REPORT SICK AND INJURED ANIMALS TO THE CITY OF OTTAWA If you see an injured domestic animal, such as a dog or cat, or small wild animal, such as a raccoon, squirrel, rabbit or skunk, please call 3-1-1. The City will assess the situation and dispatch a fully trained by-law officer to transport the animal, if needed. The by-law officer will bring the animal to either the Ottawa Humane Society or an emergency veterinary hospital.

The City has 54 by-law officers who have received training in the care and handling of animals. Furthermore, the City is hiring a new wildlife management officer who will lead a specialized team of up to eight officers that will handle animals and deal with the increase in calls.

The Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre, the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and other animal rescue organizations, will continue their good work in caring for sick, injured and orphaned animals.

The City does not respond to calls regarding human-wildlife conflicts, such as raccoons in the garbage or squirrels in attics. These issues are the responsibility of the property owner, who may consult the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre or the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary for information on what to do.

To report animal abuse or neglect, please call the SPCA at 310-SPCA.

The Ottawa Humane Society previously provided animal rescue services in Ottawa, including picking up injured domestic animals and wildlife, while the City responded overnight.

GOULBOURN TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS SOLDIERING ON: RICHMOND THROUGH THE DECADES Saturday, May 26, 2018 1:30 PM 3:30 PM Goulbourn Museum (map) This year being Richmond’s 200th celebration, the Goulbourn Museum staff will be making a presentation on the history of Richmond. Through their collection of artefacts, the Museum staff will unearth the history of Richmond and take us through the significant events that influenced the oldest military settlement into what we know as Richmond nowadays.

After the war in 1812, Richmond was a military settlement being recognized as such in 1818. In 1922 the military handed over control of Richmond and many civilians remained behind and Loyalist settlers arrived. Through their industrious ventures, the residents of Goulbourn Township were well supported and the area continued to grow.

Come and learn more as the Goulbourn Museum staff share the integral part that Richmond played in our local history and Canada’s. The event is free and refreshments will be served. Bring your family, friends and neighbours as everyone is welcome.

My team of amazing volunteers and I are busy planning another fabulous celebration! Join us from 1-10 PM (weather permitting) where will be hosting fun for all ages at the Munster Park. If you joined us last year, you know it was a great event that was full of laughter and excitement. We hope to add a few new things this year, so keep on the lookout for additional information posted on the MCA Facebook page, MunsterOnline.ca and in our e-mail blast! If you are not yet registered to receive the MCA e-mails, please let me know and I will make sure to add your e-mail address into the system.

Another great project in the works Laura Rupert has lived in Munster for 9 is the Munster Legacy Project. We years, owner of Laura Lee Photography, are finalizing our project plan and Event coordinator and volunteer for once finalized will begin to reach Munster, proud hockey Mom of two out to community members to hear boys. Our goal is people laugh. to create a book that captures Munster’s history, memories of the past, and all the great things that have shaped our community into being what it is today. If you are interested in sharing your memoirs, please contact Jude or myself. Youth Sports in Munster Elementary School Our trial run for drop-in basketball has ended, and I must say, it was a great success!

Coffee Time Join us on Thursday mornings from 9-11 at the Munster Community Centre for an adult get together. Have a cup of coffee, a snack and reconnect with your neighbours. Discuss the challenges and benefits of leaving in rural Ottawa, and whatever happens to be on your mind.

No set agenda, everything and anything goes.

Bring ideas, or bring yourself. We can’t wait to see you, hear what you’ve been up to, and chat about community happenings. For more information, contact Bonnie Fuller at 613 838-5253 or Guy Jolly at 613 838-4835. The MCA provides support to this program by covering the costs of supplies. Munster Scouts The 1st Munster Scouts regret to announce that we will be suspending activities in 2018-2019 due to a lack of Participants and Volunteers. Over the past five years, we have struggled to maintain a Beaver Colony and Cub Pack in Munster. Last fall we had to suspend the Beaver program. We are facing a similar situation with the Cubs going into next year as our existing Pack members will be moving on. Equally, we lack Volunteer Scouters to lead both the Pack and Colony. Scouting has existed in Munster for over 40 years, so we are not closing the door on a 're-boot' of the 1st Munster Scouts. If individuals are interested in becoming Group volunteers and/or leaders for next year, please let me know as soon as possible. Finally, I would like to personally thank all the Group Committee Members, Leaders, and Scouters who have stepped up and helped out over my nearly 15 years with the 1st Munster Scouts. I would also like to thank the MCA for sponsoring our Scouting Group for the last several years. Yours in Scouting, Duncan Toswell, Group Commissioner Barb Moulton and family have been 1st Munster Scouts Munster residents for 11 years. Barb has mailto:[email protected] been a Beaver and a Cub Scout leader for six years. She was on the board of the Munster Nursery School when her sons’ attended. Barb has two boys aged 9 and 13. Barb’s hobbies include reading, photography and knitting.

PLEASE YIELD WHEN YOU SEE A GREEN LIGHT COMING YOUR WAY Ottawa’s rural communities are served by 470 volunteer firefighters. Through the Green Light program, volunteer firefighters are equipped with green flashing lights for their personal vehicles. When you see a green light flashing from a driver’s vehicle, it means the driver is a volunteer firefighter responding to an emergency. Please yield the road to these vehicles with green flashing lights. This may mean pulling over, if it is safe to do so, to allow the vehicle to pass. Volunteer firefighters responding to an emergency typically need to drive their personal vehicles to a nearby fire station. Pulling over when you see a firefighter’s green light can have a big impact because every second counts.

TIME FOR AN AUTO INSURANCE REFRESHER At BrokerLink, our brokers are here to act as trusted advisors and simplify insurance. When it comes time for vehicle owners to renew their car insurance, it’s an opportunity for them to assess, with the help of a broker, if their current car insurance coverage meets their needs. To help vehicle owner’s understand this assessment, here’s a rundown of common car insurance terms and an explanation of both mandatory and optional coverages.

THE TERMS

PREMIUM An insurance premium refers to the amount paid for insurance, either annually or a payment plan. Premiums are determined by several factors such as age, location, occupation, how often the person drives their vehicle and the type of vehicle. If a person has changed their location, car, or distance they drive, their premium could change. This is important information

The Munster Mash www.munsteronline.ca P a g e | 12

TIME FOR AN AUTO INSURANCE REFRESHER (cont’d)

DEDUCTIBLE A deductible is the amount paid out of pocket in order to receive insurance funds in the event of a claim. Deductibles vary depending on the coverage type and the insurance provider. Additionally, deductibles can be waived in specific circumstances – such as someone being responsible for damage caused to another person’s car. In such a scenario, the person with the damaged vehicle would not have to pay a deductible. Vehicle owners can ask a BrokerLink broker to assess their current deductibles.

ENDORSEMENTS OR RIDERS Endorsements or riders are changes made to a standard auto policy to increase or reduce the amount of coverage received for specific situations. For example, a driver having a car rental endorsement as part of their insurance coverage will help cover the costs of a rental vehicle if they can’t use their personal vehicle due to an accident. Vehicle owners can ask a BrokerLink broker to assess their current policy to see if increases or reductions are needed.

MANDATORY COVERAGE THIRD PARTY LIABILITY COVERAGE Third party liability can cover the cost of damages to another driver – this includes legal fees if there is a lawsuit and bodily injury or property damage. It’s important for drivers to ask about their amount of third-party liability coverage. Specific regulations and minimum requirements may differ by province; however, these amounts may not cover damages. Drivers in Ontario should carry $2-million third-party liability coverage, while in Alberta, drivers are recommended to carry at least $1-million third-party liability coverage.

ACCIDENT BENEFITS COVERAGE As with third party liability, accident benefits is a mandatory coverage for vehicle owners in Canada. This coverage can provide funds to cover expenses which result if a driver is in an accident, such as medical care or legal fees. Additionally, accident benefits coverage can cover loss wages if a driver is unable to work – minimum amount paid out on most policies are based on the driver’s wages. A BrokerLink broker can provide more details about other limits and coverage.

OPTIONAL COVERAGE WHICH GOES THE EXTRA MILE COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE Comprehensive coverage can provide compensation for damage sustained to a vehicle in an incident other than a collision. This includes damages caused by floods, water, fire, falling objects, break-ins, weather events and collisions with wildlife while driving. Additionally, coverage can be provided for theft of an entire vehicle or for windshield repairs. Drivers can inquire about if they have the coverage and ask a BrokerLink broker for recommendations.

COLLISION COVERAGE Collision coverage can pay for any damage sustained in a collision with another vehicle, an object or roll over. If the vehicle damage is beyond repair, collision coverage may also include compensation for the actual cash value of the vehicle. A BrokerLink broker can explain the ins and outs of collision coverage cash payouts if a vehicle is beyond repair (there are limitations).

ALL-PERILS COVERAGE Most often, all-perils coverage includes aspects of comprehensive and collision coverage. However, a key difference between all perils and comprehensive coverage is it can provide coverage if a vehicle is stolen. Drivers can ask a BrokerLink broker about whether single coverages, such as collision, or a bundled coverage like all-perils will suit their needs.

DRIVE WITH PEACE OF MIND To get a car insurance tune up, contact BrokerLink. Our brokers will do a full assessment of a vehicle owner’s car insurance policy to ensure they get in the driver’s seat with the best coverage for their needs.

Church News

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Face on Huntley Road, Grace Baptist Church Updates Logo Submited by: Matt Semrau, Deacon, Public Relations 613 371-3031 (cell) OTTAWA – Monday May 14, 2018 – Grace Baptist Church (GBC) has replaced their outdoor sign to reflect their new logo. Both were in need of updating due to the depiction of the parliament buildings on the previous logo, which was originally designed before the church moved to 2470 Huntley Road, just outside of Stittsville. GBC has been part of the local community for the last eight years, and you’ve probably seen them leading a donkey at the Stittsville Parade of Lights. They’re also a common attraction at the Richmond Fair, the Carp Fair, and Arts in the Park, selling Christian books from their bright yellow tent. The church is growing steadily and has just hired their first intern for the summer months from Toronto Baptist Seminary. GBC is theologically reformed and their weekly sermons are available for audio download on their website: www.GraceBaptistOttawa.com. The congregation is looking forward to the upcoming summer fairs, as well as their always popular Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the end of August. In addition to a morning service on Sunday, GBC also offers an evening service on Sunday as well as a Bible Study on Wednesday evenings.

It costs over $100 million annually to pay for our fish and wildlife programs and services, of which the Fish and Wildlife Special Purpose Account pays for about two-thirds. Programs supported by the Fish and Wildlife Special Purpose Account include fish culture and stocking, wildlife population studies, research and enforcement.

JUNE 30 - JULY 8, 2018: LICENCE-FREE FAMILY FISHING WEEK

Follow Ontario Fish and Wildlife News on Twitter and Facebook.

The Munster Community Centre is available to rent for private bookings. Many people find it to be a great option over hosting larger gatherings at home. With the installation of an air conditioning unit last summer, it is more functional all year long. Check out www.munsteronline.ca under Community Services for booking details and availability.

COMMUNITY SAFETY As the warm weather approaches the Ottawa Police Service would like to remind residents to remove all valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle at all times. We have "All Valuables Removed" warning cards which are designed to remind vehicle owners they have an active part to play in preventing these crimes. The cards are displayed by vehicle owners on the inside of the driver's side window to display the message, "All Valuables Removed" - letting would-be-thieves know not to bother searching the vehicle and alerting others to take the same precautions. To obtain a warning card, contact the Community Police Centre at 613-236-1222 Ext. 2314.
