EXPEDITIO - Center for Sustainable Spatial Development is an NGO based in Kotor (Montenegro), founded in 1997 by six students of architecture at the University of Belgrade. Since that time, EXPEDITIO has implemented more than 100 projects and activities addressing various issues of sustainable spatial development, such as: urban and rural planning and management, cultural heritage and landscape, sustainable cities, public spaces, green architecture etc.

EXPEDITIO’s mission is to encourage sustainable spatial development in Montenegro and SEE region through activity in the fields of sustainable architecture, cultural heritage, urban planning and through projects that encourage overall development of the civil society.

The main types of activities conducted by EXPEDITIO include cross-disciplinary engagement regarding urban sustainability, such as: developing studies and researches, organizing events (workshops, discussions, lectures, seminars, exhibitions …), advocacy activities, campaigns, publishing, actions in public spaces etc.

The structure of EXPEDITIO consists of: Assembly, Board of directors, Executive Board, Members and Volunteers. EXPEDITIO has 5 full-time employees and a number of occasional collaborators. EXPEDITIO head office is based in Kotor (Montenegro) and also has a branch office in Belgrade (Serbia).

EXPEDITIO has been involved in various participatory planning and decision making processes and was represented in the National Council for Sustainable Development of Montenegro. EXPEDITIO is an active member of several regional and EU networks, such as: Civil Scape, Balkan Express Network, Europa Nostra and the South East European (SEE) Heritage Network.

For its activities in the field of urban development, EXPEDITIO has received several awards and recognitions at the national and regional level.

The vision of EXPEDITIO is organized space for better life. EXPEDITIO center for sustainable spatial development Page 10 Page 11 Project title Architectural Research of the Former French Embassy Building in Cetinje Key words arrchitecture, research, presentation, promotion, cultural heritage Aim of the project The aim of architectural research of the former French Embassy Building in Cetinje was to create the necessary expertise basis for further process of rehabilitation through archive researches and architectural analysis, as well as to present and promote the values of this important cultural heritage. This architectural research is significant because it brought new information about this property from from several aspects. Thanks to research we discovered new knowledge about the project designer, project participants, architectural features and the subsequent transformation of the building, as well as about architecture in Cetinje at the beginning of the twentieth century and the relationships that existed between Montenegro and France. The research was conducted as one of the activities within the project Ljubljana Process - Rehabilitating our Common Heritage, which coordinates Task Force on Culture and Society of Regional Cooperation Council (RCC TFCS), with headquarters in Cetinje. Leader partner in implementation on behalf of Montenegro was Ministry of Culture. Activities • The research included: studying of literature, researching archival materials, technical recording and architectural analysis of the former French Embassy Building. Specific objectives of the project are: 1. Increasing citizens awareness on intercultural dialogue and social values by using public spaces as a field to promote it 2. Improving collaboration between actors dealing with urban and social issues in Albania, Jordan and Montenegro, through joint activities in public spaces 3. The project began in March 2012. EXPEDITIO decided to conduct this project aware of the environmental and energetic crisis in which we live, concentrating on energy sources that are almost exhausted or non-renewable, while their usage causes pollution with considerable disbalance of natural flows. As architects, we are faced with the problem that buildings are responsible for 40-50 % energy consumption and approximately the same percentage of the CO2 emission. Activities The campaign included setting up a website www.expeditio.org/expeditio2 and producing accompanying promotional material – a brochure and a poster. This project was a first step – i.e. informing about the existing types of so-called alternative energy sources and their application in architecture, with special emphasis on solar energy and all its forms, what we see as basis for all further activities in this field. The aims of the volunteer restoration work camp were: - Concrete conservation -restoration activities aimed at preserving and enhancing the values of Perast - Promoting the use of traditional building and conservation techniques, through concrete activities in the camp, where volunteers and local craftsman had an opportunity to become acquainted with and receive training in using those techniques - Engaging local community, craftsmen and all interested people who had an opportunity to observe the activities and become acquainted with the methods of conservation - Promoting the use of traditional building and conservation techniques, through publishing a brochure about restoration of wooden doors. Activities The restoration camp on Viskovic Palace in Perast focused on the conservation and restoration of wooden doors. During the camp, a main entrance door on the Viskovid palace and two doors on the neighbouring house of the Balaban family were restored. Instructed by experts for woodwork, i.e. two carpenters from Sweden, the volunteers had a chance to become acquainted with the whole process of timber restoration and to do the work in practice. The project has made a first big step towards including these localities, as a unique thematic whole, into the modern life of Montenegro and acquainting citizens with this part of their heritage, and tourists with an interesting offer of the Montenegrin tourism. This was the first project- expedition that we have conducted. The choice of the location i.e. Perast proved to have had a decisive role in the further development of EXPEDITIO. Activities During the research, we managed to collected a large quantity of information refering to local legends, historical facts, memories of the local people, to identify all important objects (churches and palaces), to do the reconstruction of the 18th-century coastline, excluding the lower road with the so-called mandradi, to conduct a complete survey of the St. Cross Fortress above Perast. The project was officially supported by the UNESCO.
