NEWS Starting a Neighbour-woods Group By Jane Keeler

Trees are amongst our most generous neighbours, providing shade and shelter, cooling, windbreaks, and even fruit. We need to protect our valuable old trees and add young ones. We face the loss of trees via construction/ development, emerald ash borer, as well as ice storms, wind, and other weather. Our urban canopy is under duress! The very active Champlain Park folks in Kitchissippi Ward recently produced an infographic detailing the number and types of trees in one 3-block area. They also calculated the financial benefits of these trees to the human residents. While that community has focused their attention on documenting the living trees and their value, their city councillor Jeff Leiper has announced a project to record the loss of trees in our city. Anyone who has lost a tree to storm or infill is invited to mark its location on the Google map at this https://urbanforestgreenspaces.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/ PHOTO BY BRENDAN MCCOY inventory-oct-2017.pdf site: https://t.co/GZ3Ev293zJ The University of New have shown that exposure to green between green surroundings and a Neighbour-woods group. BOOK REVIEW Haunt, Poetry by Susan McMaster, Black Moss Press, 2018

Poet Susan McMaster. PHOTO BY AVEN MCMASTER

By Mary Lee Bragg

Ottawa South writer Susan McMaster launched her tenth book of poetry, the aptly-titled Haunt, on May 5th. The first sunny day of spring saw friends, fans and family gather at the McMaster home on Belmont Avenue we are proud to introduce... for tea, coffee, snacks and impromptu readings. And of course, what would a book launch be without book sales? The launch party was a pleasant reminder of why we love this neighbourhood – the porch where arrivals stall and leavers linger, the dining table overlooking a bird feeder with red-winged blackbird, the fact that this many people take poetry seriously. McMaster’s poetry is indeed worth taking seriously. Her first book, Dark Galaxies, explored themes of love, family and a universe indifferent to upstairs in the OTLBC Clubhouse both. Her most recent book, Crossing Arcs: Alzheimer’s, my mother and me, chronicles and seeks meaning in a parent’s ordeal by dementia.
