Current Research in Environmental & Applied Mycology 4 (1): 117–124, Doi 10.5943/cream/4/1/10 Abstract Field surveys and collection of the basidiocarps of wood-rotting fungi were carried out in eight forest stands of East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India. Seventy eight wood-rotting fungi belonging to 23 families were identified. The undisturbed Mawphlang sacred grove was found to harbour a much larger number of the wood-rotting fungi (33.54 %) as compared to the other forest stands studied. Similarly, logs also harboured the maximum number of wood-rotting fungi (59.7 %) while living trees harboured the least (7.8%). Microporus xanthopus had the highest frequency percentage of occurrence with 87.5 %, followed by Cyclomyces tabacinus, Microporus affinis and Trametes versicolor with 62.5 %. Majority of the wood-rotting fungi are white-rot fungi (89.61%) and only few are brown-rots. -

We also evaluated the transition in hymenophore morphology between Lentinus, Neofavolus and related polypores with ancestral state reconstruction. -

Current Research in Environmental & Applied Mycology (Journal of Fungal Biology) 7(1), 1–7, Doi 10.5943/cream/7/1/1 Abstract Wood-rotting fungi were collected from two forest stands - a disturbed (Lower Kitsubozou) and an undisturbed forest stand (Mount Puliebadze) of Kohima, Nagaland in India. A survey and collection of wood-rotting fungi were done during the months of October and November, 2013 (Autumn); January and February, 2014 (Winter); March and April, 2014 (Spring). A total of 32 species belonging to 18 families were identified based on the macro and micro morphology of the fruiting bodies. Three species belong to phylum Ascomycota and 29 species belong to phylum Basidiomycota. More wood-rotting fungi were collected from the undisturbed forest stand, Puliebadze than from the disturbed forest stand, Lower Kitsubozou. Of the total species of wood- rotting fungi collected, 68.96% species occurred on logs, 17.24% on tree stumps, 15.51% on twigs and 12.06% on living trees. -

Th e number of mushrooms on Earth is estimated at 140 000, yet perhaps only 10 % (approximately 14 000 named species) are known. Th ey make up a vast and yet largely untapped source of powerful new pharmaceutical products. Particularly, and most important for modern medicine, they present an unlimited source for polysaccharides with anticancer and immunostimulating properties. Many, if not all Basidiomycetes mushrooms contain biologically active polysaccharides in fruit bodies, cultured mycelia, and culture broth. Th e data about mushroom polysaccharides are summarized for 651 species and seven intraspecifi c taxa from 182 genera of higher Hetero- and Homobasidiomycetes. Th ese polysaccharides are of diff erent chemical composition; the main ones comprise the group of β-glucans. β-(1→3) linkages in the main chain of the glucan and further β-(1→ 6) branch points are needed for their antitumor action. Numerous bioactive polysaccharides or polysaccharide- protein complexes from medicinal mushrooms are described that appear to enhance innate and cell-mediated immune responses, and exhibit antitumour activities in animals and humans. Stimulation of host immune defense systems by bioactive polymers from medicinal mushrooms has signifi cant eff ects on the maturation, diff erentiation, and proliferation of many kinds of immune cells in the host. -

Aurificaria indica var. leucocephala var. nov, and Microporus affinis var. glabriceps var. nov. are described and four species, Fomitopsis cupreorosea, Ganoderma curtisii, Microporus alboater and Phellinus shaferi are new reports for India. YUSOFF MUSA ABSTRACT Macrofungi of the order Polyporales are among the most important wood decomposers and caused economic losses by decaying the wood in standing trees, logs and in sawn timber. Diversity and distribution of Polyporales in Peninsular Malaysia was investigated by collecting basidiocarps from trunks, branches, exposed roots and soil from six states (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang and Selangor) in Peninsular Malaysia and Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur. This study showed that the diversity of Polyporales were less diverse than previously reported. The study identified 60 species from five families; Fomitopsidaceae, Ganodermataceae, Meruliaceae, Meripilaceae, and Polyporaceae. The common species of Polyporales collected were Fomitopsis feei, Amauroderma subrugosum, Ganoderma australe, Earliella scabrosa, Lentinus squarrosulus, Microporus xanthopus, Pycnoporus sanguineus and Trametes menziesii. IN BIOPULPING OF EMPTY FRUIT BUNCHES OF ELAEIS GUINEENSIS MOHAMAD HASNUL BIN BOLHASSAN THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY FACULTY OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR 2012 ABSTRACT Diversity and distribution of Polyporales in Malaysia was investigated by collecting basidiocarps from trunks, branches, exposed roots and soil from six states (Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang and Selangor) in Peninsular Malaysia and Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur. The morphological study of 99 basidiomata collected from 2006 till 2007 and 241 herbarium specimens collected from 2003 - 2005 were undertaken. Sixty species belonging to five families: Fomitopsidaceae, Ganodermataceae, Meruliaceae, Meripilaceae and Polyporaceae were recorded. Polyporaceae was the dominant family with 46 species identified. The common species encountered based on the number of basidiocarps collected were Ganoderma australe followed by Lentinus squarrosulus, Earliella scabrosa, Pycnoporus sanguineus, Lentinus connatus, Microporus xanthopus, Trametes menziesii, Lenzites elegans, Lentinus sajor-caju and Microporus affinis. Eighteen genera with only one specie were also recorded i.e. Daedalea, Amauroderma, Flavodon, Earliella, Echinochaetae, Favolus, Flabellophora, Fomitella, Funalia, Hexagonia, Lignosus, Macrohyporia, Microporellus, Nigroporus, Panus, Perenniporia, Pseudofavolus and Pyrofomes. This study shows that strains of the G. lucidum and G. australe can be identified by 650 base pair nucleic acid sequence characters from ITS1, 5.8S rDNA and ITS2 region on the ribosomal DNA. The phylogenetic analysis used maximum-parsimony as the optimality criterion and heuristic searches used 100 replicates of random addition sequences with tree-bisection-reconnection (TBR) branch-swaping. Polypores (Basidiomycota) from Hunan Province, south-central China, were investi- gated during 1999–2002. Based on nearly 600 collections, 102 poroid species were identifi ed from the study area; some species identifi cations are given as tentative. Sixty-two species are new to Hunan, including ten species new to China. In addition, three new species, Cyclomyces lamellatus Y.C. Dai & Niemelä, Phellinus collinus Y.C. Dai & Niemelä and Polyporus pumilus Y.C. Dai & Niemelä are described and illus- trated. The fi rst one differs from the other species in the genus Cyclomyces by having imbricate basidiocarps, radially lamellate hymenophore and prominent setae. Phelli- nus collinus is characterized by a perennial habit, shining pore surface, very thin con- text, and the lack of setae; it has oblong-ellipsoid, golden yellow and often collapsed basidiospores. Polyporus pumilus is very characteristic in the genus because it has extremely small, pendent basidiocarps; its pores are smaller than in general in Poly- porus. -

A total of 45 macrofungi belonging to 6 orders, 15 families and 25 genera was collected, identified and described in the taxonomic checklist. Twenty-five species were able to identify up to species level. Most of the macrofungi are wood-rotters. Family Polyporaceae was recorded as the most abundant macrofungi family present in the area. Out of all macrofungi, 25 species were used by the Bugkalots as either as food or medicine. The Bugkalot tribal community in Alfonso Castañeda, Nueva Vizcaya is a habitat for the different macrofungal species. Thus, further studies should be done on other season to determine the species richness and distribution of macrofungi in the community. -
