ACADEMY NEWS Purim Time at the Academy Power of Words Day – Taanit Esther 5773 As students in the Academy gathered on the steps, Rabbi Krauss shared some thoughts on the importance of the day. “This Sunday we will celebrate Purim.” He said. “We are celebrang because Mordechai told Esther that her words are powerful. If you don’t speak up we won’t be saved. Use your words well. You can change the fate and future of an enre naon.” Rabbi Krauss connued by telling the students that the words they use can make a difference. Nice words can help, build and create. On Taanit Esther we can spend the day thinking about the words we use and the way we speak. We can commit together as a community to be more careful in our speech. It is not easy, but we can be inspired by Ma Fenster z”l who challenged all of us to think about the power of our words. Dr. Jennifer Fenster spoke about her husband Ma and his desire to refrain from Lashon Hara. On the first Power of Words Day, Ma explained to everyone that it was his dream to engage in posive speech, that words could hurt or heal and that we should all try to make an effort to guard our speech. The day connued with an inter-grade learning program prepared by our faculty. Grade 1 learned with grade 5, grade 2 with grade 6, grade 3 with grade 7 and grade 4 with grade 8. It was inspiring to see the students truly engaged in the learning-- with the older students “teaching” and having interesng discussions with the younger children. In celebrang our third Power of Words day, Ma’s dream has truly become a reality. Click here to see the video. The ELC children, all dressed in costume, held their annual Purim parade through the big building. They then saw a Purim play in the mul-purpose room performed by their teachers. Everyone had a great me! Click here to see more photos. *********************************** Megillah Reading at SAR On Purim morning, the SAR spirit was tangible. Students, teachers, parents, relaves, and graduates listened to the eighth grade boys read the Megillah on the mezzanine while the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls read in the gym. The boys, taught by Rabbi Rosenberg, read wonderfully. The girls, taught by Morah Dina Najman, were amazing too. Kol Hakavod! When you enter SAR these days it’s as if you have walked into a tropical paradise! That is because the 3 rd grade rainforest has a new home in the atrium where you can feast your eyes on a wide variety of colorful and unique creatures. With the expert guidance of Mrs. Jaskoll, each third grader created an animal out of recycled materials. Surrounding the exhibit are informave posters giving many fascinang details about animals, plants, products and the tribes that live in rain forests. Come by and take a look! "Laining" 101 To enhance the Chumash curriculum, third grade students have been learning Taamay HaMikra (Torah Canllaon/trop) once a week. Rabbi Krauss and Morah Dina Najman have been teaching the children and they have been having a wonderful experience. Knowing how to chant the words of the text will greatly enhance the students' ability to read the psukim with accuracy and comprehension. Seng the words to the trop will help the students to retain the words as well as their meaning, as 5 of 20 3/1/2013 11:18 AM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.1.13 - Parshat Ki Tisa https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... children pick up songs quickly and remember them longer than prose. It is excing to expose the students to this beauful part of our mesorah in the context of the psukim they learn in class this year. It’s a pleasure watching the children grow in their love of Torah and mitzvot. Wacky Wax Museum Where can you go in New York City and see both a wax museum and tropical rainforest? The answer is, the SAR Academy, thanks to the Annual Third Grade Night at the Museum! Your experience begins at the welcoming Visitors Center where guests are given a free combo cket as well as a packet of original poetry composed by talented third graders. As you enter the museum, the rainforest exhibit bursts with color and wildlife. Colorful toucans and blue morpho buerflies soar overhead while frogs and jaguars wade through the water. Right across the way, the remarkable Rainforest Café featured Chef Eran's delicious tropical fruits, vegetables and chocolate and received rave reviews... Wednesday night at the Wacky Wax Museum, visitors had a choice of three spacious exhibit halls filled with third graders dressed authencally like biography characters. Whether you wished to learn about sports figures, policians, sciensts, musicians or arsts, there was plenty to choose from! The costumes were complimented by creave props such as Ferris wheels, spaceships, giant crayons, hurdles and globes. The exhibits were truly interacve. In order to make each third grade exhibit come to life, guests read a sign and performed the indicated acon. For example, if you made a peace sign, John Lennon began speaking. Visitors heard fascinang details about each character's early life and their achievements. In turn, the exhibits heard interesng stories from the guests. Neil Armstrong was fascinated to learn about a grandparent's neighbor who gave the original Armstrong a mezuzah to take into space. Edwin Binney (the inventor of Crayola crayons) was excited to meet a classmate's grandparent who had a relave who worked at the first ever Crayon Company of Edwin Binnney and his cousin Smith! The students ended their speeches with powerful messages to the world. They included: “Don’t be afraid to think differently,” “Be proud of your homeland and protect it well” and "Don't give up if you first do not succeed." This museum is a must see for people of all ages!
