MULTICULTURALISM AND ALIENATION IN CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE SOCIETY AS SEEN IN THE FILMS OF TAKASHI MIIKE Steven A. Balsomico A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Ronald E. Shields, Advisor Walter Grunden ii ABSTRACT Ronald E. Shields, Advisor Through his films, Takashi Miike reminds audiences of the diverse populations within Japan. He criticizes elements of the Japanese sociological structures that alienate minorities and outcasts. Through the socialization process, Japanese youth learn the importance of “fitting in” and attending to the needs of the group. Clear distinctions of who are “inside” and “outside” are made early on and that which is “outside” is characterized as outcast and forbidden. In three of his films, "Blues Harp," "Dead or Alive," and "Deadly Outlaw: Rekka," Miike includes individuals who have been situated as outsiders. In "Blues Harp," Chuji, due to his obvious heritage, cannot find a place in society, and thus exists on the fringes. In "Dead or Alive," Ryuichi has felt that the country in which he lives has placed him in a disadvantaged status: therefore, he must strike out on his own, attempting to achieve happiness through criminal means. In "Deadly Outlaw: Rekka," Kunisada, an outsider by blood and incarceration, cannot relate to his peers in the world. As a result, he lashes out against the world in violence, becoming an individual who is portrayed as a wild beast. When these outsiders attempt to form their own groups, they often face eventual failure.

Stories of antiquated and haunted spaces, specters of the past that take take the form of some sort of ghost or monster, and / or a conflict be- tween modern rationalism and belief in the supernatural are plentiful in the the realm of folk tales and both high and low literature. Though the Japanese Gothic's specific connections to religion and cultural norms may differ from their English-language counterparts, many of the themes, themes, story arcs, and character types are similar. One recurring Gothic Gothic motif in Japanese literature and film is the femme fatale - usu- ally ally a sexually alluring woman who leads men to their deaths, and whose existence serves as a grim reminder of what happens to those who stray from Buddhist principles of asceticism. In In Takashi Miike's 1999 film Odishon (Audition), we see a version of the the Gothic femme fatale who embodies the contradictions of both the Gothic itself and Japan's long history of depicting vengeful female char- acters acters who represent both an idealized version of femininity and a threat threat to the social order.

  • Takeshi Kitano Vol
UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD KITANO TAKESHI: AUTHORSHIP1 GENRE & STARDOM IN JAPANESE CINEMA PHD THESIS ADAM R BINGHAM 2009 VOL II 213 The Return of the Kids! A Scene at the Sea [1991], Kids Return [1996] & Dolls [2002] It is possible to sub-divide and compartmentally categorise the oeuvre of Kitano Takeshi in several distinct and mutually compatible ways. Thus far, the tendency in the critical discourse on his work has been, rather too readily and too easily, to focus on those aspects of his films deemed salient authorial determinants - such as the violence and tenderness - and apply this to the body of work as a whole. Thus, for better or for worse, one repeatedly finds in reviews of films such as Ana natsu, ichiban shizukana umi ... (A Scene at the Sea, 1991) and Kikujiro no natsu (Kikujiro, 1999) a focus on their lack of the violent material found in other, better known Kitano films. Similarly, a number of reviews and essays about Hana-Bi [1997] concentrated on its perceived Zen qualities, and in the US this quality of quietude and mono no aware was then read into other works that were released in the wake of 1997, even San tai yon, ekkusu ...jugatsu (Boiling Point, 1990). It is, of course, the central tenet of film authorship to evaluate one of a perceived auteur's films against the oeuvre in general. However, as the aforementioned example of Hana-Bi can amply attest, it is nonetheless the case that the common critical conceptions of Kitano Takeshi or even 'Beat' Takeshi that have gained consensus opinion have often been lazily employed, rehashed and repeated.
