Don DeLillo’s Promiscuous Fictions: The Adulterous Triangle of Sex, Space, and Language Diana Marie Jenkins A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of English University of NSW, December 2005 This thesis is dedicated to the loving memory of a wonderful grandfather, and a beautiful niece. I wish they were here to see me finish what both saw me start. Contents Acknowledgements 1 Introduction 2 Chapter One 26 The Space of the Hotel/Motel Room Chapter Two 81 Described Space and Sexual Transgression Chapter Three 124 The Reciprocal Space of the Journey and the Image Chapter Four 171 The Space of the Secret Conclusion 232 Reference List 238 Abstract This thesis takes up J. G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model. I discuss ten DeLillo novels and one play – Americana, Players, The Names, White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, the play Valparaiso, The Body Artist, Cosmopolis, and the pseudonymous Amazons – that feature adultery narratives.

Out of a total of 15,000 movie broadcasts on the 8 major British channels, 2% were French films, with France constituting the number 2 source of foreign films, behind the United States (68%), but ahead of Germany (1.5%) and Italy (1.1%). Once again, Channel 4 was the leading broadcaster of French films. 30 titles were included in this channel's line-up, showing nevertheless a decrease of 16 titles compared with 1997. These films were generally aired on Sunday nights, around midnight. This was the case for Jacquot de Nantes, la Lectrice, and for Nikita, which attracted the highest audiences of any French-language film on this channel. More French films were programmed on Channel 4 than on BBC 1 and BBC 2 combined. BBC 2 broadcast 16 French titles in 1998, 4 less than in 1997. These films were nonetheless more recent than those aired on Channel 4, including titles such as les Apprentis, Elisa and even Léon. Close to 4% of all movies programmed on this channel were French. BBC 1 restricted its programming to 6 English-language coproductions this year. Sitting in between these 2 large broadcasting groups was CLT's Channel 5, a small but thriving channel, which presented 12 French titles in 1998, 9 more than the previous year.

This was the fourth consecutive year of growth in the number of French films scheduled (359 in 1995, 379 in 1996, and 404 in 1997). 91 films were programmed on Telepiu, and 390 on the free TV channels. Italian TV channels also devoted a larger share of their line-up to French fare. Of the more than 12,000 movie broadcasts, French films were aired 955 times, taking out 7.8% of film slots, showing an increase of 3.4 points compared with 1997. Their share of movie airtime rose significantly on the free TV channels, up from 1.9% to 5.3%. Traditionally giving greatest exposure to French films, RAI 3 bested past records this year. With 107 titles programmed, it outstripped even Telepiu, the specialist movie channel, in which Canal Plus had recently acquired a stake. The three public broadcasters stepped up the number of French films offered in 1998, demonstrated by an increase on RAI 1 from 41 titles broadcast in 1997 to 77 in 1998, and on RAI 2, from 30 to 32 titles. Of all the commercial channels, Rete 4 had always been the most oriented to French films. This year, it broadcast 84 titles, 38 more than the previous year.
