It is for this very reason, though, that a paradigmatic role has been conferred on Dante in the contemporary debate both by those who consider the canon a stable structure based on inner aesthetic values and by those who see it as a cultural and social construction. For instance, Harold Bloom suggests that ‘Dante invented our modern idea of the canonical’,1 and Edward Said, in his reading of Auerbach, seems to imply that Dante provided foundations for what we call literature tout court.2 While his influence on other poets never ceased, the story of Dante’s explicit canonization through the centuries revolved around the same critical points we are still discussing today: his anti-classical ‘strangeness’ in language and style, the trouble he occa- sions in genre hierarchies and distinctions, and the vastness of the philo- sophical and theological knowledge embraced by the Commedia (and, as a consequence, the relationship between literature and other realms of human experience). Dante’s canonicity is also evinced by the ceaseless debates that he has inspired and the many cultural tensions of which he is the focus. What I will try to do in the next few pages is to reflect on the features that make the Commedia central both to the arguments of the defenders of the aesthetic approach, such as Bloom and Steiner, and to the political claims of the so-called ‘culture of complaint’. As I went through the materials for this paper, I realized that most of the essays I considered relevant to my point had something in common: in a crucial turn of their argument, they mentioned or analysed the episode of Fari- nata and Cavalcante. Was this simply due to the persistent influence of Auerbach’s choice of this canto in Mimesis (1946), or was it related to some crucial thematic or stylistic matter at stake in Inferno X? 21 I will start from the outstanding voice in the debate on the canon, namely that of Harold Bloom. Significantly enough, in The Western Canon the pages devoted to Dante follow the chapter on Shakespeare, right after Bloom’s ‘Preface and Prelude’ and ‘An Elegy for the Canon’. This structural choice suggests that the fate of the canon is largely the fate of Dante and Shakespeare. In Bloom’s opinion, what makes authors canonical is their ‘strangeness, a mode of originality that either can- not be assimilated, or that so assimilates us that we cease to see it as strange’.3 In an evaluative canon, Dante comes immediately after Shake- speare (the centre of the canon), but in a neutral, synchronic perspec- tive, they are paradigms of two different forms of originality: Dante makes the reader feel strange at home, Shakespeare makes us ‘at home out of doors, foreign, abroad. His powers of assimilation and of con- tamination are unique’.4 We’ll come back to this distinction later on. But where does Dante’s originality dwell? Bloom’s answer is implied in the title of his Dante chapter, ‘The Strangeness of Dante: Ulysses and Beatrice’, from which my own title comes: as Dante’s greatest and most audacious inventions (or re-inventions), Ulysses and Beatrice repay his creative effort by making him ‘strange’, and, as a consequence, canoni- cal. At the same time, Dante’s canonicity saves Beatrice from religious censorship: ‘Beatrice would be an offense to the church and even to lit- erary Catholics’ if Dante had not won ‘his wager with the future within a generation after his death’.5 Bloom depicts Dante as irredeemably wild, proud, conservative, and politically incorrect, totally devoted to his poem and its immortality, cruel to his political enemies and anything but generous to his poetic rivals – as the absence of Guido Cavalcanti in the Farinata and Cavalcante episode shows.6 As a consequence, in 1994 Bloom predicted an imminent attack from the ‘school of Resentment’ on Dante, an attack similar to the ‘onslaught’ led by New Historicism against Shakespeare: The New Historicists and allied resenters have been attempting to reduce and scatter Shakespeare, aiming to undo the Canon by dissolving its center. Curiously, Dante, the second center as it were, is not under similar onslaught, either here or in Italy. Doubtless the assault will come, since the assorted multiculturalists would have difficulty finding a more objection- able great poet than Dante, whose savage and powerful spirit is politically 7 incorrect to the highest degree. 22 Bloom goes further and blames the most distinguished interpreters of Dante in the twentieth century, including Curtius and Spitzer, because they approached Dante’s greatness either in relation to the theological and philosophical tradition (Eliot, Singleton, Freccero) or in relation to the real world he so powerfully represented (Barolini). In Bloom’s opinion, both the perspectives, the theological and the secular, could be charged with the same critical crime committed by New Historicism and gender and cultural studies: that of deliberately discarding the aesthetic challenge any great author imposes on critics, reducing the Commedia to mere theology or down-to-earth mimesis. In his violent argument Bloom goes so far as to criticize the most influential Dante scholar of the twentieth century, Erich Auerbach, to whose interpretative achieve- ments he seems completely blind. Dante als Dichter der irdischen Welt (1929) and ‘Figura’ (1939) brilliantly reconciled heaven and earth, life and afterlife, and provided an unrivalled explanation for the radical intermingling of the human and the eternal in the Commedia.

The Standard Model If you don't run with this crowd, you might assume that when I say 'SF', I am using an abbreviation of 'Science Fiction', but here, it means Speculative Fiction. The coinage is a way to cope with the problem that Science Fiction is mysteriously and inextricably joined with the seemingly unrelated literature of Fantasy. Many who are fond of one are fond of the other, to the point where they perceive them as the same thing, in spite of the fact that they seem quite different to non-fans.

As there is no clear boundary between the culture and popular culture, it is also very difficult to define popular fiction due to its all-pervading nature. Popular fiction is always seen and defined in contrast with literary fiction. However, many books of literary fiction share the elements of popular fiction. Similarly, many books of popular fiction include the elements of literary fiction. Hence, there is not a clear boundary between literary fiction and popular fiction. Due to this, it becomes very difficult to define the field of popular fiction and distinguish it from literary fiction. However, fiction writers aim at creating “legitimate untruths,” since they seek to demonstrate meaningful insights into the human condition. While originally portrayed as a benevolent and caring healer in works by Marie de France, Chretien de Troyes, and the anonymous author of Amadas et Ydoine, the witch eventually underwent a dramatic and unfortunate transformation. By the fifteenth century, authors began to portray her as a malevolent and dangerous agent of the Christian Devil. Martin Le Franc, Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim du Bellay, Fran9ois Rabelais, and Pierre Comeille all created evil witch figures that corresponded with this new definition. It was not until the eighteenth century, through the works of Voltaire and the Encyclopedistes, that the rehabilitation of the witch began. By the twentieth century, Anne Hebert, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maryse Conde, and Sebastiano Vassalli began to rewrite the witch character by engaging in a process of demystification and by demonstrating that the "witch" was really just a victim of the society in which she lived. These authors humanized their witch figures by concentrating on the victimization of their witch protagonists and by exposing the ways in which their fictional societies unjustly created identities for their witch protagonists that were based on false judgments and rumors.

    Introduction / 1 KARINE ZBINDEN In Praise of Nuance: An Interview with Tzvetan Todorov Introduction There is something inordinately strange about “introducing” Tzvetan Todorov to the readers of The Canadian Review of Comparative Literature, for he has been a prominent figure in the humanities since the 1960s, engaging with a wide variety of domains, from semantics to semiotics, poetics to ethics, history to philosophical anthropology. Rather than indicating fragmentation of thought, this diversity testifies to an enduring interest in humankind and human experience explored from many different angles. His books, many of them bestsellers, are translated into numerous languages. Strangely, however, there has to date been little commentary on his thought. Perhaps this is due to the fact that his activity eludes categorical definition (is he a historian, a philosopher, a literary critic, a writer, or even a linguist?) — a characteristic it shares with that of another thinker, Mikhail Bakhtin, who has played a part in Todorov’s intellectual development. Todorov has crossed boundaries in various ways: literally, by emigrating from Bulgaria in his twenties and settling down in France; but also on an intellectual level, for he has acted as mediator between cultures. Shortly after his arrival in Paris, he translated some key Russian Formalist texts and helped introduce Roman Jakobson to a French readership; and later he wrote a critical introduction to the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle at a time when few texts were yet available in French. More recently, he has focused on classic texts of French humanist thought, thus reconnecting his contemporaries to their intellectual heritage and linking the ideas of some of the first modern thinkers to our present preoccupations.

    Social Science Fiction from the Sixties to the Present Instructor: Joseph Shack [email protected] Office Hours: To be announced Course Description The label “social science fiction,” initially coined by Isaac Asimov in 1953 as a broad category to describe narratives focusing on the effects of novel technologies and scientific advances on society, became a pejorative leveled at a new group of authors that rose to prominence during the sixties and seventies. These writers, who became associated with “New Wave” science fiction movement, differentiated themselves from their predecessors by consciously turning their backs on the pulpy adventure stories and tales of technological optimism of their predecessors in order to produce experimental, literary fiction. Rather than concerning themselves with “hard” science, social science fiction written by authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin and Samuel Delany focused on speculative societies (whether dystopian, alien, futuristic, etc.) and their effects on individual characters. In this junior tutorial you’ll receive a crash course in the groundbreaking science fiction of the sixties and seventies (with a few brief excursions to the eighties and nineties) through various mediums, including the experimental short stories, landmark novels, and innovative films that characterize the period. Responding to the social and political upheavals they were experiencing, each of our authors leverages particular sub-genres of science fiction to provide a pointed critique of their contemporary society. During the first eight weeks of the course, as a complement to the social science fiction we’ll be reading, students will familiarize themselves with various theoretical and critical methods that approach literature as a reflection of the social institutions from which it originates, including Marxist literary critique, queer theory, feminism, critical race theory, and postmodernism.

Golden Fantasy By Zechariah James Morrison Faculty Advisor, Owen Ewald Second Reader, Doug Thorpe A project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the University Scholars Program Seattle Pacific University 2016 2 Walk into any bookstore and you can easily find a section with the title “Fantasy” hoisted above it, and you would probably find the greater half of the books there to be full of vast rural landscapes, hackneyed elves, made-up Latinate or Greek words, and a small-town hero, (usually male) destined to stop a physically absent overlord associated with darkness, nihilism, or/and industrialization. With this predictability in mind, critics have condemned fantasy as escapist, childish, fake, and dependent upon familiar tropes. Many a great fantasy author, such as the giants Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others, has recognized this, and either agreed or disagreed as the particulars are debated.

By examining the modes of thought available to conquering societies I examine the way in which specific narrative traditions influence the process of justification and legitimization of expansion. Based on my analysis of a specific set of narratives created by Spanish in the Americas, a wide variety of published primary resources, and research in Spanish archives, I look into the narrative traditions of a number of societies in history, assess the construction of the reconquista narrative in Spain, and then cross the Atlantic to examine variety of interest groups that emerged across Spain’s American empire and the narratives that were produced to justify those interests. In successful cases the drama of conquest is normalized through the adoption or construction of legitimizing narratives that tap into prevailing societal self-conceptions or historical relationships.

    Peaceful, prosperous, democratic and respectful of people’s rights, building talk about Europe need to We Europe is an ongoing challenge. For many years it seemed that Europeans lived on a continent of shared values and a common destiny. No one paid attention to the alarm bells warning of growing divisions across the continent, which have become more insistent since the economic and social crisis. These clouds are casting a shadow across Europe’s future, and old demons, long dormant, have started to raise their voices again. about Europe With a deepening values divide there is an urgent need for public debate and a reconsideration of how Europeans can strengthen the European project. Is a “Europe united in diversity” still feasible? Can a consensus be forged on a set of values pertaining to a common European identity? What should be done to preserve European unity? The Council of Europe, with its membership covering Europe from Vladivostok to Lisbon and from Reykjavik to Ankara, and its mission to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law, provides an excellent framework for discuss- ing the current state of thinking and dynamics behind the concept of European identity. For these reasons, the Council of Europe, together with the École nationale d’administration in Strasbourg, held a series of European Identity Debates fea- turing eminent personalities from a variety of backgrounds including politics, civil society, academia and the humanities.
