Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China), is an established Chinese internaꢀonal arꢀst who grew up in an arꢀsꢀc family in Macau. In a fascinaꢀng way, the works of Canal Cheong Jagerroos combines the past and present, East and West. For the past 30 years, Cheong Jagerroos has lived and worked in numerous countries, from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experiences of culturally diverse places have influenced her arꢀsꢀc work both consciously and subconsciously.
Currently Canal Cheong Jagerroos lives and works in Helsinki and Shanghai

‘Floaꢀng Island’ is an enꢀrely new spiritual space created by Cheong Jagerroos. Apart from the newest painꢀngs and installaꢀons, it also includes the materials of her years of creaꢀve
work. The installaꢀon of the pieces is full, bold, directly dissecꢀng into the context of the
arꢀst’s creaꢀve process, and puꢁng on display her process of thought and emoꢀon. In a liberated, immersive and interacꢀve manner, using different lights and mirrors to expand tacꢀle sensiꢀviꢀes and imaginaꢀve spaces, the exhibiꢀon enables people to walk into the arꢀst creaꢀvity, to enter the realm of Floaꢀng Island.
Floaꢀng Island Overview
One of the main themes of ‘Floaꢀng Island’ is about the integraꢀon of Eastern and Western culture within the installaꢀon, combining the two elements in both chaoꢀc and harmonic inspiring way. By doing this, it is shown that these different ideas (ways of life) ̶
‘Floaꢀng Island’, so to speak ̶ can coexist and flourish together. Another point Cheong
Jagerroos is focusing on is the fact that we can find beauty not only in construcꢀon but within deconstrucꢀon as well. This is something she has discovered while walking the fine line between the east and west.

Reconstrucꢀon and Deconstrucꢀon
Canal is connecꢀng the educaꢀonal theme of Floaꢀng Island that can be taken from the installaꢀon exhibiꢀon is “reconstrucꢀon and deconstrucꢀon.” Making her works is a process filled with building and tearing apart unꢀl she is leſt with the final product. People see destrucꢀon as something negaꢀve, but they someꢀmes forget that the empty space that it leaves behind is an opportunity to fill it with something even beꢂer. This philosophy can be applied nearly any-where in life, whether it is something physical or psychological.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos is well aware of the context of both Eastern and Western art, and through her art, engages in a unique dialogue between different cultures.

In the past 30 years, by living and working all over Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Africa, Finland, and a number of other countries and areas, Canal has naturally come across many cultures, all these different ways of life have in their own way become a piece of her. All these experiences have moulded her to who she is, and this is reflected in her artwork. This is also where the floaꢀng island’s names arises from as she imagines herself weaving through the world like a floaꢀng island.
In her works, Cheong Jagerroos rebuilds the language, signs and symbols of tradiꢀonal Chinese art. The arꢀst gives birth to a colourful, vibrant and layered form by painꢀng mulꢀple layers of colour, mixing different materials and work to ensure that material does not limit her creaꢀvity. Intensive painꢀng sessions lead to works where Canal Cheong Jagerroos embrace posiꢀve energy, peace and harmony. Emoꢀonal, colourful expression and the dismantling of confrontaꢀons and differences creates a peaceful and beauꢀful utopia.

Using contemporary elements, she deconstructs signs and symbols, breaking down the language barrier between the abstract and the concrete. Her pieces simultaneously contain the strength of the East and the Western. This shows the arꢀst’s aꢁtude of freedom and individuality, amidst a variety of tensions, her own liberaꢀon and cosmopolitan spirit is highlighted.

Floaꢀng Island’s charm lies in its hopes for reconstrucꢀon and peace, interacꢀon and fusion, in its search for understanding between cultures, and osmosis and expansion between them, to preserve the spiritual space of exist-
ence, and to gain the power of feelings, thereby conꢀnuing the energy of human civilizaꢀon.
