DOVELL Within our own generation a scientist who always weighed his words could say of the Everglades: Of the few as yet but very imperfectly explored regions in the United States, the largest perhaps is the southernmost part of Florida below the 26th degree of northern latitude. This is particularly true of the central and western portions of this region, which inland are an unmapped wilderness of everglades and cypress swamps, and off-shore a maze of low mangrove “keys” or islands, mostly unnamed and uncharted, with channels, “rivers” and “bays” about them which are known only to a few of the trappers and hunters who have lived a greater part of their life in that region. 1 This was Ales Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian Institution, the author of a definitive study of anthropology in Florida written about 1920 ; and it is not far from the truth today. -

Postal 42494; 04299-970 São Paulo, SP, Brazil; [email protected] Abstract Columbella costa, a new species from off Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is described. This new species is characterized by its obesity; high spire; smooth, glossy surface; and by a deeper water habitat of 30-35 m. This is the second species of the genus found off the Brazilian coast and the only one occurring in its bathymetric range. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. -

Boeters Karneidstrasse 8, D 81545 Munchen, Germany In France the genusAlzoniella Giusti & Bodon, 1984, is represented with two subgenera, viz. its nominate subgenus and Navarriella subgen. nov. The nominate subgenus comprises six three species, ofwhich are described as viz. A. haicabia A. new, (A.) spec. nov., (A.) junqua spec. A. nov. and A. (A.) provincialis spec. nov., next to (A.) navarrensis Boeters, 1999, A. (A.) perrisii and A. (Dupuy, 1851) (A.) pyrenaica (Boeters, 1983). The new subgenus is proposed for A. (Navarriella) elliptica (Paladilhe, 1874) only. A. (A.) perrisii (Dupuy, 1851) [Hydrobia], the first of this became known from is redefined and species genus that France, described here with two viz. (8) 91 BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIR OF AUGUSTUS ADDISON GOULD. The subject of this memoir descended from true pioneer stock and since heredity, especially of men of eminence, has a scien- tific as well as a personal interest, it is well to include here a brief notice of his lineage, derived from family documents. The earliest ancestors noted are Zaccheus Gould, of Boving- don, Herts, England, who emigrated to America about 1638 and died, aged 81, in 1670; and John Durant, or Duren, supposed French Huguenot, who emigrated in November, 1659, and in 1670 married Susannah Dalton. One of the Durens, grandfather of our late associate, was a builder of note and designed a truss bridge which he erected over Pawtucket Falls, near Lowell, Mass., one of the earliest self-supporting bridges built in this country. His son, Nathaniel Gould Duren, was born in Bedford, Mass., in 1781, and when eleven years of age went to live with a maternal uncle at New Ipswich, N. H. This uncle, Nathaniel Gould, adopted his nephew, whose name was changed by legal process to Nathaniel Duren Gould. Young Gould, November 15, 1801, married Sally Andrews Prichard, of Welsh extraction, whose ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Old Rowley, now Boxford, Mass. This marriage was blessed with eight children, three of whom died in infancy. The second child and first survivor, born at New Ipswich, April 23, 1805, was AUGUSTUS ADDTSON GOULD, the subject of this memoir. -

Capinera2 Introduction Florida has only a few terrestrial slug species that are native (indigenous), but some non-native (nonindigenous) species have successfully established here. Many interceptions of slugs are made by quarantine inspectors (Robinson 1999), including species not yet found in the United States or restricted to areas of North America other than Florida. In addition to the many potential invasive slugs originating in temperate climates such as Europe, the traditional source of invasive molluscs for the US, Florida is also quite susceptible to invasion by slugs from warmer climates. Indeed, most of the invaders that have established here are warm-weather or tropical species. Following is a discus- sion of the situation in Florida, including problems with Figure 1.
