EPILOGUE LISTER’S PORTRAIT AND THE TRAGEDY OF BURWELL PARK The reader may note that the main (and only) portrait of Martin Lister in this book is in monochrome (Figure ). When I began this work, I believed optimistically that a lovely full-colored visage would be trivial to find. Surely, such an eminent Royal physician, officer of the Royal Society, alumnus of Cambridge and Oxford, and major donor to the Ashmolean Museum would have had several images painted or engraved. After all, there were numerous portraits of his parents, his mother’s being part of the Tate Collection.1 Lister’s daughters were also artists, so it was not altogether unreasonable to expect that they had subjected their father to a sitting. I was wrong. Paraphrasing George Bernard Shaw: “The reasonable woman adapts herself to the world: the unreasonable woman persists in trying to adapt the world to herself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreason- able woman,” I decided I had better make some progress.2 Three years of queries around the world passed without any solid leads, the only image available a damaged and fuzzy reproduction that was circulating on Wikipedia without attribution. After weeks of searching, I tracked down the Wikipedia image to a black-and-white photograph in the archives of the Natural History Museum in London, but, frustratingly, the photo had no provenance. John Parker and Basil Harley had to use the same unsatisfactory illustration for their groundbreaking transla- tion of Lister’s English Spiders. I came slowly to the conclusion that perhaps that would be my fate as well. -

You are fascinated with botany and hope to enrich your garden with some exotic plants from the British Isles. You write to your acquaintances in London to send you some seeds, especially from the species named ... Well, yes, what is that species called? And even if you know its name, would your English correspondent call that British plant the same name? Or would he think that the name refers to another species? How can you make sure that you will receive the plant you were thinking of? In the period before the widespread acceptance of Linnaeus' binomial system, how do you establish a common system of communication that could ensure that your private identifications of plants are understood by your correspondents all around Europe? Johann Amman faced exactly these difficulties as professor of botany and natural history at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. The Swiss natural historian came to Russia in 1733 at the bright age of 26. He trained in Leiden during the 1720s and then worked in London for a few years as curatorial assistant in the collection of Hans Sloane, which was later to become the British Museum. Once he moved to Petersburg, Amman was responsible for the upkeep of the Academy's botanical garden. As part of the job, it was necessary that he actively participate in the international exchange of seeds and plants. -

Edward Lhwyd, who succeeded Robert Plot as Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, figured and cited what appears to be a spiral coprolite, probably from the Jurassic Corallian Group (Oxfordian) of Garford near Abingdon in his Lithophylacii Britannici Ichnographia (1699). Gottlieb Friedrich Mylius figured a specimen from the Permian Kupferschiefer of Eisleben in Saxony in his Memorabilium Saxoniæ Subterraeæ (1709). Brief bio- graphical details are given for these two authors. William Buckland seems to have been unaware of these reports as he included no mention of them in his various papers on coprolites in the 1820’s and 1830’s. EDWARD LHWYD scribing to 10 copies each. The total print run of 120 copies meant that the author received 20 books himself. As a consequence, Lhwyd’s The period prior to the identification of coprolites as fossil feces Lithophylacii Britannici Ichnographia (“British Figured Stones;” Fig. 1) by William Buckland in 1829, although not entirely fallow, contained was eventually published in February 1699, and the subscribers ensured patchy records of these structures at best (Duffin, 2009). The first that the volume was distributed extensively both at home and on the written report, accompanied by a figure, of a vertebrate coprolite ap- continent (and even, by the end of the following century, to the USA; pears to be that given by Edward Lhwyd (1660-1709). -

Insects in Seventeenth-Century European Art and Science

Ogilvie History Department, University of Massachusetts Amherst [email protected] Abstract Keywords: Artists and naturalists in seventeenth-century Europe avidly pursued the study of insects. Natural history, Since entomology had not yet become a distinct discipline, these studies were pursued art, within the framework of natural history, miniature painting, medicine, and anatomy. In science, the late sixteenth century the Renaissance naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi collected and insects, described individual insects and their lore but showed little sustained interest in their tem- entomology poral transmutations; meanwhile, the court artist Joris Hoefnagel studied the structure of insects in order to paint real and imaginary insects while giving them an emblematic inter- pretation. By the middle of the seventeenth century the painter Johannes Goedaert was assiduously studying insect transformations, which he saw as evidence of God’s wondrous works. His work was critiqued and systematized by the physicians Martin Lister and Jan Swammerdam, who insisted that orderly transformation was the best sign of God’s hand- iwork. These examples show how verbal descriptions and illustrations of insects easily crossed disciplinary boundaries; knowledge generated in one particular context moved into others where it was critiqued but also employed in new investigations. part 6 Britain, Scotland, and Ireland ∵ Matthew Walker - 9789004378216 Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 11:26:52PM via free access Matthew Walker - 9789004378216 Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 11:26:52PM via free access chapter 23 Writing about Romano-British Architecture in the Late Seventeenth Century Matthew Walker In* the preface to his 1707 reissue of his Account of Architects and Architecture, the English writer John Evelyn made the following observation: Those who are a little Conversant in the Saxon Writers, clearly discovered by what they find Innovated, or now grown Obsolete, that we have lost more than we have gain’d; and as to Terms of useful Arts in particular, forgotten and lost a World of most apt and proper Expressions which our Forefathers made use of, without being Oblig’d to other Nations.1 The context for these remarks was Evelyn’s attempts to educate English read- ers in the Vitruvian architectural lexicon; the language of classical architecture that had, Evelyn thought, once been known about in Britain during the Roman occupation and, apparently, in the years of Saxon rule that followed, but had been largely ‘forgotten’ during the later Middle Ages. Evelyn’s characterisation of the development of British architectural under- standing was, then, a narrative that began with a golden age of Roman rule followed by a period of relative Saxon enlightenment in which Roman knowl- edge was, to some degree, retained. This was then superseded by a Dark Age of the Gothic, presumably coinciding with what we now call the High and Late Middle Ages in Britain.
