronic and mechanical components for aircrafts, helicopters and missiles as well as certification, maintenance, support and training. Not surprisingly, overlap between companies with ac- tivities in aviation and space industry is rather common.

For space, Danish companies provide nanosatellite platforms, high-tech electronics for satellites and space rockets as well as equipment for improving and testing the health of astronauts. 58 FAD FACTS & FIGURES 2019 – 20

DANISH DEFENCE INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY

The Danish parliament acknowledge the importance of main- taining and developing the national defence industrial base for reasons of national security. The National Defence Indus- trial Strategy lays the foundation for this. The strategy shows how Denmark can maintain and develop competitive industrial competences and capabilities in the field of defence, and how these can be necessary for the protection of Denmark’s essen- tial security.

INDUSTRIAL COOPERATION CONTRACTS

Foreign suppliers of defence equipment and defence services may meet obligations for industrial cooperation with domestic companies if the Ministry of Defence determines that an acqui- sition meets the following requirements:

–– Industrial cooperation is necessary for the protection of es- sential Danish security interests

–– Obligations for industrial cooperation will not distort com- petition on the market for non-military goods and services

–– The acquisition is above 50 million DKK
