The Central Mediterranean Naturalist 4 (1): 35 - 40 Malta: December 2003 ON SOME ALIEN TERRESTRIAL AND FRESHWATER GASTROPODS (MOLLUSCA) FROM MALTA Constantine Mifsud!, Paul Sammut2 and Charles Cachia3 ABSTRACT Nine species of gastropod molluscs: Otala lactea (0. F. MUller, 1774); Cemuella virgata (da Costa, 1778); Cochlicella barbara (Linnaeus, 1758); Oxychilus helveticus (Blum, 1881); Succinea putris (Linnaeus, 1758); Oxyloma elegans (Risso, 1826); Helisoma duryi Wetherby, 1879; Planorbarius comeus (Linnaeus, 1758); and the limacid slug Lehmannia valentiana (A. Ferussac, 1822) are recorded for the first time as alien species from local plant nurseries. For each species a short description and notes on distribution and ecology are given. INTRODUCTION The land and fresh water Mollusca of the Maltese Islands have been recently well treated by Giusti et al. (1995). However, during the last twelve years many non-indigenous plants, shrubs and trees, both decorative species and fruit trees, have been imported from Europe either to embellish local gardens or roadsides or for agricultural purposes. It occurred to the authors that there is the possibility that alien species of molluscs might have been introduced accidentally with these imported plants. This is not a completely new phenomenon. For example, Pomatias elegans and Discus rotundatus occur at San Anton Gardens were they were probably alien introductions due to human activities (Thake, 1973). During recent research to assess the status of some of the endemic molluscs of the Maltese Islands, with special emphasis on the Limacidae, areas where imported plants are stocked were searched for any alien species. This resulted in the discovery of several alien species of terrestrial and freshwater snails, a few of them alive. -

Deviation of environmental salin- ity from the organismal optimum range results in an osmotic stress in osmo- conformers, which keep their fluids isotonic to the environment. The ability to overcome such stress is critical for animals inhabiting areas with considerable salinity variation, such as intertidal areas. In this study, we compared the reac- tion to mild water freshening (from 24 to 14 ‰) in two related species of inter- tidal snails, Littorina saxatilis and L. obtusata, with respect to several aspects: survival, behavior and proteomic changes. The species list includes 96 species and 48 families. Six species are dominant (Bittiolum varium, Costoanachis semiplicata, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Chione cancellata, and Mulinia lateralis) and 25 are commercially important (e.g., Strombus alatus, Busycoarctum coarctatum, Triplofusus giganteus, Anadara transversa, Noetia ponderosa, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Argopecten irradians, Argopecten gibbus, Chione cancellata, Mercenaria campechiensis, and Rangia flexuosa). -

Introduction Any treatment of durophagous (shell-breaking) predation on bivalves and gastropods through geologic time must address the molluscivore's signature preserved in the victim's skeleton. Pre-ingestive breakage or crushing is only one of four methods of molluscivory (Vermeij, 1987; Harper and Skelton, 1993), the others being whole organism ingestion, insertion and extraction, and boring. Other authors in this volume treat the last behavior, whereas whole-organism ingestion, and insertion and extraction, however common, are unlikely to leave preservable evidence. Bivalve and gastropod ecologists and paleoecologists reconstruct predator-prey relationships based primarily on two, although not equally useful, categories of pre-ingestive breakage, namely lethal and sublethal (repaired) damage.
