We have assembled a spectacular collection of films highlighting a robust and very creative film industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The variety of movies as selected by our Australian-German jury is most amazing, ranging from thrillers, alpine Western, to comedies and thigh-slapping Kraut pleasers, to quirky drama queens. We are thrilled to present the very best of German filmmaking to you from art house films to massive European box office hits in eight Australian cities, including Hobart for the very first time. Make your voice heard and vote for your favourite film online. You might even win a fantastic prize! At the end of the festival we will award the most popular film the much sought after Golden Garden Gnome. We wish you a great cinema experience, lots of fun, and even food for thought during the festival and its special events. See you at the movies! Viel Vergnügen!

Meet 15-year-old Charleen. She’s an apprentice at a funeral parlour and is obsessed with dead rock stars. Things start to look up when she meets Linus, a geek from school also on Karl’s list of patients. Could this weirdo be the true friend she’s been looking for all this time? This highly entertaining and ultimately life-affirming tale captures adolescent angst with razor-sharp accuracy. Charleen’s transition from troubled outsider to a much happier state is played with a delicate combination of comedy and perfectly timed moments of poignant drama. Öllers and Niederländer are two highly paid consultants, touring the world’s dirtiest countries seeking to satisfy their clients’ hunger for profit. Reality exists merely as a dusty silhouette behind the windows of their air-conditioned luxury hotels. Their goal seems to be within their grasp: to ascend to their company’s top echelons and finally be made partners. Both are well aware that, according to their firm’s unwritten rules in the hierarchy, they’ll need to secure their final promotion by their mid-thirties or else they’ll be sidelined: ‘up or out’. But when their old rival Hellinger is given the sought-after promotion, they find themselves forced to come to terms with his successor, the ambitious young Bianca. Gradually, they begin to lose control and their nerves are on edge: why did Hellinger throw himself out of a window? Why is the company being sold? Who can they trust? And will the firm reshuffle the cards without them? JOHANNES NABER was born in Baden-Baden in 1971. Noa from Israel has been living in Berlin for eight years now. She is about to graduate from university and recently moved in with her German boyfriend Jörg. Although everything should be running smoothly, she suddenly experiences a personal crisis. That is why Noa decides to take a break and spontaneously flies back to her homeland. Sun, food, family, speaking her own language… it’s all doing her a lot of good. Suddenly Noa’s grandmother is hospitalized which is the perfect excuse to extend her stay, thus suppressing the problems which await her in Berlin. But everyday life hunts her down in Israel faster than she could ever have imagined. Old problems resurface and new ones appear. The intensity of pressure that she felt in Berlin comes to a boil, as her grandmother’s condition rapidly deteriorates. Ironically she feels just as misunderstood in her homeland as she already felt in Berlin. When Jörg shows up in Israel, Noa’s two carefully separated worlds collide. ESTER AMRAMI was born in Israel in 1979. She moved to Berlin in 2003 and began studying at the Konrad Wolf University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg in 2005. Two beautiful, aristocratic sisters meet a young man who is infatuated with both of them. The man is none other than the writer, playwright, philosopher and hothead Friedrich Schiller, whose career has just begun. Both sisters long for love, but only one, Charlotte, is free. Neither noble nor wealthy, Schiller is no match for Charlotte, whose mother wants her to find a suitable man. Yet in the wake of the social and political upheavals rocking France on the eve of the Revolution, new forms of cohabitation emerge. Tension mounts between the sisters, however, who have always loved each other dearly and shared all their secrets and desires. Though Schiller delicately tends to the needs and wishes of his two mistresses, the sisters’ own pact seems increasingly like an elusive dream… DOMINIK GRAF was born 1952 in Munich and studied at the University of Television & Film in Munich. Bernd is with his long-term boyfriend, Marc, a psychoanalyst. The plan is to enjoy a relaxing summer weekend in each other’s company. It’s not long before things start to deteriorate. It turns out Anna and Bernd were more than just friends many years ago. Marc starts playing mind games and brings up the memory of a tragic incident involving Anna. Marc also starts putting moves on Stefan. As the boozing and frank talk continues, the line between reality and fantasy blurs. Anna begins to question everything around her. Could this all be a dream, or a nightmare, and who is that strange woman she keeps seeing? Answers to these intriguing questions are played out in an atmosphere of mounting suspense. This impeccably performed and crisply written psychodrama keeps you guessing all the way. FLORIAN GOTTSCHICK was born in Frankfurt in 1981 and currently lives in Berlin. Jack is a 10-year-old whose life in a fatherless home has given him maturity beyond his years. He cooks dinner, looks after his little brother Manuel and fills most of the housekeeping gaps left by Sanna, his frequently absent and neglectful mother. Whatever semblance of stability Jack has known is suddenly shattered when he is placed in a state-run home. Following a tragic incident, Jack runs away with his brother Manuel and embarks on a dangerous and disturbing journey across Berlin. The little boy must draw on everything he knows about the adult world to survive on the streets and find his mother. Ivo Pietzcker gives an astonishing performance as this brave, scared, determined and amazingly resourceful boy. In the tradition of Antoine Doinel in The 400 Blows (1959) and the eponymous hero of Pixote (1981), Jack is a boy you’ll never forget. EDWARD BERGER was born in Wolfsburg in 1970 and studied Directing at New York University. He co-founded the production company ‘Hound Dog Films Inc.’ and has worked as both a writer and director. His works include Gomez—Heads or Tail (1998), Female2 seeks Happy End (1999), Willkommen im Club (TV, 2004), Windland (TV, 2007), Ein guter Sommer (TV, 2011), and Mutter muss weg (TV, 2012).

At a party one evening Lena Ferben, a middle-aged academic working in the field of gender theory, suddenly feels dizzy and disoriented. She doesn’t recognise anyone and has lost almost all her memories. Her husband Tore now faces the daunting task of helping Lena recover her memories and her identity. Slowly, snippets come back but this seems to do more harm than good. Lena’s solution is to construct an entirely new personality cobbled together from parts of her old diaries and other scraps of information. But this Lena is very different to the woman Tore married. When Lena meets handsome writer Roman, events start spinning out of control. This clever and gripping drama asks intriguing questions about identity. Who are we really? How much of our lives is a performance staged for the comfort — or discomfort — of others? JAN SCHOMBURG was born in Aachen in 1976. He studied at the Kassel Art Academy and the Academy of Media Arts Cologne before being awarded a scholarship to attend the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw. In 1970 brothers Reinhold and Günther Messner set out to climb Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth highest mountain. Only Reinhold returned. This account of the brothers’ assault of the Himalayan peak, regarded in Germany as a mountain of destiny, is filmed where it happened and offers some of the most breathtaking high-altitude visuals ever captured. Tracing risk-taking Reinhold and the more conservative Günther from childhood in a village in South Tyrol to their tragic attempt to scale Nanga Parbat, director Joseph Vilsmaier creates a compelling portrait of the human relationships and backstage machinations driving the dangerous mission. Made in the great tradition of the German mountain films, this is a thrilling real-life adventure. JOSEPH VILSMAIER was born in Munich in 1939. In 1961, he became a camera assistant at Bavaria Films and has been a director of photography since 1972. He made his directorial debut in 1988 with Autumn Milk (Herbstmilch), followed by Rama Dama (1990), Stalingrad (1992), Charlie & Louise (1993), (Schlafes Bruder, 1995), Comedian Harmonists (1997), Marlene (1999), and The Last Train (Der letzte Zug, 2006).

Sixteen-year-old misfit Alex is on a dangerous path. A high school drop-out and drug user, Alex is depressed and has committed acts of self-harm. In desperation her adoptive mother sends her on an internship at a horse farm on the starkly beautiful northernmost tip of Germany’s coastline. There she meets riding instructor Nina, a 30-ish lesbian taking a break from city life and her troubled long-term relationship. Also at the farm is Kathy, a rich girl who has brought her beautiful horse on vacation. Alex initially hates her new environment and dislikes Nina and Kathy. After her initial anger has subsided she slowly finds common ground and forms a close friendship with Kathy. But one weekend when Alex and Kathy are left alone on the farm things get out of control… The special connection between girls and horses is elegantly woven into this beautifully filmed and gently told coming-of-age story. MONIKA TREUT was born in Mönchengladbach in 1954 and studied literature and politics in Marburg, completing a PhD. She continues to work in academia as a visiting professor in the United States. Germany, 1968. Teenagers Martin and Ruby fall in love. Everything seems possible. Martin dreams of becoming a famous writer. Ruby sings like an angel. It can only be a matter of time before her beautiful voice carries her to stardom. But first they have to escape their provincial town and Ruby’s tyrannical, devoutly Catholic father. In desperation the lovebirds run away to Berlin. Their freedom is short-lived. For her sins Ruby is placed in a Catholic home run by the merciless Sisters of Mercy. Martin’s punishment is a stint in the infamous Freistatt House of Correction. Fast-forward to 1977. Martin is broken and angry, while Ruby sings, but only with the help of booze and pills. But at last they are reunited. What does the future hold? This passionate tale sharply contrasts the spirit of rebellion and optimism in the 1960s with sobering reality checks in the punk rock era. Largely filmed in monochrome, its observations of the human condition are timeless. CHRISTIAN FROSCH was born in 1966. He studied Photography in Vienna and was also a student at the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB) in Berlin. His works include Sisi auf Schloss Gödöllö (1996), Die totale Therapie (1997), K.AF.KA—Fragment (2002), and Weiße Lilien (2008).

Maria is 14 years old. Her family belongs to The Society of Saint Paul, a deeply conservative Catholic sect that no longer recognises the authority of Rome. Maria is due for confirmation soon. Her only desire is to become a saint and ascend to heaven. In 14 stages she completes the Stations of the Cross, just as Jesus did on his way to Golgotha (Calvary). Her righteous mother looks on solemnly. At school a boy named Christian tries to make friends with Maria. This cannot be. Nothing else exists for Maria other than fulfilling her destiny. This astonishing film about radical faith and unquestioning devotion contains only 14 shots. The camera moves just three times. It is the antithesis of modern commercial cinema. It also has genuine claims to being hailed as a masterpiece. A maddening, upsetting depiction of blind ideological allegiance, superbly shot in (mostly) static single takes, it resonates far beyond the parameters of the oddball sect it depicts. Once upon a time there was a young student seeking peace and quiet. He ventured deep into a snow-covered forest and took up lodgings in the basement of a very strange house. So begins a twisted fairytale in which nothing and no-one can be taken at face value. The unnamed student’s landlords are an odd, unnamed couple with an 8-year-old son named Klaus. Trouble is, Klaus is actually a 30-year-old simpleton who believes he’s going to be President of the United States one day. Compelled by bizarre forces to remain in the house, the student becomes Klaus’ home tutor. That’s only the beginning to this giddy mix of melodrama, psychodrama, sci-fi and black comedy. Take a walk on the cinematic wild side with this delightfully twisted fairytale. NIKIAS CHRYSSOS was born in Leimen, just outside Heidelberg, in 1978. Paul sets out on the long hike into the forest with his wife Anna and his colleague Willi. When they arrive at Otto’s cabin he is nowhere to be seen. Conrad Weitzmann is an unsuccessful writer living in a ramshackle house near the woods with his oddball family. When his mother died ten years ago Conrad began writing a screenplay entitled ‘The Olive Grove’. Five years ago he sent it to TV station producer Stuckradt Halmer but got no reply. It’s time for drastic action. Conrad and his father, Ephraim, kidnap Halmer. In exchange for his eventual freedom Halmer must help Conrad whip ‘The Olive Grove’ into a final draft that will surely guarantee it gets made. Nothing is that easy of course. Halmer is looking to escape, Ephraim has loaded his guns in case of trouble, and his hefty daughter Marianne has the hots for the hapless hostage. Suspense, psychodrama, romance and black comedy combine to winning effect in this decidedly offbeat examination of the creative process. ANDREAS ARNSTEDT was born in 1969 in Gera, Germany. Hotshot political journalist Fabian Groys always gets the scoop. Fabian is given great freedom by his editors and is on the verge of busting open a big story on the army’s treatment of injured veterans. The only blip on his radar is Nadja, an intern he has been ordered to shepherd around. The quick solution is to send Nadja on her own to investigate the case of a man who committed suicide by walking into the lion’s enclosure at the zoo. When Fabian’s army story goes cold, Nadja’s lion story hots up. There is much more to it than meets the eye, and there seems to be a sinister connection between events at the zoo and backstage machinations in the government and military. This pacey and punchy film poses intriguing questions about spin-doctoring, information- gathering and media manipulation. Regardless of what school we attended, we follow thought patterns that date back to the era of industrialization where what counted was forming people into well-functioning cogs in a production-line manufacture-driven society. Since then, learning contents may have changed, and the school is no longer a place of authoritarian drilling. Nonetheless, the fixation on normed standards determines lessons more than ever. ‘Performance’, the maxim of the competitive society, has become the inexorable measure of all things throughout the world. But the exclusive orientation towards technocratic learning goals and the accurate repetition of context-free information is the death of precisely that playful creativity which might help us, without fear of failure, to seek new solutions. Alphabet concludes a trilogy that also featured We feed the World and Let’s make Money; it reverts to the themes of both, concentrating them in its lense and magnifying them to the point of ignition. ERWIN WAGENHOFER was born in Austria in 1961. During the early 1980s he released several short films before concentrating on feature films. The story of Alexander ‘Sascha’ Anderson is one of the most intriguing to emerge from communist East Germany. In the 1980s Anderson was a prime mover in East Berlin’s radical underground art world. A charismatic and handsome musician, writer and designer, Anderson enjoyed rock star-like status amongst his peers. None knew Anderson was also an informer for the Stasi, East Germany’s feared and despised secret police. In this remarkable documentary Sacha Anderson willingly discusses his chequered past. Former friends and colleagues including visual artist Cornelia Schleime reflect on Anderson’s betrayal and undeniable contribution to East German art at the time. Imaginatively constructed with multiple screen imagery showing the fractured and highly subjective nature of searching for ‘the truth’, Anderson is a fascinating companion-piece to communist East Germany-themed dramas such as The Lives of Others. ANNEKATRIN HENDEL was born in 1964 in East Berlin. She studied design and worked as a costume and set designer before starting her own production company in 2004. Her filmZur Zeit verstorben was nominated for the German Television Award, several of her productions have been shown at the Berlinale.

35 Cows and a Kalashnikov is more like an entrancing visual essay than a traditional documentary. It presents a stunning look at three very different aspects of African life. In Southern Ethiopia we meet the Surma people, whose traditions of cattle herding, elaborate body art and fierce donga (stick-fighting) are now carried out with Kalashnikovs at the ready. In Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of the Congo, the Sapeur (Society for the Advancement of Elegant People) are out and about. Prepare to be charmed by these dandies whose dedication to fashion is truly a sight to behold. Finally we encounter professional wrestlers in Kinshasa, the heaven-and-hell capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For some competitors witchcraft holds the key to victory. For others including legendary albino champion Texas and female fighter Zena the Warrior, technique reigns supreme in the ring. Stunningly photographed, poetically edited and endlessly fascinating, this is Africa as you’ve never seen it before. The history and meaning of German cinema during the Weimar Republic (1918–1933) is told in this fascinating documentary. Siegfried Kracauer’s famous 1947 book ‘From Caligari to Hitler: A Psychological History of the German Film’ provides the starting point. The central thrust of Kracauer’s thesis was that popular Weimar-era cinema contained strong premonitions of the rise of Nazism. Documentary maker Rüdiger Suchsland intelligently explores and expands upon Kracauer’s themes. Featuring magnificently restored clips from newsreels, forgotten films and classics includingThe Cabinet of Dr Caligari, People on Sunday, Dr Mabuse, der Spieler and M, this is a compelling excursion into the cultural, social and political climate of what would eventually give rise to the darkest chapter in Germany’s history. It’s a must-see for movie lovers. RÜDIGER SUCHSLAND studied history, philosophy and political science. Primarily active as a journalist and critic for print, radio and the internet, he is also a speaker, instructor and author on film, theory, East Asia, Zeitgeist, and contemporary issues. The Villa of Tugendhat is a spectacular example of modern architecture and was built in Brno, Czech Republic in 1929. This documentary depicts the chequered history surrounding this building and its occupants, including the displacement and emigration of the Tugendhat family during World War II. The villa not only survived such a tumultuous period of history, it went on to become a dance school, a therapeutic centre and a school for disabled children in the communist post-war years. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. This documentary features interviews with family members, occupants of the house, and art historians, as well as photos and film footage. The most beautiful words are left to the ordinary Czechs with spinal injuries who lived there as children under Communism, and who simply revered its light, space and architecture as a background to their emerging lives — underscoring the film’s theme about the relationship between people and the hard and complex nature of brilliant things. Culture clash on the sandy tracks of Burkina Faso. Africa’s biggest cycling race, the Tour du Faso, is a ten stage challenge for European amateur adventurers and African local heroes. It’s a passionate race for making their dream come true. Yet the film does not focus on the question of who will win — instead, it pays particular attention to the value of the protagonists’ experiences. Since 1987 the annual race has retained its unique and very African character as a ‘flawed’ — but much more friendly — copy of the Tour de France, its European model. The race is held in average temperatures of 40ºC, the course includes dusty, challenging roads, the advertising ‘caravan’ consists of a single car and the cyclists camp overnight on the African savannah. Tour du Faso takes the audience back in time to pre-commercialised decades. By following the Tour du Faso, we will get to know more about cycling, Africa and the extraordinary fighting spirit of the underdogs who take part in it. Here it is still the taking part that counts… WILM HUYGEN obtained his master’s degree in theatre, film and TV studies, he went on to study directing at the Academy for Media Arts Cologne. His graduation documentary Der schwule Neger Nobi (2010) gained much attention.

In the last days of Apartheid in South Africa four photographers from The Star newspaper in Johannesburg risked their lives daily to document the country’s frequent and appalling outbreaks of violence. Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek, Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva were collectively known as the ‘Bang-Bang Club’. Today, only Marinovich and Silva are alive. Their candid testimony reveals how camaraderie, extreme bravery and sense of personal and professional duty results in the capturing of extraordinary and frequently disturbing moments in time. We also discover how violence and its aftermath claimed the lives of Carter and Oosterbroek. What happens to a society when it is the guinea pig of all the latest tech products? The old folks are sent into retirement homes for statistical reasons and the youth rebel by attempting to break the world record for the biggest milkshake. A quirky, fun yet critical film,Fiddlesticks brings a new perspective to a society blind to the importance of valuing objects even if it’s a little bit old. Fiddlesticks has a clever and creative narrative that provides commentary on contemporary consumerism and the near rabid demand for the ‘latest new tech’. Nine-year-old Lola lives on a houseboat called ‘The Pea’ with her mother Loretta. It’s been a year since her father left without a trace. Beneath her feisty exterior is a lonely girl living only for the day when he returns. Refusing to accept even the slightest change in her life until that moment, Lola’s life is thrown into a spin when her mother, Loretta, starts dating someone else. Even Lola has to admit he’s a nice guy but that doesn’t stop her attempting to ruin Loretta’s chance at happiness. Then there’s new classmate Rebin, a Kurd living illegally in Germany. Lola and Rebin slowly become friends but a family crisis means he can no longer attend school. This beautifully crafted tale captures the pain and joy of childhood with honesty, humour and a big heart. Though made as a ‘children’s film’, its approach to common family issues makes it wonderfully entertaining and highly rewarding for all age groups. THOMAS HEINEMANN was born in 1958. With a cast including August Diehl as Huck’s drunken father, Heike Makatsch as Aunt Polly, Jacky Ido as Jim and comic legend Henry Hübchen as slave-hunter Packard, this spirited take on the timeless tale is suitable for younger viewers and adults alike. Teaching isn’t what it used to be. Whatever happened to good old talk and chalk? Teaching is now ‘facilitating’ and subjects have become ‘learning areas’. In these days of accountability and transparency, parents expect ‘facilitators’ to score high marks in key performance indicators… or else! It is parent-teacher day today and there’s only one thing on the mind of the angry mob: Ms Müller Must Go! When the distraught educator flees the scene it seems like justice has been done. Hang on a minute— there’s been a misunderstanding and everyone should really be chanting out loud Ms Müller Must Stay! Can she? Will she? What will be the key result outcomes of all this? As their love deepens, Ernst and Röbi become contributors to ‘The Circle’ (‘Der Kreis’), a ground-breaking magazine for gay men established in 1951. ‘The Circle’ was headed by Karl Meier, an actor from the Cabaret Cornichon ensemble who edited under the pseudonym Rolf. Part documentary and part drama, The Circle features interviews with the real Ernst and Röbi — now in their 80s and still very much in love — and recreations of key chapters from their shared past.
