    Places to See and Visit When first prepared in 1995 I had prepared these notes for our cottages one mile down the road near Biggin Dale with the intention of providing information regarding local walks and cycle rides but has now expanded into advising as to my personal view of places to observe or visit, most of the places mentioned being within a 25 minutes drive. Just up the road is Heathcote Mere, at which it is well worth stopping briefly as you drive past. Turn right as you come out of the cottage, right up the steep hill, go past the Youth Hostel and it is at the cross-road. In summer people often stop to have picnics here and it is quite colourful in the months of June and July This Mere has existed since at least 1462. For many of the years since 1995, there have been pairs of coots living in the mere's vicinity. If you turn right at the cross roads and Mere, you are heading to Biggin, but after only a few hundred yards where the roads is at its lowest point you pass the entrance gate to the NT nature reserve known as Biggin Dale. On the picture of this dale you will see Cotterill Farm where we lived for 22 years until 2016. The walk through this dale, which is a nature reserve, heads after a 25/30 minute walk to the River Dove (There is also a right turn after 10 minutes to proceed along a bridleway initially – past a wonderful hipped roofed barn, i.e with a roof vaguely pyramid shaped - and then the quietest possible county lane back to Hartington).

    RAILWAY ENTHUSIASTS 2017 January 2017: ST. PANCRAS STATION January's meeting was back at the Richard Herrod, where our subject was the history and refurbishment of St Pancras Station. Several members contributed material and a wide range of themes were covered, including the source of the bricks for the Midland Grand Hotel (Thomas Gripper of Nottingham, with clay sourced from near Loughborough), the novel and unique design of Barlow’s engine shed which allowed for the warehousing of vast quantities of Burton Ale below the floor, the vast Somerstown goods depot which once stood alongside the station and dealt with coal, milk and perishable goods from the East Midlands (the site now occupied by the British Library and the Crick Institute). We heard about the flamboyant Neo-Gothic design of the Midland Grand Hotel by George Gilbert Scott, and the luxury that it afforded its original clientele, its later decline and threat of demolition and its renewal as the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in parallel with the restoration of the station as the Eurostar terminus. We learnt that Graeme and Susan Bunting were about to spend a few days at the Renaissance Hotel! – some of their photos are shown below. The entrance to the hotel The Grand Staircase The staircase was used in the filming of the Spice Girls video for Wannabe in 1996 and is topped off by a spectacular ceiling A lavishly decorated side corridor leads towards the Ladies Smoking Room ……… …… and a terrace with a good view of the clock tower The original taxi rank where Victorian horse and cart Hansom Carriages dropped wealthy passengers at the station is now the Hansom Lounge and reception area The former Booking Office is now a restaurant In January 2017 the renovated Barlow train shed had a temporary exhibit - a giant, twisted, rotating blade of aluminium to “welcome visitors and perhaps even calm them down”.

In 2013, Derbyshire Record Office secured £84,600 of HLF funding for a two year project to support Derbyshire communities to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The project funding principally covers the salary of a Project Officer, who came into post in March 2014. Over the past year, Derbyshire Lives has been: • Helping groups to develop projects that reflect the role played by Derbyshire communities during the First World War. • Encouraging groups to produce resources such as guides, web pages and education packs to explain Derbyshire’s First World War heritage and to engage a variety of audiences, including Derbyshire schools. • Working with Libraries & Heritage staff to promote the use of the Record Office, libraries, Buxton Museum & Art Gallery and the Arts Team as both a resource and as venues for community projects and activities. • Developing lasting skills within communities to enable them to successfully bid for funding and deliver heritage projects. 2.2 Derbyshire’s involvement with the First World War was significant. For example the Derwent Valley Mills produced underwear for the troops and camouflage netting; lead was supplied for the production of ammunition; stoneware jars for the supply of rum rations; stone from Middleton quarries was used for over 120,000 headstones by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
