Brothers and sisters, Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade others; but we ourselves are well known to God, and I hope that we are also well known to your consciences. We are not commending ourselves to you again, but giving you an opportunity to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast in out- ward appearance and not in the heart. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of rec- onciliation; that is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops.

THE FORMAL BLAZON OF THE EPISCOPAL COAT OF ARMS OF ROBERT E. BARRON, S.T.D. D.D. K.H.S. TITULAR BISHOP OF MACRIANA IN MAURETANIA AUXILIARY TO THE METROPOLITAN OF LOS ANGELES PER PALE OR AND MURREY AN OPEN BOOK PROPER SURMOUNTED OF A CHI RHO OR AND ENFLAMED COUNTERCHANGED, ON A CHIEF WAVY AZURE A PAIR OF WINGS ELEVATED, DISPLAYED AND CONJOINED IN BASE OR CHARGED WITH A FLEUR-DE-LIS ARGENT AND FOR A MOTTO « NON NISI TE DOMINE » THE OFFICE OF AUXILIARY BISHOP The Office of Auxiliary, or Assistant, Bishop came into the Church around the sixth century. Before that time, only one bishop served within an ecclesial province as sole spiritual leader of that region. Those clerics who hold this dignity are properly entitled “Titular Bishops” whom the Holy See has simultaneously assigned to assist a local Ordinary in the exercise of his episcopal responsibilities. The term ‘Auxiliary’ refers to the supporting role that the titular bishop provides a residential bishop but in every way, auxiliaries embody the fullness of the episcopal dignity. Although the Church considers both Linus and Cletus to be the first auxiliary bishops, as Assistants to St. Peter in the See of Rome, the first mention of the actual term “auxiliary bishop” was made in a decree by Pope Leo X (1513‐1521) entitled de Cardinalibus Lateranses (sess. IX). In this decree, Leo confirms the need for clerics who enjoy the fullness of Holy Orders to assist the Cardinal‐Bishops of the Suburbicarian Sees of Ostia, Velletri‐Segni, Sabina‐Poggia‐ Mirteto, Albano, Palestrina, Porto‐Santo Rufina, and Frascati, all of which surround the Roman Diocese.

Biography of pope john paul ii pdf Continue John Paul II (1920-2005) CAROL JASEF VODYA, elected Pope on October 16, 1978, was born on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was the third of three children born to Karol Oytytya and Emilia Kakovsky, who died in 1929. His older brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932, and his father, Carol, a non-commissioned officer in the army, died in 1941. He was nine years old when he received his First Communion and eighteen years when he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. After graduating from high school in Vadowice, he enrolled at the University of Jagelon in Krakow in 1938. When the Nazi occupying forces closed the university in 1939, Karol worked (1940-1944) in a quarry and then at the Solvea chemical plant to earn a living and avoid deportation to Germany. Feeling called to the priesthood, he began his studies in 1942 at a secret large seminary in Krakow under the direction of Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapiehi. At the time, he was one of the organizers of the Rhapsodic Theatre, which was also underground. After the war, Carol continued his studies at the main seminary, recently reopened, and at the School of Theology at Jagelon University, before his priestly ordination in Krakow on November 1, 1946. Father Oytysha was then sent by Cardinal Sapieha to Rome, where he received his doctorate in theology (1948). He wrote his thesis on faith, as is understood in the works of St. John the Cross. As a student in Rome, he spent his holidays performing pastoral service with Polish expats in France, Belgium and Holland.

  • Martyred Romanian Bishops Fought Communist Regime
Martyred Romanian bishops fought communist regime The memory and witness of Romania’s martyred bishops are a reminder that Christians are called to stand firm against ideologies that seek to stifle and suppress their cultural and religious traditions, Pope Francis said. On the last leg of his visit to Romania, the pope June 2 celebrated a Divine Liturgy during which seven Eastern-rite Catholic bishops, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged by the communist regime in Romania, were beatified. “These pastors, martyrs for the faith, re-appropriated and handed down to the Romanian people a precious legacy that we can sum up in two words: freedom and mercy,” the pope said. According to the Vatican, an estimated 60,000 people filled Blaj’s Liberty Field, while some 20,000 people followed the liturgy on big screens set up in various squares around the city. For Eastern Catholics in Romania, the field – located on the grounds of Blaj’s Greek Catholic Theological Seminary – is both a symbol of national pride and sorrow. It was in Liberty Field where, during the 100th anniversary of the Romanian nationalist revolution that communist authorities formerly dissolved the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church. One of the newly beatified bishops, Bishop Ioan Suciu, the apostolic administrator of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, refused to appear at the event, which was perceived by his flock as a sign that they were called to remain steadfast in their faith and follow the path of persecution and martyrdom. Thirty years after the fall of communism, the sun shined brightly and solemn hymns echoed over the field that was once the site of the Eastern Catholic Church’s darkest period.

  • Gerard Mannion Is to Be Congratulated for This Splendid Collection on the Papacy of John Paul II
“Gerard Mannion is to be congratulated for this splendid collection on the papacy of John Paul II. Well-focused and insightful essays help us to understand his thoughts on philosophy, the papacy, women, the church, religious life, morality, collegiality, interreligious dialogue, and liberation theology. With authors representing a wide variety of perspectives, Mannion avoids the predictable ideological battles over the legacy of Pope John Paul; rather he captures the depth and complexity of this extraordinary figure by the balance, intelligence, and comprehensiveness of the volume. A well-planned and beautifully executed project!” —James F. Keenan, SJ Founders Professor in Theology Boston College Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts “Scenes of the charismatic John Paul II kissing the tarmac, praying with global religious leaders, addressing throngs of adoring young people, and finally dying linger in the world’s imagination. This book turns to another side of this outsized religious leader and examines his vision of the church and his theological positions. Each of these finely tuned essays show the greatness of this man by replacing the mythological account with the historical record. The straightforward, honest, expert, and yet accessible analyses situate John Paul II in his context and show both the triumphs and the ambiguities of his intellectual legacy. • Renaissance Receptions of Ovid's Tristia Dissertation
RENAISSANCE RECEPTIONS OF OVID’S TRISTIA DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Gabriel Fuchs, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Frank T. Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological.
