It’s Better to Know! Learn the Signs. Act Early. Learning About Developmental Milestones All of us want our children to be happy and healthy. We want what is best for them. This story is about my family as we learn that “It’s Better To Know” about developmental milestones. Developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age. Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, and act. Milestones offer important clues about a child’s development. The developmental milestones you will learn about in this fotonovela will give you a general idea of what to expect as your child grows. Not reaching these milestones, or reaching them much later than other children, could be a sign of a developmental delay. Trust your instincts. If you have concerns about your child’s development, the best thing to do is talk with your doctor. It’s Better To Know! was produced by the Organization for Autism Research with funding provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. www.cdc.gov/actearly iii He’s fine. I picked up this pamphlet in the waiting room.

  • JEANNE MOREAU: NOUVELLE VAGUE and BEYOND February 25 - March 18, 1994
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release February 1994 JEANNE MOREAU: NOUVELLE VAGUE AND BEYOND February 25 - March 18, 1994 A film retrospective of the legendary French actress Jeanne Moreau, spanning her remarkable forty-five year career, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on February 25, 1994. JEANNE MOREAU: NOUVELLE VAGUE AND BEYOND traces the actress's steady rise from the French cinema of the 1950s and international renown as muse and icon of the New Wave movement to the present. On view through March 18, the exhibition shows Moreau to be one of the few performing artists who both epitomize and transcend their eras by the originality of their work. The retrospective comprises thirty films, including three that Moreau directed. Two films in the series are United States premieres: The Old Woman Mho Wades in the Sea (1991, Laurent Heynemann), and her most recent film, A Foreign Field (1993, Charles Sturridge), in which Moreau stars with Lauren Bacall and Alec Guinness. Other highlights include The Queen Margot (1953, Jean Dreville), which has not been shown in the United States since its original release; the uncut version of Eva (1962, Joseph Losey); the rarely seen Mata Hari, Agent H 21 (1964, Jean-Louis Richard), and Joanna Francesa (1973, Carlos Diegues). Alternately playful, seductive, or somber, Moreau brought something truly modern to the screen -- a compelling but ultimately elusive persona. After perfecting her craft as a principal member of the Comedie Frangaise and the Theatre National Populaire, she appeared in such films as Louis Malle's Elevator to the Gallows (1957) and The Lovers (1958), the latter of which she created a scandal with her portrayal of an adultress.

1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

JOHN CASSAVETES: AT THE LIMITS OF PERFORMANCE A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Cinema Studies in the University of Canterbury by Luke Towart University of Canterbury 2014 Table of Contents Acknowledgements…………………………………………………………………………....1 Abstract………………………………………………………………………………………..2 Introduction……………………………………………………………………………………3 Chapter One: Performative Opposition: A Woman Under the Influence…………………….20 Chapter Two: A New Kind of Acting: Shadows……………………………………………..52 Chapter Three: Documentaries of Performance: Faces……………………………………...90 Conclusion…………………………………………………………………………………..122 Bibliography………………………………………………………………………………...134 Filmography………………………………………………………………………………...141 1 Acknowledgements Thank you to Alan Wright, my primary supervisor, and Mary Wiles, my secondary supervisor, for their guidance whilst writing this thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the central role of performance in three of the films of John Cassavetes. I identify Cassavetes’ unique approach to performance and analyze its development in A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Shadows (1959) and Faces (1968). In order to contextualize and define Cassavetes’ methodology, I compare and contrast each of these films in relation to two other relevant film movements. Cassavetes’ approach was dedicated to creating alternative forms of performative expression in film, yet his films are not solely independent from filmic history and can be read as being a reaction against established filmic structures. His films revolve around autonomous performances that often defy and deconstruct traditional concepts of genre, narrative structure and character. Cassavetes’ films are deeply concerned with their characters’ isolation and inability to communicate with one another, yet refrain from traditional or even abstract constructions of meaning in favour of a focus on spontaneous, unstructured performance of character. Cassavetes was devoted to exploring the details of personal relationships, identity and social interaction.

FALL 2020 ACADEMIC REGALIA Though our ceremonies look different this year, regalia traditions are beloved, timeless and span decades — and pandemics. Our graduates have earned the right to don regalia and adornments for the rest of their lives that reflect the dedication they have shown to their field and the love they have for their alma mater. The custom of recognizing the accomplishments of scholars through distinctive dress, color and ceremony began in the Middle Ages and has been adopted by various academic institutions throughout the world. American academic regalia developed from the English traditions that originated at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford and has been in continuous use in this country since Colonial times. Institutions of higher learning in the United States have adopted a system for identifying different academic degrees by use of specific gowns, hoods and colors. The baccalaureate (bachelor’s) gown is identified by long pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has a very long sleeve, closed at the bottom, and the wearer’s arm is placed through an opening in the front of the sleeve. Master’s gowns also are distinguished by green panels down the front of the gown. Doctoral gowns are distinguished by velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown. Three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve also may mark the doctorate. The colorful hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates represent the specific degree earned and the degree-granting institution. English language. doi: 10.1386/seci.7.2.135_1 ISABELLE VANDERSCHELDEN Manchester Metropolitan University The ‘beautiful people’ of Christophe Honoré: New Wave legacies and new directions in French auteur cinema ABSTRACT KEYWORDS Drawing on current debates on the legacy of the New Wave on its 50th anniversary French cinema and the impact that it still retains on artistic creation and auteur cinema in France auteur cinema today, this article discusses three recent films of the independent director Christophe French New Wave Honoré: Dans Paris (2006), Les Chansons d’amour/Love Songs (2007) and La legacies Belle personne (2008). These films are identified as a ‘Parisian trilogy’ that overtly Christophe Honoré makes reference and pays tribute to New Wave films’ motifs and iconography, while musical offering a modern take on the representation of today’s youth in its modernity. Study- adaptation ing Honoré’s auteurist approach to film-making reveals that the legacy of the French Paris New Wave can elicit and inspire the personal style and themes of the auteur-director, and at the same time, it highlights the anchoring of his films in the Paris of today. Far from paying a mere tribute to the films that he loves, Honoré draws life out his cinephilic heritage and thus redefines the notion of French (European?) auteur cinema for the twenty-first century. 135 December 7, 2010 12:33 Intellect/SEC Page-135 SEC-7-2-Finals Isabelle Vanderschelden 1Alltranslationsfrom Christophe Honoré is an independent film-maker who emerged after 2000 and French sources are mine unless otherwise who has overtly acknowledged the heritage of the New Wave as formative in indicated.
