It defines the qualities of the hypertext narrative and looks specifically at how hyperfiction has utilized these qualities. It outlines the aspects of hypertext relevant to shaping an online narrative and then considers how those aspects of hypertext could be applied to one of the forms of narrative, the online news story, that up to this point has not effectively utilized screen-based text. The online news story is an example of words on a screen functioning in much the same way they have for hundreds of years on the newspaper page. This thesis focuses specifically on the application of hypertext theory to online newspaper because of the precarious place in which that media finds itself as it works to adapt to the age of the Internet. Yet even with the use of links and multimedia, online newspaper stories have not seen the type of drastically different presentation of narratives created by hyperfiction. The usefulness of considering what hyperfiction has to teach the online newspaper becomes even more apparent in light of the necessity for change within the industry (Cho, Martin, and Lacy). iv TABLE DEFINING HYPERTEXT AND ITS USES The concept of hypertext is not limited to, but is most commonly associated with, the Internet. In fact, the linking structure of hypertext which is described as a system of text-based nodes, is the foundation upon which the Internet is based. Yet the pervasiveness of the Internet in everyday activity makes this structure of links appear unremarkable. If, for example, a reader encountered this thesis on a computer screen that reader would not be surprised to see a section of blue underlined text. That reader would know to click the text in order to follow a link. If another reader were holding the print version of this thesis and saw the same words underlined and in blue ink, it would be ridiculous to assume that that reader could touch the printed page and be transported to some other segment, an endnote perhaps. There is an expectation that screen-based text will function outside of the parameters of print-based text. There is not, however, any quality about screen-based text that forces this to be true. Words on a screen can function in the same way that printed words on a page have for more than half a millennium. A work of John Steinbeck’s is essentially the same whether published by the Viking Press or viewed on Amazon’s Kindle. The Grapes of Wrath is the same content in either form, but not exactly the same experience for the reader. This difference is where the structure of hypertext, the hyperlinks with which it is most readily associated, are shown not to be all the ways in which a “text” becomes “hyper.” The minor ways in which screen-based 1 text differ from print-based text add up to a set of characteristics that when used purposefully do create a new novel, and a new form of narrative. Edwards University of Michigan, Winter 2008 Monday, 1-4 PM, 311 West Hall Systems, Networks, and Webs: History and Theory of Infrastructure This course offers historical, comparative, and theoretical perspectives on the evolution of major infrastructures from the 19th century to the present. We will focus especially on information infrastructures: the Internet, the World Wide Web, and scientific cyberinfrastructures. To set the stage, we will compare their historical trajectories with those of older transportation, electric power, and communication infrastructures. For example, transportation infrastructures face their most difficult challenges at the interface between different transport modes, as in ports (where shipping connects with trucking and rail) and airports (where air transit connects with automobile, truck, bus, subway, train, and pedestrian modes). These intermodal problems in transport networks find significant parallels in information infrastructures. For example, data conversion (from analog to digital, or from one digital format to another) creates difficult problems for system designers and users; connecting networks built on different standards motivated early Internet research. The course looks at how infrastructures form, how they change, and how they shape (and are shaped by) social systems. A major focus will be the role of standards (e.g. railroad track gauge, alternating current voltages, TCP/IP, HTTP, HTML) and standard-setting bodies in creating “ground rules” for infrastructure development. Concepts such as “technological momentum” (the tendency of large technical systems to become increasingly resistant to change), “load factor” (maximizing the use of available system capacity), and "interdependence" (among components and between connected infrastructures) will be explored.

Typically these histories portray the Internet as a revolutionary development of the late 20th century—perhaps with distant roots that date back to the early 1960s. In one sense this is an apt characterization. The Internet is absolutely a creation of the computer age. But we should not think of the Internet just as a revolutionary development. It is also an evolutionary development in the dissemination of information. In that sense the Internet is simply the latest chapter of a history that can be traced back to the Library of Alexandria or the printing press of William Caxton. In this lecture I will not be going back to the Library of Alexandria or the printing press of William Caxton. Instead I will focus on the contributions of three individuals who envisioned something very like the Internet and the World Wide Web, long before the Internet became a technical possibility. These three individuals each set an agenda. They put forward a vision of what the dissemination of information might become, when the world had developed the technology and was willing to pay for it. Since the World Wide Web became established in 1991 thousands of inventers and entrepreneurs have changed the way in which many of us conduct our daily lives.

Title: The Identification and Division of Steve Jobs Abstract approved: Mark P. Moore On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak entered into a partnership agreement to found Apple Computer. In the decade that followed, Apple experienced remarkable growth and success, as Jobs catapulted Apple to the Fortune 500 list of top‐flight companies faster than any other company in history. Under direction of Jobs, Apple, an idea that started in a garage, transformed into a major force in the computer industry of the 1980s. Though Jobs’ leadership undoubtedly influenced Apple’s success during this time, in 1995, he was forced to resign, when conflicts mounted at the executive level. Using Kenneth Burke’s theory of identification and the dramatistic process, this thesis examines Jobs’ discourse through a series of interviews and textual artifacts. First, I provide a framework for Jobs’ acceptance and rejection of the social order at Apple, and then consider the ways in which Jobs identified with employee and consumer audiences on the basis of division. Analysis shows that Jobs identified with individual empowerment, but valued separation and exclusivity. Jobs’ preference to create identification through division, therefore, established the foundation for new identifications to emerge. Their main product lines are the iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh computer. The company was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak and was created in 1977 in Cupertino, California. Apple Inc. is one of the world’s largest and most successful companies, recently being the first US company to hit a $1 trillion value. They shaped the way computers operate and look today, and, without them, numerous computer products that we know and love today would not exist. Although Apple is an extremely successful company today, they definitely did not start off this way. They have a long and complicated history, leading up to where they are now. Steve Jobs was one of the co-founders of Apple Inc. and one of first developers of the personal computer era. He was the CEO of Apple, and is what most people think of when they think ”the Apple founder”. Besides this, however, Steve Jobs was also later the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar, and a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors after Pixar was bought out, and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT. Jobs was born on February 24th, 1955 in San Francisco, California. He was raised by adoptive parents in Cupertino, California, located in what is now known as the Silicon Valley, and where the Apple headquarters is still located today.
