Dokumentation Horst Mühleisen Die Fritsch-Krise im Frühjahr 1938. Neun Dokumente aus dem Nachlaß des Generalobersten I. Die Bedeutung der Dokumente Es gibt Skandale, die lange fortwirken und auch die Forschung immer noch be- schäftigen. Zu diesen gehört jener, der mit dem Namen des Generalfeldmarschalls Werner von Blomberg, des Reichskriegsministers und Oberbefehlshabers der Wehr- macht, sowie des Generalobersten Werner Freiherrn von Fritsch, des Oberbefehls- habers des Heeres, verbunden ist. Der Anlaß für Blombergs Entlassung am 4. Februar 1938 war seine Heirat mit einer Frau, deren Vorleben als kompromittiert galt. Fritsch aber war der Homose- xualität, des Vergehens nach § 175 Strafgesetzbuch, beschuldigt worden. Auch er erhielt am selben Tage, dem 4. Februar, seinen Abschied. Um die gegen Fritsch er- hobenen Vorwürfe aufzuklären, ermittelte sowohl die Geheime Staatspolizei als auch das Reichskriegsgericht. Dies waren die Tatsachen, die im Frühjahr 1938 indessen nur wenigen Perso- nen verlaßlich bekannt waren. Der Öffentlichkeit war mitgeteilt worden, die Ver- abschiedung von Blomberg und Fritsch sei aus gesundheitlichen Gründen erfolgt. Wenige Jahre nach Kriegsende, 1949, veröffentlichte Johann Adolf Graf Kiel- mansegg, Fritschs Neffe, eine Darstellung über den Prozeß des Reichskriegsge- richts gegen den Generalobersten1. Die persönlichen Zeugnisse, die der ehemali- ge Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres hinterlassen hat, waren indessen spärlich, da Fritsch keine umfangreiche Korrespondenz führte. Ferner standen Kielmansegg die Prozeßakten nicht zur Verfügung, da sie verbrannt waren. Fotokopien der Ak- ten und Verhandlungsstenogramme, die in nicht sehr zahlreicher Ausfertigung vorlagen, ebenso wie die Handakten des Verteidigers, des Grafen Rüdiger von der Goltz, wurden durch Bombenangriffe vernichtet2. Ob die Protokolle, die Reichs- kriegsgerichtsrat Dr. Karl Sack während des Prozesses führte, tatsächlich nach Kriegsende in die Hände der amerikanischen Besatzungsmacht gefallen sind3, ist ungewiß; bis heute sind sie nicht wieder aufgetaucht. -

In the emerging international system since September 2001 issues of the State, protection of the suppressed, possible humanitarian intervention, and readiness to redraw external boundaries have given way to immediate concerns of security, terrorism, international terror networks and problems of economic security. Arguably, the world has entered a much more uncertain, unpredictable and indeed insecure period than during the cold war with its mutual assured destruction and super power hegemony. Besides the fear of terror attacks and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, recent secession crises have also shed light on the influence of organized crime in the realm of activists for self- determination, thus providing incentive for central authorities to embark on more re- strictive – some would say repressive – policies against activists for independence. While the independence of East Timor was the high point of the search for sovereignty and independence in recent times, sovereignty issues in Kosova, Chechnya, and Kashmir remain unresolved to this day. -

What caused WWII? Objectives: Explain how the causes of WWII led to the start of the conflict. Introduction Directions: Read through the scenario below and answer the questions that follow. On the first day of school, all the students signed a classroom contract promising to respect one another and resolve conflicts without fighting. If fighting occurs, the contract stated that the principal would call the family for a conference and there would be further consequences. Greg is a 10th grader who is still mad about last year because he felt like he was always blamed for starting problems and, as a result, he wasn’t allowed to attend any of the school field trips or go to school dances. Greg didn’t want to sign the contract, but he did anyway. In the second month of school, Greg got into a fight with Jeremiah, Jacob and Craig. Jeremiah, Jacob and Craig ended up with bloody noses. After the fight, the principal did not call Greg’s parents and there were no additional consequences. Two weeks later, Greg got into a fight with Calvin, and Greg broke Calvin’s arm. Again, after the fight, the principal did not call Greg’s parents and there were no additional consequences. Only a week later, Greg got into a fight with Justin and Michael in the lunchroom leading to a large brawl involving half the school. After the lunchroom brawl, the principal threatened to call home and Greg laughed in her face. Two days later, Greg started a fight in front of the school and a window was broken that cost the school thousands of dollars to replace. -

The Franco-Prussian War: Its Impact on France and Germany, 1870-1914 Emily Murray Professor Goldberg History Honors Thesis April 11, 2016 1 Historian Niall Ferguson introduced his seminal work on the twentieth century by posing the question “Megalomaniacs may order men to invade Russia, but why do the men obey?”1 He then sought to answer this question over the course of the text. Unfortunately, his analysis focused on too late a period. In reality, the cultural and political conditions that fostered unparalleled levels of bloodshed in the twentieth century began before 1900. The 1870 Franco- Prussian War and the years that surrounded it were the more pertinent catalyst. This event initiated the environment and experiences that catapulted Europe into the previously unimaginable events of the twentieth century. Individuals obey orders, despite the dictates of reason or personal well-being, because personal experiences unite them into a group of unconscious or emotionally motivated actors. The Franco-Prussian War is an example of how places, events, and sentiments can create a unique sense of collective identity that drives seemingly irrational behavior. It happened in both France and Germany. These identities would become the cultural and political foundations that changed the world in the tumultuous twentieth century. The political and cultural development of Europe is complex and highly interconnected, making helpful insights into specific events difficult. It is hard to distinguish where one era of history begins or ends. It is a challenge to separate the inherently complicated systems of national and ethnic identities defined by blood, borders, and collective experience. -

Hi.storians supporting President Roosevelt's 1 position tend to blame Japan s imperialism and expansionism as one of the main causes of the war. Revisionist historians like Charles Beard, Harry Elmer Barnes, and Charles Tansill, place the responsibility for Japan's declaration of war and surprise attack on the intransigent approach of the Roosevelt administration. To place the full burden of responsibility for the failure of negotiations on either Japan or the United States is to over--simplify the complex events of 1941. -
