Purim Time at the Academy
Power of Words Day – Taanit Esther 5773
As students in the Academy gathered on the steps, Rabbi Krauss shared some thoughts on the importance of the day. “This Sunday we will celebrate Purim.” He said. “We are celebra ng because Mordechai told Esther that her words are powerful. If you don’t speak up we won’t be saved. Use your words well. You can change the fate and future of an en re na on.”
Rabbi Krauss con nued by telling the students that the words they use can make a difference. Nice words can help, build and create. Nega ve words can do the

opposite. On Taanit Esther we can spend the day thinking about the words we use and the way we speak. We can commit together as a community to be more careful in our speech. It is not easy, but we can be inspired by Ma Fenster z”l who challenged all of us to think about the power of our words.
Dr. Jennifer Fenster spoke about her husband Ma and his desire to refrain from Lashon Hara. On the first Power of Words Day, Ma explained to everyone that it was his dream to engage in posi ve speech, that words could hurt or heal and that we should all try to make an effort to guard our speech.
The day con nued with an inter-grade learning program prepared by our faculty. Grade 1 learned with grade 5, grade 2 with grade 6, grade 3 with grade 7 and grade 4 with grade 8. It was inspiring to see the students truly engaged in the learning-- with the older students “teaching” and having interes ng discussions with the younger children.
In celebra ng our third Power of Words day, Ma ’s dream has truly become a reality.

SAR gets into the spirit of Purim with Topsy Turvy Day!

Megillah Reading at SAR
On Purim morning, the SAR spirit was tangible. Students, teachers, parents, rela ves, and graduates listened to the eighth grade boys read the Megillah on the mezzanine while the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls read in the gym. The boys, taught by Rabbi Rosenberg, read wonderfully. The girls, taught by Morah Dina Najman, were amazing too.

When you enter SAR these days it’s as if you have walked into a tropical paradise! That is because the 3 rd grade rainforest has a new home in the atrium where you can feast your eyes on a wide variety of colorful and unique creatures. With the expert guidance of Mrs. Jaskoll, each third grader created an animal out of recycled materials. Surrounding the exhibit are informa ve posters giving many fascina ng details about animals, plants, products and the tribes that live in rain forests. Come by and take a look!
"Laining" 101
To enhance the Chumash curriculum, third grade students have been learning Taamay HaMikra (Torah Can lla on/trop) once a week. Rabbi Krauss and Morah Dina Najman have been teaching the children and they have been having a wonderful experience. Knowing how to chant the words of the text will greatly enhance the students' ability to read the psukim with accuracy and comprehension. Se ng the words to the trop will help the students to retain the words as well as their meaning, as

children pick up songs quickly and remember them longer than prose. It is exci ng to expose the students to this beau ful part of our mesorah in the context of the psukim they learn in class this year. It’s a pleasure watching the children grow in their love of Torah and mitzvot.
Wacky Wax Museum
Where can you go in New York City and see both a wax museum and tropical rainforest? The answer is, the SAR Academy, thanks to the Annual Third Grade Night at the Museum!
Your experience begins at the welcoming Visitors Center where guests are given a free combo cket as well as a packet of original poetry composed by talented third graders. As you enter the museum, the rainforest exhibit bursts with color and wildlife. Colorful toucans and blue morpho bu erflies soar overhead while frogs and jaguars wade through the water. Right across the way, the remarkable Rainforest Café featured Chef Eran's delicious tropical fruits, vegetables and chocolate and received rave reviews...
Wednesday night at the Wacky Wax Museum, visitors had a choice of three spacious exhibit halls filled with third graders dressed authen cally like biography characters. Whether you wished to learn about sports figures, poli cians, scien sts, musicians or ar sts, there was plenty to choose from! The costumes were complimented by crea ve props such as Ferris wheels, spaceships, giant crayons, hurdles and globes.
The exhibits were truly interac ve. In order to make each third grade exhibit come to life, guests read a sign and performed the indicated ac on. For example, if you made a peace sign, John Lennon began speaking. Visitors heard fascina ng details about each character's early life and their achievements. In turn, the exhibits heard interes ng stories from the guests. Neil Armstrong was fascinated to learn about a grandparent's neighbor who gave the original Armstrong a mezuzah to take into space. Edwin Binney (the inventor of Crayola crayons) was excited to meet a classmate's grandparent who had a rela ve who worked at the first ever Crayon Company of Edwin Binnney and his cousin Smith! The students ended their speeches with powerful messages to the world. They included: “Don’t be afraid to think differently,” “Be proud of your homeland and protect it well” and "Don't give up if you first do not succeed."
This museum is a must see for people of all ages! While only open once a year, it is

Smartboard presenta on with Rabbi Rosenberg about We had a lot of fun coming up to the board . מגילת רות and answering all of the ques ons. Finally, we went downstairs and to the chesed fair. There, we went around to different booths and learned about different organiza ons that we can help through our Bat Mitzvah project.
Chesed Fair
In conjunc on with the Pre-Bar and Bat Mitzvah Programs and the Matan Bat Mitzvah Program held this week, a Chesed Fair was set up in the atrium. Many children choose to do a chesed project at the me of their bar or bat mitzvah and we felt that organizing a chesed fair was a good way to encourage our students to learn about those op ons and to begin to engage in community service projects and volunteerism. The students had a chance to par cipate in hands-on service projects and to learn more about chesed opportuni es in our community.
We thank Areyvut for helping us coordinate this event and we thank the following organiza ons for a ending our fair; Afya Founda on, American Friends of Magen David Adom, Anne Frank Center, Boys Town Jerusalem, Bronx Jewish Community Council, Gi of Life, Hazon, Hebrew Free Burial Associa on, Jewish Communal Fund, Keren Or, Lev LaLev, Lone Soldier Center in memory of Michael Levin, Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Ins tute, Shaare Zedek, Volunteer Center of United Way.

If you could choose the “Question of the Week”,
what would you ask?
THAT "KIND OF WEEK"
This week the 8th grade "Cook it Up" elec ve led by Mrs. Stavsky went to P.O.T.S soup kitchen in the Bronx. We loaded plates with food, served the hungry, and cleaned up. Although it was hard work, the rewarding feeling that came a erwards paid off and gave us the experience of a life me. Not only did the people we served thank us, so did everyone on the staff. Some of them even said “Shalom”! We learned many valuable lessons that we hope to take with us for the rest of our lives. It was truly a great experience!

DVAR TORAH
Parshat Ki Tisa – by Micah Gentin 6W
This week we read Parshat Ki Tisa. At the very beginning of Parshat Ki Tisa, Hashem commands every man over 20 years old to give in a half shekel. But why does Hashem do this with a half a shekel? A teacher of mine, Hersh Wolf, gives two prac cal answers, and a lesson we can all learn from. One answer is that Hashem was doing a census, a coun ng of the people. He does the coun ng with money because in Judaism it is considered an insult to count people by numbers, so instead of everyone just being counted with numbers, they added up all the shekalim. Another reason for the coun ng of the people is that it is used as a fundraiser to purchase korbanot for the next year, as Adar is the last month of the year in the Torah.
13 of 20 3/1/2013 11:18 AM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.1.13 - Parshat Ki Tisa https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear...
A very nice lesson we can learn is that although some people are wealthier than others, Hashem commands everybody to pay the same price. Hashem shows this ,The rich shall not give more" " העשיר לא ירבה והדל לא ימעט ":in perek lamed aleph and the poor shall not give less". By saying this, Hashem shows the na on that everybody is equal, rich or poor, big or small. They are all part of something bigger, klal yisrael, and everybody is an equal in it. This is why Hashem makes the price only half a shekel, because we are all equal in something very big. We should try to apply this message into our everyday lives by not excluding people and making everyone feel equal.
Shabbat Shalom.
