Then continue with an exploring tour of Yerevan during which you will see – Republic Square, Cascade, Opera House, Matenadaran building, Mashtots Avenue. DAY 3: YEREVAN/ EJMIATSIN /ST.HRIPSIME/ZVARTNOTS/YEREVAN Breakfast at the hotel. Visit to Echmiadzin - the holy seat of the Supreme Patriarch-Catholicos of all Armenians. The Cathedral was built in 303 on the site of a pagan temple after the adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301. Visit St. Hripsime Church (7th century). A few kilometers from Ejmiadzin are the ruins of the 7th century AD Temple of Zvartnots (buiIt in 641—661), which was to suppress Ejmiatsin cathedral by its grandeur. The remnants of Zvartnots are a wonderful sight, even in ruins. Only the lower parts of the walls and individual fragments have been survived. Back to Yerevan. Lunch at the local restaurant. Dinner at the restaurant in Yerevan. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. DAY 4: YEREVAN/ GARNI/ GEGHARD/YEREVAN Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Garni & Geghard. Here, in the harmony of the relief and the virgin nature you will see the pagan Garni architectural complex of the 1st century and feel the spirit of ancient ages. *In the village of Garni, you will have the opportunity to take part in a master class on lavash baking. Lavash is traditional Armenian thin bread that represents our national cuisine and originates from Ancient Armenia. We will taste it with cheese and armenian herbals. Drive to Khor Virap, the site of royal prison where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held for thirteen years before converting Armenia into the first Christian nation in 301. Guided by the remote majesty of biblical mount Ararat, we explore the site, its underground chambers, elegant chapels and are captivated by the ascetic atmosphere of the site. Visit to Areni factory (here we will taste 11- 12 types of wine). The tour will on to the 12th century monastery complex of Noravank set in a canyon rich with rare flora. Back to Yerevan. Visitors to Armenia are often thrilled to find the plentiful displays of market-fresh produce and foodstuffs, which are unveiled by private vendors daily. The fresh fruits, dried fruits, nuts and vegetables of Armenia enjoy a much-deserved reputation and are easy to shop for at any neighborhood food market. Vendors in open markets will entice the prospective shopper with their wares, luring them with homemade wafer-thin sheets of fruit rolls, and various dried fruit and nut combinations, not to mention the seasonal assortment of fresh produce at the time, which can include apricots, figs, mulberries, and pomegranates. The settlement is full of historical architectural monuments constructed in different periods (II millennium BC to XVIII AD). Visit Ohanavank, an medieval monastery located in the village of Ohanavan in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. The monastery stands on the edge of the Kasagh River canyon, and its territory is adjacent to the village of Ohanavan. The deep gorge is carved by the Kasagh River. Continue to Saghmosavank, founded by St. Gregory the Illuminator and that of the 13th century, famous for its depository of manuscripts. Back to Yerevan. Lunch at the local restaurant. We will also visit Matenadaran, which means a "book-depository" in old Armenian. Indeed, Matenadaran is the pride of Armenian culture, the world's largest storage of ancient manuscripts. In fact, it is a scientific research institute of ancient manuscripts which stores more than 17 thousand ancient manuscripts and more than 100 thousand ancient archival documents.

    Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church Dr. Law Chi Lim Armenia is a landlocked country in South Caucasia in Euroasia. The Armenians trace their origin as far back as 1000 BC, and the Armenian Empire at its zenith ( 95 to 66 BC) occupied a much larger areas than what it does today, encompassing lands in what is now Eastern Turkey and Iran. In the past, Armenia has been invaded and conquered numerous times by her powerful neighbours: Persians, Monguls, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and Russians. Thus , the history of the land, particularly in the 20th century, is one of tragedy and trauma, resulting in waves of exodus of its people. The fact is , while there are only about 3 million people living in present-day Armenia now , there are up to 8 million ethnic Armenians living outside the country in various parts of the world. The Armenian Apostolic Church Christianity spread to Armenia as early as AD 40 . In fact, it was in AD 301 that it became the first country in the history of the world to make Christianity a state religion---- a full ten years before the Roman Empire officially stopped persecuting Christians, and 36 years before Constantine the Great was baptized. Tradition has it that it was Bartholomew and Thaddeus ( two of the original twelve apostles of Christ) who went to Armenia to spread the gospel in the 1st century and hence the name of Armenia Apostolic Church. While initially the church remained in communion with the religious authorities in Rome, in time, because of theological reasons( Note 1), it began to distant itself from Rome .

Oshakan village/Mesrop Mashtots Church Mesrop Mashtots Church Oshakan is the village near Ashtarak Town in the Aragatsotn Province with population about 6000 people. There are many places of interest in Oshakan but the most important of them is St. Mesrop Mashtots Church. It was built between 1873 and 1879. Before that on its place was a chapel, constructed in 443. The church is famous of being the burial place of St. Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of Armenian alphabet. Several years ago 36 khachkars, traditional Armenian cross-stones, were placed in the yard of the church. These cross-stones are depicting the 36 original letters of Armenian alphabet, created by St. Mesrop Mashtots in 405 A.D. There are numerous archaeological and architectural monument within and around Oshakan such as cyclopean fortress (2nd millennium B.C.), castle (7th century B.C.), more than 1000 Urartian tombs, St. Zion church (7th century A.D.), an original monument (7th or 8th centuries) which marks the grave of the Byzantine Emperor Mauricius or his mother. Karmravor Church (7th century) Karmravor Church Karmravor (which means reddish) Church, a.k.a. Church of the Holy Mother of God, is the only church in Armenia which preserved its original tile roof.
