Prestigious Award for HBH! Herne Bay High School has become one of the first schools in England to win a new national award for making a commitment to develop its students to be the best they can be in competitive school sport. Herne Bay High School was one of only 104 schools, which included only a handful of secondary schools across the country, with HBHS being the only in to receive the special School Games Platinum Award. The Award is part of the School Games Mark, a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 and administered by national charity the Youth Sport Trust, which had close to 9,000 applicants this year. Its aim is to reward schools for a commitment to the development of competition across schools and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision, grading them either bronze, silver or gold, and assists schools in developing an action plan for future progress to better the provisions available to students. The Platinum Award is the new fourth level of the award scheme, introduced earlier this year to celebrate schools who had shown consistently high-levels of enthusiasm and commitment to school sport. Applications are only open to those schools who achieved five successive gold awards. To achieve the gold award a school must meet a certain set of criteria, which includes engaging a high percentage of young people in both curricular and extracurricular activities, participating in a minimum number of competitions across different sports and levels, and reaching out to target groups including young leaders, volunteers, and those previously identified as the school’s least-active pupils. Jon Boyes, HBHS Principal said “To receive the Platinum mark is a truly outstanding achievement, and recognises nationally the truly exceptional work the PE department at Herne Bay High school make in promoting and delivering school sport within the community. I am immensely proud of them all”. The school PE department said “We are obviously very please to receive such an amazing award in recognition of what we do here. None of this could have been possible without the students we have had over the years and will have in the future, giving up their time to attend our clubs and events, representing the school and achieving so much. We would also like to thank all of our current and past staff, both in and out of the PE department, who give up countless hours to provide so many amazing opportunities for our students. Finally, all of the current and ex students, parents and teachers who helped support our application for the award, we would like to thank you. Without your kind words and support this would not have been possible. We now look forward to taking school sport at HBH to the next level!” Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “We are pleased to introduce the new Platinum Award this year to give these exemplary schools the recognition which they deserve. We are extremely proud of all our award winners for the passion which they have shown towards the School Games and their dedication to providing opportunities for all young people to take part in competitive school sport. “At a time when young people are becoming less healthy and less active, the School Games provides opportunities for millions across the country to participate in sport and reap the benefits of an active lifestyle both on and off the field. Schools like Herne Bay High School are really leading the way.” For more information about the School Games Mark visit: https://www.yourschoolgames.com/how-it-works/school-games-mark/

Mini Community Games The ever popular mini- community games week in term one involved endball for the girls and touch rugby for the boys in their doubles lessons. The year 7 & 8 boys and girls also completed cross-country in the single lessons to try and earn a place in the cross country team for the upcoming District Cross Country race. During the week, students worked hard to proudly represent their mini-community and earn valuable points. A great effort was shown by all involved throughout the 5 communities. The results for the term were: 1st– Neptune 73 points 2nd Venus 71 points 3rd –Jupiter 66 points 4th –Mercury 58 points 5th-Saturn 48 points Currently the boys are competing in football and the girls in cheerlead- ing during their double lessons. In the single lessons, KS3 students have been trying their hand at dodgeball for the boys and Danish long ball for the girls. Good luck everyone! Volunteering and Leadership at HBHS: MorningMorning MentorMentor SportsSports The Morning Mentor Sports programme continues to thrive this year, with a whopping 36 mentor groups, up 14 from last year, competing and over 60 students volunteering to be leaders and run the sessions! After registering an interest to volunteer and run the programme, students were then trained for 4 weeks during term 1. During the first week of the training the students developed the skills required to be a leader; these included communication, motivation, team work and organisational skills. The second week then focussed on the rules and regulations required to officiate benchball and the skills required to take on the role of an official. The next weeks looked at applying the skills and rules covered correctly when officiating. The leaders were then divided between days of the week ready to run the Morning Mentor Sports programme. The competitions began in term 2 with the mentor groups being divided between the five mornings. Mentor groups have been very competitive throughout, with both students and staff joining in and calling from the side-lines to encourage their teams along. Students have enjoyed the first of this year’s competitions and the mentors have even commented on how the competitions have “really gelled their students together as a team” and how “students really enjoy mentor sports, it’s nice to see all of my students so active and smiley”. The impact of this is then noticeable during other mentor sessions during the week. A true reflection of the hard work the leaders put in every morning to ensure the competitions are a success. With the changes to the schools mentoring system last year it has meant the students are competing in Key Stages, which from a competition point of view means it has been fairer and more enjoyable for the mentees involved as year 7s are not being defended by year 11s!. The winners for the first round of KS3 competitions are as follows: Monday - NGY Tuesday - JVW Wednesday - VAM On a Thursday and Friday KS4 competed however, because of the students exams, revision sessions and applying for 6th forms/colleges all affecting numbers each week they have had a more casual term of competitions. Congratulations to all the winners and students who took part. Good luck to all the other mentor groups involved for next term! Sports Partnership: Page 4 Competitions It has been another extremely busy start to the term for the Herne Bay and East Kent Coastal School Sports Partnership, supporting local Primary schools with the delivery of High Quality PE lessons and delivering a wide number of competitions for both the Primary and Secondary schools across the district. Out of these events, Herne Bay High School has hosted the PE Co-ordinator meeting that involved 24 teachers from different schools in the alliance, Sports Crew Training for over 100 pupils, KS1 Basketball Development that involved 12 teams and a Primary Speed Stacking event that involved a total of 26 teams as well as the KSG Secondary School Rowing qualifier that saw over 200 pupils attend from a range of secondary schools across Kent. The school has also supported us in hosting the Herne Bay and Canterbury KSG handball qualifiers for U13 and U15 Boys and Girls. Along with a Yr5/6 Basketball competition, a KS1 and KS2 Wake up and Shake up competition and the Primary District Football tournament, the Sports Partnership has also organised the Secondary School Cross Country event that saw all of the secondary schools in the Canterbury District take part on a surprisingly fresh day which made a difference from the usual downpour! We have also been extremely fortunate in having Herne Bay High students and Sports Leaders assisting us at all of these events, showing excellent commitment and leadership qualities. A huge thank you must go to those students and to all that played some part in these events. We are looking forward to using Herne Bay High school and their excellent facilities for another busy term of events and competitions from January. “Students have many opportuni ties to develop in Sport” Ofsted, 2014

Partnership Leadership Opportunities Every year through the Sports Partnership we are able to offer a range of events that our in school leaders can use to develop their leadership skills further. This year we continue this and have a wide variety of events for students to volunteer and sign up to including; KS1 Basketball, Yr 5&6 Basketball, Wake Up and Shake Up, KS1&2 Speed Stacking, Yr 5&6 Sportshall Athletics, Yr 7&8 Sportshall Athletics, Yr 5&6 Rugby, Yr 2 Infant Agility and KS2 Quicksticks Hockey. Through these events the leaders, who are usually either Morning Mentor Sport leaders or BTEC Sport students can use the hours towards their Leadership qualifications and awards. Often the students then use what they have learnt to continue with their development within their own sports clubs outside of school time.

Issue 21 Outdoor Education at HBHS: Community Support Herne Bay High school members of the OAA team have been assisting St Nicholas school deliver the BCU 1 star award to their pupils so they are able to gain accreditation whilst hav- Nethergong Canoeing ing fun. The students all enjoyed success as well as a journey around Canterbury. Residential Students who attend the OAA extra-curricular clubs had the opportunity to undertake a canoeing residential along the Great Stour between the 15th - 17th September. This included an overnight stay at the Nethergong campsite, which allowed students the opportunity to undertake some fishing. The OAA department is currently in the process of organising a residential to North Wales and allow students to undertake mountain walking and outdoor rock climbing in Easter 2018.

OAA Holiday Camps Ardeche Trip 2017 During the summer holidays and the October The Ardeche residential took place between half term the school, alongside Active Life the 8th and 16th July and once again proved delivered a series of OAA activities for local to be a very popular educational visit. children as part of the summer camps Students enjoyed a wide range of activities programme. The sessions included: including a 2 day canoe decent, rock climbing, caving, rock jumping, high ropes courses and Canoeing around Canterbury team building games. Rock climbing at Harrisons Rocks in Once again the student were a real credit to Groombridge the school and received exceptional praise Mountain biking around Clowes woods from the instructors and coach drivers for their maturity and excellent behaviour. Issue 21 Page 6 Fixtures and Results: Boys Football Year 7: A ropey start to secondary school football for the year 7 boys. Trials were heavily attended and it was clear the overall ability of the students was the highest we had seen in sometime. Unfortunately, it took the boys a long time to gel together, often playing against each other at weekends, and this led to them losing their first few games against Simon Langton in the league and Oakwood Park in the English Schools Cup. Performances then started to improve as they drew with Abbey in the league and beat Marsh Academy in the Kent Cup. A hard thought game against Canterbury Academy resulted in a narrow 2-1 loss and then a superb performance saw them beat QE 4-1 to put them on high spirits for the next round of the Kent Cup. Unfortunately, a poor first half resulted in the boys being 4-0 down to Dane Court in the first half, with tempers flaring. The players calmed down at half time and following a few tactical changes and a talking to the boys came out and played the best we have seen, winning the second half 4-1. Although, they did lose the game 5-4 the boys should be very pleased with how they came out in the second half and conducted themselves. Hopefully this will put them in a better place to do well in the District Cup in February. Year 8: The Year 8 boys football team have had a mixed season this year, struggling with many injuries and illnesses and so consequently find consistency difficult. Within the league they struggled most and found positive results difficult to come by, being tough to beat but struggling to find a way to keep opponents at bay and doing the damage themselves. In the Kent Cup they had another good year but already had a hard task to replicate last years semi-final achievements. Doing so well to reach the fourth round of the cup before being beaten Rainham Mark , who had also beaten them in the English Schools cup as well. However as injuries and illness have reduced the results of the team have improved and so we look forward to finding consistency again for next season to begin getting some retribution with our league results from this year. There have been some positives though with Anthony Valente once again making the district squad and Thomas Hughes being invited to the training squad, well done boys! Year 9: This season the Year 9 boys have had a few new players come into the side. These changes have allowed the team to change formation and think about a different style of play. The boys have had a very good season in the league overall winning all their games apart from the final game against Simon Langton Boys. This meant that they finished in second position which will help their seeding in the District cup competition in February. The boys reached the third round in both the National cup and the Kent cup losing to very good opposition in close thought games. Harry O’Donnell and Cameron Chamberlain from their performances throughout the season have been selected to represent the District team against other teams in the region. Year 10: The year 1 0 football team have endured an up and down season so far this Autumn term. With a opening day of the season loss to arch rivals Langton, they have also had 3 league games cancelled or rearranged for Cup fixtures, so hopefully the district cup next term will be more successful. In the Kent cup however, the boys fought back from 2-0 down at home to Sir Roger Manwoods, to win 4-3 in a thriller of a match. In the next round however they met a strong Norton Knatchbull team who knocked them out of the cup for the third successive time. The highlight of the season was a rematch against arch rivals Langton in the English Schools Cup. A game which saw HBHS frustratingly hit the bar in the last minute of full time. Herne Bay, holding out for penalties against a stronger opposition, then conceded in the last minute of extra time resulting in a 3-2 loss. Girls Football Girls football have had a successful start to the season with a third round run in the Kent Cup. Unfortunately an early exit in the English Schools FA happened with the fixture being played in Essex. Excellent commitment and numbers improving from last year has meant students have improved as the year has gone on. Herne Bay Rangers have begun a satellite club which is being run on a Friday afterschool to keep the girls engaged and improving whilst the basketball season is carried out. Girls Netball Year 7: Netball has been a huge success for the year 7 girls with the first game of the season kicking off with a 11-0 win against Simon Langton Girls School. Numbers have been fantastic and the standard has been very high with a successful start to the season. With the basketball season being played over Christmas, netball has been put on hold, however we look to continue our impressive run in the new year! Year 8: The year 8s so far this season have worked hard as a team in games and training. They have been successful in a couple of games and unfortunate in others. They are beginning to find their feet and gel as a team. The next part of the season begins after February half term and we hope they can continue to develop on the success they have had so far and continue to perform well. Year 9: The girls have played against a number of different schools this year and have come away with a mixture of results. The games have always been highly competitive and close between other schools benefitting their progression in various skills. Molly Soutan and Mia Surridge have worked incredibly hard at their shooting and have come on leaps and bounds. There continues to be a growth in the number of students training and competing which has increased the dynamics and teamwork which has resulted in pupils training harder during each session. Year 10: The year 1 0 netball team had a good start to the season this year with consistently good numbers turning up to training. This resulted in good team performances for the first half of the season. The squad are excited to continue with the netball season in the new year and hope to bring back some success at the tournament. Boys Basketball Year 7: The year 7 boys started the year slowly, narrowly losing two games through a series of silly mistakes. However, they soon learnt from their mistakes and through continual commitment and high numbers to training sessions the boys sorted things out. They went on to beat Barton Court in a close game, comfortably beat CCW and won a tight game against QE with only 5 players and at times they only had 4 as one player went off injured! The continual improvements in their performances is down to their dedication to keep attending training. We hope this continues and puts them in a good place to enjoy success in the District Tournament after Christmas. Year 8: The year 8 boys basketball team have made a successful start to the season losing just one game which was a narrow defeat to CCW. They are looking forward to the games during term 3 and the opportunity to retain the District tournament title they won last year. Year 9: The boys have continued with their success that they have had in previous years but suffered a big blow before the start of the first game where the captain sustained a severe injury breaking his leg in training from a nasty fall. The team won two games out of three and lost a very close game by one point to CCW in the last thirty seconds of

Herne Bay High School Sports College Newsletter Issue 21 Fixtures and Results Continued Page 7 the fourth quarter. The boys have their final game coming up against QES and then the District tournament in the new year. Year 10: In what has been a transitional year for the year 1 0 basketball players, many not playing for a whole year, they have currently won 2 and lost 1 with 1 game to play. The two wins were a 19-18 victory against Barton Court and a comfortable 23-4 victory against spires. Girls Basketball U14: The U1 4 girls have had a great season, they have grown in confidence and knowledge of the game and have had a positive attitude to improving their game play. They have been a credit to the school in every fixture, representing us in a positive and mature manner. U16: The U1 6 girls have had a mixed start to the season due to Mock exams. We have some new faces and have played some younger students to help us out. It has been great to see them grow in confidence and have had a positive attitude towards improving their game and supporting each other as a team. The girls still have more games to come and their District tournament to compete in. Well done to all the girls for doing so well during the stressful exam period: they have used this as an excellent chance for them to continue to represent the school in a positive and mature manner. Well done girls! Trampolining There has been an specific training session this year for the pupils who are participating in the district qualifying Kent School Games competition in February. The students have been working hard, not only on learning new skills but also learning routines for the upcoming competition. A range of year groups attend the session and they are all amazing at supporting and guiding one another with their routines and skills. We look forward to the upcoming competition.

Kent School Games Handball U13 Boys: After a ‘rusty’ start to the competition against our year 7 team where they thought back well to win, the year 8 boys pulled themselves together, developed their tactics from watching the other games and confidence eventu- ally going on to win the Kent School Games qualification tournament held at Herne Bay High School. They will now go on to represent the area in the Finals on a date TBC. This year we were also lucky enough to enter a year 7 team into the U13 tournament due to a lower number of schools entering. This gave the year 7 boys the chance to experience how the competition works and how the game of handball is played at this level. This was a great learning curve for the boys, who despite being up against students physically a lot bigger than them, narrowly lost their first game against our years 8s that perhaps they should have won and then held their own against a very strong Canterbury High team. Hopefully this is a good sign of things to come next year when they are that bit bigger and stronger! U13 Girls: The under 1 3 handball team won the Kent School Games qualify competition with two comfortable wins over Canterbury High and Spires. This has resulted in the school representing the local area in the East Kent School Games finals coming up in the new year. Well done girls and best of luck for the finals. U15 Boys: The under 1 5 KSG handball tournament was hosted here at HBHS with only 3 teams in total due to a few dropping out. The boys, with two year 9s playing up a year drew 2-2 with Barton Court in the opening fixture. They then had a fierce match against Current reining national champions- Canterbury high School. The boys showed great spirit and dominated most of possession, however their shots were high and not converted, resulting in CHS winning 4-0. Promising for the future though, watch this space. U15 Girls: The girls showed an excellent attitude when competing in the under 1 5 handball tournament. Unfortunately, due to the low numbers at the tournament the girls only managed to play one game against Canterbury High. The girls showed excellent commitment until the final whistle and their were a lot of first time players to Handball as well. Our determination shone and we won the game which now sees us through to the finals at Medway Park. Kent School Games Rowing The rowing teams achieved some amazing results in this years KSG rowing qualifiers. The boys in particular performed very well, with numerous race wins and all four age groups qualifying for the KSG finals in February. The year 7 boys qualified in 2nd place and the year 8s in 4th place for the finals, which are both fantastic efforts considering the lack of experience most of them have in the sport. The year 9 boys were extremely strong, continuing their dominance in the event from last year and winging the qualifier by some 180m from the 2nd placed school! The year 10 team qualified in 4th place, which is incredible considering two of the team members are from year 9 and therefore competing against people a year older and stronger then them. Unfortunately, it wasn't such a success for the girls teams with only the year 8s qualifying for the finals in 6th place. Well done to all the other girls teams though for taking part and trying their best, in what was a very difficult, high calibre competition this year. We would like to wish good luck to all of the teams that qualified for the finals in February and we look forward to letting you know how they got on in the next newsletter. Good luck guys! District Cross Country Championships HBHS entered the year 7 boys and girls races as well as the junior boys and girls races for the district cross country championships this year. A total of 28 runners from years 7-9 did very well on a cold windy day, which made the runs tough. The team results were as follows- Year 7 boys- 3rd, Year 7 girls- 4th, Junior boys- 10th and Junior Girls- 7th, a good set of results in an event hugely dominated by local grammar and private sector schools. A few stand out individual performances have also earnt the following pupils a chance to represent our district in the upcoming Kent Cross Country championships in January. These students are Year 7 boys- Troy Judd (who finished 6th overall) and Joe Mears (who finished 15th overall), Year 7 girl Maisie Jefferies (who finished 4th overall) and Year 9 girl Darcy Hobbs (who finished 3rd overall). A tremendous set of results and good luck in January in the finals. Extra Curricular Clubs Extra curricular clubs have proven very popular this year, with over 400 students from years 7 all the way to year 13 attending a club. Over 20 students on average took advantage of our breakfast clubs, where they receive free breakfast as an incentive from our canteen, with some days reaching 30+ students. Year 7 skating continues to dominate lunchtime participation figures, but this term also saw a sharp rise in fitness suite club attendance, particularly at lunchtimes. After school club attendance was dominated, as expected, by year 7 boys football and the trampolining club, with both having over 80 participants throughout the term. Our extra curricular superstars for this term were Dan Kennedy and George Read, year 10. Both boys attended over 60 clubs throughout the term, meaning on average they nearly went to a club a day. Well done boys what a huge effort that is!

Community Links:

Sports Development Club Links We have continued to work with a range of clubs and organisations to develop the pathway for our students into club level sport. Girls’ football continues to be a focus sport and we are working in partner- ship with Herne Bay Rangers and Herne Bay FC and were successful in our bid to regain KCC satellite club funding to enable the project to continue. A girls’ football after school satellite club is on Fridays, run by Herne Bay Rangers coaches, as a stepping stone between the school club and their community club. Trish Osbourne continues to run a roller hockey club for HBHS stu- dents on a Thursday after school with the aim of trying to develop a team that could take on a roller hockey team by the end of the year. She promotes the local clubs so that students have the opportunity to further develop their skills should they wish. Brian Steele is currently running basketball sessions for primary school students after school on a Tuesday with the aim of developing a youth team to represent Herne Bay. Brian has been helping with some coaching of the year 8 team, progressing their skills and pro- moting his sessions. We will also have a tennis coach from Herne Bay Tennis Club coming in to run sessions for a select number of students starting at the beginning of term 4.

Active Life Partnership Our interaction with the onsite leisure provider Active Life continues to flourish thanks to the positive relationship with the Bay Arena Manager Karen Montecelli. Holiday clubs are an estab- lished part of the Active Life programme and their fitness classes, held in the school dance facili- ties in the evenings and at weekends, are popular and well-attended. Recreational roller skating numbers continue to be high and our students enjoy lunch time and after school skating in high numbers using the Active Life skate equipment free of charge. We have worked together to re- package community activity courses such as trampolining and climbing, which utilise the skills and qualifications of HBH PE staff. An ever-growing number of our sixth form gain employment with the company, from bowls mats attendants to recreation assistants at the Bay Arena to a range of roles at the Herons Pool and Fitness Centre or over at Whitstable Pool. The company has also been very helpful providing work experience placements and sports leadership opportunities for Year 12 and 13 BTEC Sport students at all of their sites, including Kingsmead over in Canterbury.

If you are involved with a club that would like to work in partnership with HBHS then please don’t hesitate to contact our Head of PE Chris Scorer at [email protected]
