Boycotting a person who doesn’t boycott a deviant

Boycotting a person who doesn’t boycott a deviant

By , Shaykh Muqbil Al-Wad’i (may Allah rest him in )

Question: I have learned that boycotting an innovator is obligatory , when he continues to practice his bid’ah. However, is it correct to boycott the individual who doesn’t boycott the innovator? Furthermore, he doesn’t act according to his knowledge, and he mixes and associates with the innovators and doesn’t shun them?

Answer: Before this, boycotting was limited in extent to the era of the . Then afterwards the affair spread. How is that? For example, you believe that you are calling him to Allah, and perhaps he might return to what’s correct. Additionally, you feel that if you abandon him and boycott him, perhaps he will continue to stick to his misguidance, or even another group will embrace him. All the while you are looking for the well being of Islam and the Muslims. For this reason don’t boycott him for the mere sake of your benefit. The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: ” The rights the Muslim has on another Muslim are five…” among these five rights is ,” …when he meets him, he greets him.”

On the other hand, if you believe that your boycotting him would return him to the truth and he would repent, then you can stay away from him. Boycotting and shunning a person, as I previously mentioned was limited in extent to the time of the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam). He boycotted three people who stayed behind in a , and he boycotted his wives for a month. Boycotting polishes a person’s character. Allah’s aide is sought.

It is incorrect for us to expand and extend in this issue of boycotting, so much so, we drive people away from the Sunnah and goodness. So, what remains now ? We boycott a person who doesn’t shun an innovator. You have taken it to this level in boycotting people? May Allah bless you. You don’t have any proof for us to boycott a person who doesn’t shun an innovator. Even if you were to say for example, the one who doesn’t consider a disbeliever to be a kafir is a disbeliever, then this principle wouldn’t be correct here.

Rather the person who doesn’t consider a disbeliever a kafir is an agreed upon principle. For example, he says the Jews and Christians are not disbelievers. This kind of person is considered a disbeliever , because he disbelieved in the Quran. Nonetheless, a person says,” The person who abandons the prayer is a kafir and another says the opposite, then this is an issue that our scholars have differed about.

The Immediate Danger of a Scholar’s Slip and Error

The Immediate Danger of a Scholar’s Slip and Error

By Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyah

The writers of Sunnah have combined both the corruption and destruction of blind following, along with the scholar’s slip and error. They compiled such works to highlight the wrongness of blind following. It is inevitable that a scholar will err; as he isn’t infallible. Therefore it is not permissible to accept everything single word he says. It is Haraam to lodge a scholar’s statement in the location of surefire speech. For this reason, every single scholar on the face of the Earth has dispraised blind following and making a scholar’s statements definite.

The people of knowledge consider such actions Haraam and have criticized its people who practice such. The origin of fitnah among the blind followers is they blindly follow a scholar in every single thing he says. Therefore they follow him in which he’s correct about and makes an error in. These people make no distinction between what’s right or wrong in a scholar’s words. Hence, as usual they make mistakes in the religion. They make Halal what Allah has made Haraam, they make Haraam what Allah has made Halal and they enact laws and regulations which Allah did not prescribe. To be expected, these people will do these actions; as the person they blindly follow isn’t flawless. There is no doubt about it he will make a mistake.

Ash-Sha’bee said: ” There are three things which corrupt an era: Misguided , disputing about the meanings of the Quran while the Quran is true, and the slip and mistakes of a scholar. “

Tameem Ad-Darami said: “Beware of a scholar’s mistake. Amr asked: what are the mistakes of an Alim? He said: “He makes an error, and then the people take it and act by it. Perhaps, this scholar repents to Allah, while the people continue to follow his error.”

Ibn Abdul Bar said: The mistake of a scholar resembles the ships rupture, because when the ship sinks everyone goes under.” Taken from ( ‘Ilamul Muwaqqa-een page 453/ volume 3. printed by Dar ibnul Jawzi 1424)

Fasting on Saturday and Sunday

Fasting on Saturday and Sunday

Umm Salaamah (Radi Allahu anha) reported the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) used to fast on Saturday and Sunday than on any other days. He said, ” These days are the Eed for the Polytheists and I love to do the opposite of what they do.”

Collected by Ahmed(6/323) Hakim (1593) Ibn Hibban (3646)

Scholarly remarks for this subject:

There is a difference of opinion about the authenticity of this hadeeth, while the majority hold it to be Hasan. Among these scholars who have graded it authentic are; Al-Hakim, Ath-Thahabbi, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Taymiyah ,Al-Arna-ut and Al-Albani.

This hadeeth shows the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) used to fast Saturday and Sunday. He did this to contradict the Jews and Christians. Saturday is the off day for the Jews and Sunday is the day off for the Christians. Friday is the Eid for the Muslims. Allah the Most High, led these nations astray from Friday. The jews took Saturday. They say, ” On this day all of creation concluded. Allah says , ” Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days…(Al-A’raf 54). According to the Jews ,creation began on Sunday and finished on Saturday. Also, the Jews claim Allah rested on Saturday after creating creation. Allah is free from such claims.

Sunday is the weekend for the Christians. They chose this day saying, creation began on Sunday. The six days it took Allah to create the heavens, the earth and everything between them began on Sunday. Therefore, they have made the day creation began to be the day of their Eid. This is from their desires. Allah didn’t legislate such a thing.

Muhammad (sallAlahu alayhi wa salam) chose to fast on this day in order to contradict the people of the books’ actions. He always loved doing the opposite of what they do in their worship and so forth. Furthermore, he prohibited us from resembling the Jews and Christians. Therefore, it’s not allowed for the Muslims to take part in the holidays of the Kuffar or eat their food, which they prepare for these festivities. Moreover, it’s not permissible to greet them on their Eid or attend their Eid gatherings.

Abu Dawud held that this hadeeth specifies how fasting on Saturday is to be done or it abrogated the impermissibility to fast on Saturday.(Explanation of Bulugh al-Maram by Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan)

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen (May Allah have mercy on him) said: Fasting Saturday and Sunday together is fine. Additionally, there is no problem to fast Friday and Saturday together as well.

The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) mentioned the reason why he fasted on Saturday and Sunday. Reason being, these are days of Edi for the Polytheists. So, based on this, if we are aware of other days for the Eid of the Polytheists is it recommended for us to fast? We say: The Messenger (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) only knew about these two days , so he fasted on them. (Al-Uthaymeen’s explanation for Bulugh Al-Maram)

Fiqh from the ayah of Wudu

Fiqh from the ayah of Wudu َ ﻳَﺎ أ ﻳُّﻬَﺎ اﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ آﻣَﻨُﻮاْ َ إِذَا ﻗُﻤْﺘُﻢْ إِﻟ ﻰ اﻟﺼَّﻼةِ ﻓﺎﻏْﺴِﻠُﻮاْ وُﺟُﻮﻫَﻜُﻢْ َ ُ َ ْ وَأ ﻳْﺪِﻳَﻜ ﻢْ إِﻟ ﻰ اﻟ ﻤَﺮَاﻓِﻖِ وَاﻣْﺴَﺤُﻮاْ ﺑِﺮُؤُوﺳِﻜُﻢْ َ َ ُ َ ْ َ وَأ رْﺟُﻠ ﻜ ﻢْ إِﻟ ﻰ اﻟ ﻜ ﻌْﺒَﻴﻦِ ” O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salat (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles…” (Al-Ma’idah 6)

Issues derived from this verse : 1: Oh you who believe … do the acts that require your faith

2: When you intend to offer As-Salat …This is an order to pray

3: When you intend to offer As-Salat … This is an order to make the intention for Wudu.

4: This verse shows that purification is a condition for the prayer.

5: Purification isn’t obligatory at the time or prayer, its obligatory when a person intends to pray.

6: When you intend to offer As-Salat …Includes all prayers, sunnah, obligatory, funeral, etc.[1]

7: Water is used to washthe body parts in Wudu: Face , both hands, head and feet

8: This verse shows that Istinjah isn’t a part of Wudu.

9: Water is used to rinse the mouth and nose .They are both part of the face.

10. This verse shows that washing each limb only once is obligatory[2]

11: When you intend to offer As-Salat … This verse shows that Wudu for every prayer is Sunnah[3]

12: The verse shows that wiping the neck during Wudu is an innovation.

13. The verse shows that Wudu is to be performed in the order. i.e the face is washed before the hands, and the head is wiped before the ankles.

Unraveling the Jihadists’ Judicial Errors & Sophisms (2)

Unraveling the Jihadists’ Judicial Errors & Sophisms (2)

Jihadists and terrorists groups use verses from the Quran and to mislead youth. In this series I will mention some of their judicial errors and the sophisms they use advantageously in their favor for corruption. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Umar Bazmoul authored a book, “Al-Muhkamu wal Mutashbih fee At- Takfir wal Jihad ” that critically discusses sophisms for Jihad and Takfir.

Allah says:

O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.[ : Muhammad,Verse:7]

Jihadists use this verse and say: Those who fight the disbelievers desiring to advance Islam and restore its honor after the period of lowliness, which its currently in, then they have made a great effort of jihad. If they are right then they will get a double reward and if they aren’t then they will get one reward.

The clear meaning for these doubts and misgivings:

The person who performs Jihad in a manner other than the way Allah legislated it, is not performing Jihad in Allah’s Cause. Acting in this fashion doesn’t benefit him to believe he’s fighting for Allah’s Religion!

Aiding Allah is through applying the Shari’ah and acting by it, not by contradicting it.

Abu Musa (Radi Allahu Anhu) narrated:

ﺟﺎء رﺟﻞ إﻟﻰ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ و ﺳﻠﻢ ﻓﻘﺎل اﻟﺮﺟﻞ ﻳﻘﺎﺗﻞ ﺣﻤﻴﺔ وﻳﻘﺎﺗﻞ ﺷﺠﺎﻋﺔ وﻳﻘﺎﺗﻞ رﻳﺎء ﻓﺄي ذﻟﻚ ﻓﻲ ﺳﺒﻴﻞ اﻟﻠﻪ ؟ ﻗﺎل ( ﻣﻦ ﻗﺎﺗﻞ ﻟﺘﻜﻮن ﻛﻠﻤﺔ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻫﻲ اﻟﻌﻠﻴﺎ ﻓﻬﻮ ﻓﻲ ﺳﺒﻴﻞ اﻟﻠﻪ . and said, “A man fights for )( ﷺA man came to the Prophet pride and haughtiness another fights for bravery, and another fights for showing off; which of these (cases) is in Allah’s said, “The one who fights that Allah’s (ﷺ) Cause?” The Prophet Word (Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah’s Cause.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 7458)

This hadeeth confirms the Mujahid is the one who fights to make Islam superior and make the entire religion solely for Allah. Therefore, the person who does Jihad in opposite to what Allah legislated isn’t fighting for Allah’s Cause.

As long as Jihad is done within the bounds of Allah’s commands and prohibitions then it’s Jihad to spread Islam. Whenever the ,came with ( ﷺ)person diverts from the legislation Muhammad then he isn’t performing Jihad for Allah’s cause. Conversely, this person’s jihad is one for his innovation and desires cause. His jihad is a Bid’ah.

It isn’t everyone that fights claiming he’s performing Jihad, is doing so for Allah’s Cause. Especially, if they aren’t following the Quran and Sunnah. The person fighting must stay within the limits set by Allah and avoid what He prohibited.

Islam prohibits killing Muslims unjustly! Some of the people claiming to be participating in Jihad route to killing each other. They make permissible for themselves our rights Islam protects (blood/wealth). They do these acts claiming it is Jihad. This is only an innovated jihad (Jihad Bid’ee). It is deemed so as it is outside the limits Allah set and exceeds the Shar’iah and (Islamic) Methodology (for Jihad).

It is must to know the difference between the legislated Jihad Allah and His Messenger commands from the Innovated Jihad, the Jihad of the people of misguidance. They perform Jihad obeying Shaytaan, while they believe they are obeying Ar- Rahman. This kind of Jihad resembles the one from the people of desires and innovation .i.e the Khawarij. They fight against the Muslims and against the righteous and pious who preceded them [1] ( pages 371-374)

Unraveling the Jihadists’ Judicial Errors & Sophisms

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Umar Bazmoul authored a book, “Al-Muhkamu wal Mutashabih fee At- Takfiri wal Jihad ” that critically discusses sophisms for Jihad and Takfir.

Allah says:

As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah’s Religion – Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allah is with the Muhsinun (good doers).”[ Al-Ankabut 69]

Jihadists say: Allah has guided the people of Jihad and bestowed honor on them from Himself. Therefore, we don’t give ear to any speech from the scholars, but only from the people of Jihad. They are the reference points for jurisprudence of momentous events.

Sufayan ibn ‘ Uyaynah said: When you see the people differing, then cling to the Mujahiddeen and those stern against the enemy. Allah says: We will surely guide them to Our Paths.

Abdullah ibn Mubarak said: If an issue becomes difficult for a person to comprehend, then must ask the people fighting the enemy about it. The clear meaning for these doubts and misgivings:

This ayah is Meccan; as suratul Ankabut is Meccan. It’s known that Jihad with the meaning fighting against the disbelievers wasn’t revealed in . Therefore, the meaning for Jihad here must define the struggle against the soul to obey Allah the Most high.

Hence, the meaning of this refers to those who fight against their souls to obey Allah. What’s more, at the head of that great effort is seeking knowledge. Allah guides the seeker of knowledge. The meaning for this verse is found when it’s referred to texts for seeking knowledge and remaining firm in obedience to Allah.

Al-Hasan said: The best jihad is to disagree with desires.

Al-Fadayl ibn ‘Iyyad said: Those who strive in seeking knowledge, we will guide them to the path of deeds to act by.

Sahl ibn Abdillah said: those who strive to establish the sunnah,we will guide them to the path of Jannah.

Ibn Abbass said: Those who strive in obeying us(Allah), we will guide them to the paths of our reward.( Al-Baghawi for this verse)

As-Sadee and others said: This verse was revealed before the obligation of fighting Jihad. Ad-Dahak said the meaning for the verse: (As for those who strive hard) refers to Hijrah: (We will surely guide them…) the path which leads to firm faith.

Paths here can mean the path to jannah and the way to reach it. Moreover it could also mean paths of deeds which lead to jannah and correct belief. ( pages 416-420)[1]

Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) narrated the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: Souls are troops collected together: Those who have similar qualities are inclined to each other, but those who have dissimilar qualities, will differ.”

Collected by Muslim (2031)

Brief commentary for this hadeeth:

Imam Abee Hatim Muhammad ibn Hibban[1] said: After the Qadr of Allah, a person is inclined to someone or differs with them due to the similar qualities or unalike character. Whenever two souls share affinity there is harmony in their spirit. What’s more is every time two souls differ there is disunity among their person.

Qatadah said about Allah’s speech, ” Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy… (:119). For Mercy and obedience. The people who obey Allah, their hearts and desires are united, even though they may reside in different areas. The people of disobedience hearts are not united, even though they may reside in the same location.

Ibn Hibban said: This is the concrete evidence for knowing a person; based on who he interacts with. A person is looked upon from the one he socially interacts with. A person follows the religion of his companion, as birds of the same feather flock together. I have never seen anything more apparent than this, more than, whenever there is smoke there is a fire.

The intelligent person avoids anything that arouses suspicion. Furthermore, he disassociates himself from anyone accused of (improper practices or beliefs). Reason being, a person is known by his companions. Whoever associates closely with someone is ascribed to that person. No man companions a person, unless he is similar to him in character.(Rawdatul ‘Uqala ) [2]

This Hadith of the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) sheds light on why sinners click with sinners, why hizbees group with each other so nicely, and why criminals get along with other criminals. There will always be a time when there will be someone we just won’t get on with, although they are Muslim. Additionally, it explains why the righteous people hang together, and why unrighteous people can’t relate to people of moral and good character. Allah says:

Bad statements are for bad people (or bad women for bad men) and bad people for bad statements (or bad men for bad women). Good statements are for good people (or good women for good men) and good people for good statements (or good men for good women), such (good people) are innocent of (each and every) bad statement which they say, for them is Forgiveness, and Rizqun Karim (generous provision i.e.Paradise).(An-Nur26)

Ibn Taymeeyah said: This refers to good men being suitable for good women, and bad men are for bad women. Likewise the same applies to women in reference to their spouses and companions. (Majmu 32/145)

Included in this verse isn’t just bad statements and good statements for such people, but rather, good actions for good people and bad actions for bad people. Conflicts and trials on Earth occur due to the mixture of these two catergories of people. On the Day of Judgment Allah will separate between them. (Refer to zadul ma’ad ibn by Ibn al Qayyim , the special traits of the good statement for Allah’s servants).

What is Salafi Dawah

Prepared by

Abu Aaliyah Abdullah ibn Dwight Battle

M.A Candidate (Hadith and its sciences)

Verily praises belong to Allah. We praise Him, seek his assistance and His forgiveness. Blessed is Allah, Who sent Islam as a complete way of life to mankind and sent His final and last Messenger Muhammad (SallAllahu alayhi wa salam).

Recently an article was sent out from Dr. Yasir Qadhi titled, “On Salafi Islam“. This article directly attacks the correct methodology of Islam, causes confusion among naive Muslims and aides the enemies of the Sunnah. What’s more is this paper can and will possibly push people away from Salafi character and its beliefs. Therefore due to this imminent threat, I seek Allah’s support in highlighting the misconceptions, distortions and contaminated facts found in this piece of writing. This is the second discussion on the subject of Dr. Yasir Qadhi’s (May Allah rectify his affairs) paper.

ﺑﺴﻢ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﻴﻢ

Dr Yasir Qadhi states:

1.1 Points of consensus among Salafī movements

There are some general characteristics that are present in all manifestations of Salafism, without exception. In particular:

Here Dr Yasir (May Allah pardon him) paves the way for the remaining part of his paper, by only mentioning a few points of consensus among Ahlus-Sunnah wa Jama’ah and not the foundations of the Salafi Dawah. He mentioned the points of consensus about , Aqeedah, and the avoidance of innovations among the Salafi Dawah, while strategically avoiding the consensus of obedience towards the ruler, as will be discussed later on. –Insha Allah

It would have been better for Dr Yasir to mention the fundamentals of the Dawah by relying on books [1] which mention and define the points of consensus among the Salaf.

The Dawah of Ahlus Sunnah is built on 3 principles;[2]

1: Sincerity in worship to Allah, which includes following the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam)

2: Sticking the Jama’a of the Muslims by hearing and obeying the ruler in everything except disobedience to Allah

3: Warning from innovation and innovators.

The proof for these three principles of our dawah can be found from the Prophet’s (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) words: دَﻋْﻮَﺗَﻬُﻢْ ، ﺗُﺤِﻴﻂ ﻣِﻦْ وَرَاﺋِﻬِﻢْ “Due to three things hatred doesn’t enter the heart of a Muslim:Sincerity in deeds for Allah, giving Nasihah to the A’immah of Muslims, and sticking to the Jama’ah. For indeed the call is protected from behind them”[3]

Shaykh Muhammad Adam Al-Ethiopi (may Allah preserve him) said

(Sincerity.) Means to do an act solely for Allah’s pleasure and His happiness, without seeking any worldly gain.

(Being sincere) means to have correct belief in Allah’s Lordship along with sincere intentions in worship. (Sincerity towards the rulers of the Muslims) means to obey them in their rights, not revolt against them.

(Sincerity towards the rulers of the Muslims) To agree with them in belief and in righteous deeds such as prayer in congregation and Jumu’ah , etc[4].

The foundation of Salafi dawah comes from Ahadeeth like this similar in meaning. Nonetheless, you forgot to mention and up this point of our discussion there aren’t any verses, Ahadeeth or statements from scholars to support your claims!

Dr. Yasir Qadhi at the end of this section says: they respect and take recourse to the legal and theological opinions of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya (d. 748/1328).

SubhanAllah! I ask you in all earnestness, is Ibn Taymiyya the only scholar referred to for recourse for legal and theological opinions? Aren’t the Quran and Sunnah and Ijma enough for recourse? One could easily understand from this speech my brother that the Salafi Muslims blindly follow Ibn Taymiyya in legal and theological opinions, and you know in reality; this isn’t a fact!

Allah orders us to take refer to the Quran, the Sunnah and the understanding of our salafi scholars. He says:

And if you have a dispute concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the messenger if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. [An-nisa’I 59] َ َ ُ ْ َ َ ّ ْ ُ ﻓ ﺎﺳْﺄ ﻟ ﻮا أ ﻫْﻞ اﻟﺬ ِﻛ ﺮِ إِن ﻛ ﻨﺘُﻢْ ﻻَ ﺗَﻌْﻠَﻤُﻮنَ

. “Ask the people of [the Scholars] if you don’t know”[ An-Nahl :43]

Dr Yasir (May Allah show you mercy) had you said: Salafi“ Muslims rely on the understanding of the Salaf to understand legal an theological opinions.”

I feel this would have been better and would have given a clear cut picture of this blessed Dawah, because the understanding of the salaf doesn’t restrict us to one particular Imam.

Imam Ahmed said: “Beware about speaking in an issue, which no Imam has preceded you in.”

Dr Yasir Qadhi says :1.2 Points of contention among Salafīgroups

This sub-title is very misleading. There aren’t any Salafi groups. The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) defined the Salafi Muslims as those who cling to truth as one party not factions. What’s more, he warned about groups that split up resulting from misguided leaders.

He (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

The thing I fear the most for my is Misguided leaders. Then He(sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: There will always remain a group of people from my nation adhering to the truth and those who oppose them, won’t harm them until Allah decree passes[5]

Dr Yasir says: “While there is general agreement on the above, there are numerous issues in which disagreement abounds…

Let’s get something understood before we continue. The differences among the Salaf don’t exists in the 3 absolute fundamentals of the Salafy Dawah, which include theology, methodology and straying from the Jama’ah. There are some differences among our salaf in positions of Fiqh stemming from various grounds and reasons.

Dr. Yasir says: Position with respect to the validity and necessity of following one of the jurisprudential schools (madhāhib):

The numerous Salafī strands hold conflicting positions with regard to the ruling on adhering to a particular , so much so that it has been a source of tension amongst them.

Which scholars hold this source of tension? It would be nice to review their arguments and their names.

Dr Yasir says: Impermissible: opposition to the canonization of the schools of law was historically a feature of the Ẓāhirīschool (of Ibn Ḥazm, d. 456H).

The Ẓāhirī School wasn’t started by Ibn Hazm. It was started by Dawud ibn Ali Al-Asbahani Az- (270H) [6] who was initially a student of Imam Ash-Shafi’s (204H) school. Their differences weren’t about the permissibility or impermissibility to follow a jurisprudent school, but mainly in the issues relating to Qiyas.(reasoning/analogy).The Zahiri school is a Mathhab, so I find it quite a challenge for them to hold it impermissible to follow a Jurisprudence school!

Dr. Yasir says: anti-madhhab’ trend can be traced back to Muḥammad Ḥayāt al-Sindhī (d. 1163) who influenced al-Ṣanʿānī (d. 1182), al-Shawkānī (d. 1250), Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān (d. 1307), and, most recently, Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (d. 2000). All of these individuals were decidedly anti-madhhabist.

These Imams that you mentioned were against fanaticism and blind following any Imam other than the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam).

Imam Ash-Shawkani said:

“Blind following is when the person doesn’t ask about the Quran, and Sunnah , but only asks about the Madhhab of his Imam.”[7]

Maybe this statement of Ash-Shawkani misleads you to believe he was anti–Madhhabist. He clearly rejected blind following the Imam of the Madhhab.

Imam Ash-Shawkani said:

” If a person goes beyond only relying on his Madhhab and asks for proof from the Quran and Sunnah, then he isn’t a blind follower. In this situation he’s safe. Every person who blindly follows isn’t blameworthy, when it’s made certain he asked the scholars about the Quran and Sunnah.” [8] Imam Mulla Ali Al-Qari Al-[9] said it best:”

” It’s not obligatory for anyone in this Ummah to be a Hanafi, Maliky , Shafa’I or , but rather it’s a must for everyone who doesn’t know something to ask the people of Dhikr [the Scholars]. The four Imams are included as the people of Dhikr[ the scholars]. For that reason it’s said, who follows an alim meets Allah safely. The people are only obliged to follow Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) [10]

Dr Yasir Qadhi says: Dissociation from ahl al-bidʿa. Theoretically all Salafīs dissociate from religious innovations and those who adhere to and propagate them.

This is correct brother, and it’s obligatory as ordered from the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) ُ ُ ْ َ وَإِﻳَّﺎﻛ ﻢْ وَاﻷ ﻣُﻮرَ اﻟ ﻤُﺤْﺪَﺛ ﺎتِ ، .ﻓَﺈِنَّ ﻛُﻞَّ ﺑِﺪْﻋَﺔٍ ﺿَﻼَﻟَﺔٌ “Beware of newly innovated matters. Every innovation is astray.“[11]

Shaykh Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbadd: these words drive a Muslim to follow the Sunnah and steer him away from all kinds of innovations.[12]

Dr. Yasir Qadhi says: However, the scope and method of how this dissociation is implemented at the practical level varies from group to group and from scholar to scholar.

This is totally incorrect. There is a brilliant book to add to your library titled:

إﺟﻤﺎع اﻟﻌﻠﻤﺎء ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻬﺠﺮ واﻟﺘﺤﺬﻳﺮ ﻣﻦ أﻫﻞ ” اﻷﻫﻮاء : ﺗﺄﻟﻴﻒ :ﺧﺎﻟﺪ اﻟﻈﻔﻴﺮي

” The Consensus of the Scholars for boycotting and warning against the people of desires” written by Khalid Adh- Dhafiri[13]

In this book the author mentioned over 30 Imams’ positions and guidelines for dealing with Ahl-al-bida’, all which are from a consensus of Ahlus Sunnah. And Allah knows best.

Dr Yasir (May Allah guide him) adds Those“ with the strictest stance on this issue inevitably cast a wide net of ‘guilt by association if person B associates with known deviant A, then person B is declared deviant. If person C then associates with deviant B, now he too becomes a deviant, ad infintum, ad nauseum. The unfortunate, though predictable, product of such disaffiliation and judgment is the precipitation of further division and splintering within this brand of the Salafī community.

The practices of the salaf illustrated in their books mention principles and guidelines for interacting with ahl-al-bid’a. This isn’t the discussion to mention such rules. However, you should begin with the Quran and the book mentioned above (May Allah grant you success)

Dr Yasir Qadhi says: This methodology is the defining group of the ‘Madkhalīs’

Allahu Musta’an! You avoided using the term Wahhabbi, but it’s easy for you say, “Madkhalis“.

Abu Hatim Muhammad ibn Ar-Razi said: “A sign from the people of innovation is they throw insulting titles on the people of Sunnah.[14] Dear Doctor Qadhi, this narration serves as a dire warning against blackening the names of Sunni scholars with disgracing titles, names or descriptions.

Dr yasir says: (students of the Saudi Shaykh Rabīʿ bin Hādī al-Madkhalī), who legitimize this practice by considering it an extension of the science of al-Jarh wa’l-taʿdīl (the science of ‘ḥadīth criticism’ whereby Ḥadīth specialists deem narrators to be reliable or not)

The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said: َّ َّ إ ﻳَّﺎﻛُﻢْ وَاﻟﻈ ﻦَّ ﻓَﺈِنَّ اﻟﻈ ﻦَّ ِ َ أ ﻛْﺬَبُ اﻟْﺤَﺪِﻳﺚِ “Beware of suspicion; verily it’s the worst kind of speech.”[15]

You consider the criticisms of Shaykh Rabee built on guilt association? Can you mention anyone he has criticized in that approach? Shaykh Rabee’ Al-Madkhali’s criticisms are based on knowledge and proof. In numerous questions and answers sessions he has explained the process of criticism and the manner of advice.

Question: A Salafi Muslim lives and works with a person who propagates innovation. Whenever he advises this brother, he doesn’t listen. Should he remain there with him?

Answer: It’s not permissible to sit with the people of innovation, live with them or be dependent on them. Allah says: And incline not toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allah, nor you would then be helped (Hud 113) If he is a layman or student of knowledge who loves the right path and desires advise, then he should be advised and taught. Conversely, if he’s a close friend to the person and cowering servant to him and disapproves of his errors in front of him at the same time, then this is a trial and refuge in Allah is sought. [16]

From this question it is plainly witnessed that the Shaykh doesn’t have the method of criticizing as you claim. The questioner clearly stated two things;

He lives and works with a person who propagates bid’ah. Wouldn’t you say living and working with a person of innovation is a form of association? Did Shaykh Rabee’ declare the questioner to be an innovator?

In any case and in all honesty, I must agree that there is a homogeneous group/society who use the science of Jarh wa Ta’dil in a heterodox method. They are notorious for connecting A to B then B to C from Face book pages, Twitter followings,e-mail lists,Cc and Bcc’ forwards ,and the likes. This group entices loyalists in its colonies by using Shaykh Rabee Al-Madhkhali’s name. To affiliate them to the Shaykh by connecting their method in opposite to his practice is sacrilege to the science of Jarh wa Ta’dil and to the Shaykh’s honor.

He said: “O Nuh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous.[ Hud: 46]

An Academic Discussion with Dr. Yasir Qadhi

Discussion #1

The term Salaf and its methodology

Prepared by

Abu Aaliyah Abdullah ibn Dwight Battle

M.A Candidate (Hadith and its sciences)

ﺑﺴﻢ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﻴﻢ

Verily praises belong to Allah. We praise Him, seek his assistance and His forgiveness. Blessed is Allah, Who sent Islam as a complete way of life to mankind and sent His final and last Messenger Muhammad (SallAllahu alayhi wa salam).

Recently an article was sent out from Dr. Yasir Qadhi titled, “On Salafi Islam”. This article directly attacks the correct practise of Islam, causes confusion among naive Muslims and aides the enemies of the Sunnah. What’s more is this paper can and will possibly push people away from Salafi character and its beliefs. Therefore due to this imminent threat, I seek Allah’s support in highlighting the misconceptions, distortions and contaminated facts found in this piece of writing.

ﺑﺴﻢ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﻴﻢ

In the beginning Dr. Yasir (May Allah rectify his affairs) begins by defining the term salafi . Nonetheless, he hurls deception for its definition. He misleads the reader into thinking the word, ” Salafi “ is a term not known to the Muslims, or is either new, or needs a more modern definition.

Dr Yasir says: What exactly is ‘Salafism’? In the absence of a unanimously agreed upon definition, I propose to elucidate the modern Salafī phenomena via an outline of its beginnings, an assessment of its particular characteristics, manifestations of it in various contemporary groups,…

Here, Dr. Yasir stayed away from basic academics. Having completed an Undergrad and a Postgraduate education from an Islamic university and more recently a PHD from Yale, he still managed to drop the ball by not presenting an accurate definition. That is, whenever we define something in Islam it has always been the methodology of a researcher to define the word linguistically, and then define it with its Islamic meaning.

Dr. Yasir where are those two meanings for this word, ” Salafi ” ? Don’t you have Lisan Al-Arab or Qamus al-Muheet ?My brother in Islam, since you aren’t aware about this word’s definition and propose to elucidate it for your readers, then allow me to assist you in defining it from the presence of a unanimously agreed upon meaning by Muslim linguists and Muslim scholars.

(ﺳﻠﻒ) Salaf

Allah (The Most high) says:

ْ َ ﻓَﺠَﻌَﻠ ﻨَﺎﻫُﻢْ ﺳَﻠ ﻔًﺎ وَﻣَﺜَﻼً ﻟِﻶﺧِﺮِﻳﻦَ And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations (Az-Zukhruf 56)

Al-Qurtubi said about this verse: We made Fir’aun a precedent an example for anyone who does the same acts they did. Mujahid said: Salaf refers to a sign for Muhammad’s (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) nation. Salaf (precedent) for the disbelievers among your people. They will precede them in entering Hell.[1]

Linquistically: refers to anyone who preceded you from your forefathers or close relatives, who are senior to you in age and virtue. For this reason the st1 generations from the Tabi’een[2] are called: As-Salaf As-Salih. Also, it refers to anyone who preceded you in a journey [3]

Here we find the meaning linguistically defined as anyone who has preceded us.

Islamic definition:

Allah says:

“And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well- pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.“ (At-Taubah 100)

The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

“A man asked the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) about the best people. He replied: The era I lived in, then the 2nd generation and then the 3rd generation.”[4]

These texts clearly illustrate the virtue of the Prophet’s (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) companions; as they are the best people after Muhammad. There is no doubt they preceded us in virtue, in knowledge and in faith.

Dr Qadhi says: Within the context of our modern World, or to be more precise over the last half a century, the term ‘Salafī’ has come to designate an Islamic methodology…”

Dr. Yasir (May Allah help you to see truth as it is) the fact of the matter is, Salafi has and always will be what designates an Islamic methodology. This term as you call it, in fact represents Islam in its particular application of all aspects of life including worship, character, belief, business dealings, marriage, divorce and the issuance of religious verdicts based on the understanding of our salaf (the 1st three noble generations of Al-Islam)

The Prophet ( SallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

” I have left you upon clarity its night resembles its daylight. No one deviates from it after my death, except he will be destroyed. Whoever among you lives after me will see a lot of differing. Therefore, you must hold on to what you know from my sunnah and the sunnah of the four rightly guided caliphs. Hold firmly to the sunnah.” [5]

” you must hold on to what you know from my sunnah…” this refers to Prophet Muhammad’s(sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) manner and method which he laid down in belief , and in obligatory and in sunnah actions.[6]

Day in and day out through the five daily prayers we ask Allah to guide us according to the way of Salaf.

6. Guide us to the Straight Way The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians). (Al-Fatihah 6-7)

Ibn Kathir said : This refers to the path of those who obeyed you among your servants such as, the Angels, the , those who believed in you, the martyrs and the righteous.[7]

Dr. Yasir says: Inasmuch as the term refers to a methodology, it would be fair to say that it does not specify any one particular or distinct community or group of believers…

This is conjecture mixed with some political mendacity. To use this term as a reference for only the methodology when in fact it defines what Islam is in practice and belief, is incorrect. Additionally, Salafi covers any Muslim and any group of people who adhere to its principles correctly. It makes no difference where they are. They could be in Africa, Asia, Europe, or in North or South America. Nonetheless, had you said, “It’s not restricted to one particular or distinct community or group of believers…Then this would have been better; as you are trying to infer political leanings here in this article.

Dr.Qadhi says: it is worth noting that every one of these groups considers the correct application of the term exclusive to itself, alleging that all other claimants are not representative of ‘true Salafism’

Who and where are these groups that considers the correct application of the term, Salafi only for themselves? Just because some people might affiliate themselves with something doesn’t necessarily mean they have the right to its association.

وﻟﻴﻠﻰ ﻻ ﺗﻘﺮ ﻟﻬﻢ ﺑﺬاﻛﺎ

Everyone claims to be in a relationship with Leila

But Leila doesn’t acknowledge any of them in their claims

Don’t the NOI () there in America claim to be Muslims?

Don’t the Jews claim to be the chosen people?

And doesn’t every sect of Islam from among the ones you acknowledge claim to be adhering to the correct way? i.e Shi’ites, Mu’tazilah, Ash-sha’irah and Sufis. It’s impossible for all of these groups to be correct as the Prophet (SallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

ﺗﻔﺘﺮق أﻣﺘﻲ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺛﻼث و ﺳﺒﻌﻴﻦ ﻣﻠﺔ ﻛﻠﻬﻢ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻨﺎر إﻻ ﻣﻠﺔ واﺣﺪة ﻣﺎ أﻧﺎ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ و أﺻﺤﺎﺑﻲ

“ My nation will split up into seventy three denominations. Each and every one of those sects will enter Hell, except one: those who believe like me and my companions.[8]

The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) warned that the Muslims would one day differ and divide up into 73 sects, but he said only one would be safe. It is the group of Muslims who believe like him and his companions. Aren’t the companions and Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) our predecessors?
