College Avenue Claremont, Calif. 91711 ABSTRACT The Liebre Mountains form a discrete unit of the Transverse Ranges of southern California. Geo graphically, the range is transitional to the San Gabriel Mountains, Inner Coast Ranges, Tehachapi Mountains, and Mojave Desert. A total of 1010 vascular plant taxa was recorded from the range, representing 104 families and 400 genera. The ratio of native vs. nonnative elements of the flora is 4:1, similar to that documented in other areas of cismontane southern California. The range is note worthy for the diversity of Quercus and oak-dominated vegetation. A total of 32 sensitive plant taxa (rare, threatened or endangered) was recorded from the range. LAKE FIRE INCIDENT UPDATE Date: 08/17/2020 Time: Evening Incident Information Line: (626) 574-5208 @Angeles_NF @AngelesNationalForest (323) 205-5263 @LACoFD_PIO @LACoFD Incident Media Line: (323) 347-4725 https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6953/ Current Situation: The Lake Fire is currently 19,026 acres with 38% containment and 4,570 structures remain threatened. Mandatory evacuations are in place. The fire is burning on the Angeles National Forest near Lake Hughes and moving northwest towards 100-year-old fuels consisting of Big Cone Douglas Fir, Oak and Gray pine. The Lake Fire remains over eight miles to the northeast of Interstate 5 and southtot of Highway 138. Firefighters are facing steep and rugged terrain, high temperatures, critically dry fuels and drought stressed trees. The Lake Fire started of unknown cause on August 12, 2020 and has burned for 6 days. There has been one reportable injury to date. The right flank of the fire, just west of Lake Hughes has held for several days. Some of the areas in denser vegetation require extensive mop up. The left flank in the area of Sawmill Mountain, Burnt Peak and Little Burnt Peak is presenting the most challenging fire behavior. Containment along Pine Mountain Road will continue to be threatened by spot fires. Crews will watch for fire whirls, or fire devils, a spinning vortex column of ascending hot air and gases rising from a fire. Tonight’s virtual public meeting was live streamed on the Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Department Facebook and Instagram pages. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions through Facebook about the fire. -

Degree awarded June 2013 ii © 2013 Nicholas Anthony Famoso iii THESIS ABSTRACT Nicholas Anthony Famoso Master of Science Department of Geological Sciences June 2013 Title: The Evolution of Occlusal Enamel Complexity in Middle Miocene to Recent Equids (Mammalia: Perissodactyla) of North America Four groups of equids, “Anchitheriinae,” Merychippine-grade Equinae, Hipparionini, and Equini, coexisted in the middle Miocene, and only the Equini remains after 16 million years of evolution and extinction. Each group is distinct in its occlusal enamel pattern. These patterns have been compared qualitatively but rarely quantitatively. The processes controlling the evolution of these occlusal patterns have not been thoroughly investigated with respect to phylogeny, tooth position, and climate through geologic time. I investigated two methods of quantitative analysis, Occlusal Enamel Index for shape and fractal dimensionality for complexity. -

Introduction and Evaluation Process Summary Inventoried Roadless Areas and Wilderness Evaluations For reader convenience, all wilderness evaluation documents are compiled here, including duplicate sections that are also found in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, Appendix D Inventoried Roadless Areas. Introduction and Evaluation Process Summary Inventoried Roadless Areas Proposed Wilderness by and Wilderness Evaluations Alternative Introduction and Evaluation Process Summary Roadless areas refer to substantially natural landscapes without constructed and maintained roads. Some improvements and past activities are acceptable within roadless areas. Inventoried roadless areas are identified in a set of maps contained in the Forest Service Roadless Area Conservation Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), Volume 2, November 2000. These areas may contain important environmental values that warrant protection and are, as a general rule, managed to preserve their roadless characteristics. In the past, roadless areas were evaluated as potential additions to the National Wilderness Preservation System. Roadless areas have maintained their ecological and social values, and are important both locally and nationally. Recognition of the values of roadless areas is increasing as our population continues to grow and demand for outdoor recreation and other uses of the Forests rises. These unroaded and undeveloped areas provide the Forests with opportunities for potential wilderness, as well as non-motorized recreation, commodities and amenities. The original Forest Plans evaluated Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) data from the mid- 1980s and recommended wilderness designation for some areas. Most areas were left in a roadless, non- motorized use status. This revision of Forest Plans analyzes a new and more complete land inventory of inventoried roadless areas as well as other areas identified by the public during scoping. -

Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT MAGUIRE, KAITLIN CLARE, M.S., June 2008, Geological Sciences Paleobiogeography of Miocene to Pliocene Equinae of North America: A Phylogenetic Biogeographic and Niche Modeling Approach (195 pp.) Director of Thesis: Alycia L. Stigall The biogeography and evolution of the subfamily Equinae is examined using two separate but related analyses, phylogenetic biogeography and ecological niche modeling. The evolution of Equinae is a classic example of an adaptive radiation during a time of environmental change. Both analyses employed here examine the biogeography of the equine species to interpret how environmental and historical variables led to the rise and fall of this clade. Results determine climate change is the primary factor driving the radiation of Equinae and geodispersal is the dominant mode of speciation between regions of North America. A case study in the Great Plains indicates distributional patterns are more patchy during the middle Miocene when speciation rates are high than in the late Miocene, when the clade is in decline. -

Hipparion macedonicum revisited: New data on evolution of hipparionine horses from the Late Miocene of Greece GEORGE D. KOUFOS Koufos, G.D. 2016. Hipparion macedonicum revisited: New data on evolution of hipparionine horses from the Late Miocene of Greece. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 61 (3): 519–536. The new expeditions to the Axios Valley (Macedonia, Greece) provided a new set of fossils from the various localities. Among the material collected from the Late Miocene hominoid bearing mammal locality Ravin de la Pluie (RPl) were some remains of Hipparion macedonicum, which was originally described from this locality. The most important is the skull and associated mandible, the first from the type locality. The new material is compared with the previously collected material of the taxon from the Vallesian and Turolian levels of Greece, as well as with corresponding material from Eurasia. The RPl skull is compared with the type skull of H. matthwei, a taxon, which several times has been re- ferred as synonym to H. macedonicum. The comparison indicated several differences which distinguish the two species. Hipparion macedonicum has a continuous stratigraphic range from the Vallesian to middle Turolian and it is possibly present in the late Turolian. The comparison of the chronologically different samples of H. macedonicum indicates that the Vallesian form of H. macedonicum has larger size, shorter narial opening, longer tooth rows, rich enamel plication, more elongated and narrow plis, more robust metapodials and less running legs than the Turolian form. Some of the mor- phological changes are related to the habitat, which was more closed, warmer and wetter in the Vallesian than Turolian. -
