Islands on fire! Islands like torches! Islands on victory parade! By Edith Södergran Canal Cheong Jagerroos 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968, China), is an established Chinese international artist who grew up in an artistic family in Macau. In a fascinating way, the works of Canal Cheong Jagerroos combines the past and present, East and West. For the past 30 years, Cheong Jagerroos has lived and worked in numerous countries, from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experiences of culturally diverse places have influenced her artistic work both consciously and subconsciously. Currently Canal Cheong Jagerroos lives and works in Helsinki and Shanghai Canal Cheong Jagerroos ‘Floating Island - Beyond Arctic’ at Rovaniemi Art Museum, Finland . Installation size 350 cm x 150 cm x 400 cm , calligraphy and mixed media on textile, LED light Exhibition: 24.1.2020 - 31.5.2020 ‘Floating Island’ is an entirely new spiritual space created by Cheong Jagerroos. Apart from the newest paintings and installations, it also includes the materials of her years of creative work. The installation of the pieces is full, bold, directly dissecting into the context of the artist’s creative process, and putting on display her process of thought and emotion. In a liberated, immersive and interactive manner, using different lights and mirrors to expand tactile sensitivities and imaginative spaces, the exhibition enables people to walk into the artist creativity, to enter the realm of Floating Island. Floating Island Overview One of the main themes of ‘Floating Island’ is about the integration of Eastern and West- ern culture within the installation, combining the two elements in both chaotic and har- monic inspiring way. By doing this, it is shown that these different ideas (ways of life) ̶ ‘Floating Island’, so to speak ̶ can coexist and flourish together. Another point Cheong Jagerroos is focusing on is the fact that we can find beauty not only in construction but within deconstruction as well. This is something she has discovered while walking the fine line between the east and west. Reconstruction and Deconstruction Canal is connecting the educational theme of Floating Island that can be taken from the in- stallation exhibition is“ reconstruction and deconstruction.” Making her works is a process filled with building and tearing apart until she is left with the final product. People see de- struction as something negative, but they sometimes forget that the empty space that it leaves behind is an opportunity to fill it with something even better. This philosophy can be applied nearly any-where in life, whether it is something physical or psychological. Canal Cheong Jagerroos is well aware of the context of both Eastern and Western art, and through her art, engages in a unique dialogue between different cultures. ‘Floating Island - Cinderella In Pink’ at Salo Art Museum in Finland 29.9.2018 - 13.1.2019 Exhibition installation view ‘Floating Island- Curious Beholders’ at Salo Art Museum in Finland 29.9.2018 - 13.1.2019 Exhibition installation view, materials included about 1000 pcs small paintings hanging from ceiling to floor Floating Island Materials included, about 1000 pcs small paintings connected by fishing string, mixed media calligra- phy on large textile, paintings with mixed media on canvas, led light Canal Cheong Jagerroos, Floating Island, Curious Beholders, 250 x 120 cm / 3 pcs , mixed media on canvas, 2017 In the past 30 years, by living and working all over Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Africa, Finland, and a number of other countries and areas, Canal has naturally come across many cultures, all these different ways of life have in their own way become a piece of her. All these experiences have moulded her to who she is, and this is reflected in her artwork. This is also where the floating island’s names arises from as she imagines herself weaving through the world like a floating island. In her works, Cheong Jagerroos rebuilds the language, signs and symbols of traditional Chi- nese art. The artist gives birth to a colourful, vibrant and layered form by painting multiple layers of colour, mixing different materials and work to ensure that material does not limit her creativity. Intensive painting sessions lead to works where Canal Cheong Jagerroos em- brace positive energy, peace and harmony. Emotional, colourful expression and the dis- mantling of confrontations and differences creates a peaceful and beautiful utopia. Her pieces simultaneously con- tain the strength of the East and the Western. This shows the artist’s attitude of freedom and individuality, amidst a variety of tensions, her own liberation and cosmopolitan spirit is highlighted. Floating island preparation, Canal’s studio in Shanghai 2020 Floating Island’s charm lies in its hopes for reconstruction and peace, interaction and fusion, in its search for un- derstanding between cultures, and osmosis and expansion between them, to preserve the spiritual space of exist- ence, and to gain the power of feelings, thereby continuing the energy of human civilization.
