RufusJones and Quaker Unity HUGH BARBOUR he Society of Friends, for Rufus Jones1 as for Arthur Roberts,2 remains a single movement, called by God to a special role in T American Christianity and world history. Both men have also been realistically aware of human limitations and diversity. Yet they have seen God's power, shared in meetings for worship as well as in the religious expe rience of individuals, able to change human society and transcend human ideas and institutions. 1887, when Christ-centered Friends were brought together in Rich mond by their disagreements over ministry and sacramental Ordinances, was a time of great hope among American churches. Revivals and Holiness camp meetings aroused evangelical Protestants, while New Englanders were shown the creativityof the individual human spirit by Emerson, Low ell and Thoreau. -

English ministers visiting in America sided with one group of Friends and denounced the others as unsound. Thus it seemed reasonable and proper to recognize the yearly meetings called "Orthodox," and to ostracize the other branch called "Hicksite," which meant they were no longer to be thought of as Quakers. As other splits came in the United States, the British Friends chose in each situation to recognize one branch and ostracize the others. -

Since then there have been many, many members of the Society of Friends, who have tried, and successfully so, to follow the pattern as set forth by George Fox and the early Friends. In America Rufus M. Jones selected two persons as being the outstanding Friends of their particular century, John Woolman for the eighteenth, and John Greenleaf Whittier for the nineteenth. We of this century could rightfully nominate Rufus Jones to represent us in the present era. It is my purpose to give particular attention to John Greenleaf Whittier, and it is perhaps appropriate to consider how much we are indebted to Whittier not for his poetry alone, but for the many different facets of his character and life. Friends on both sides of the Atlantic have long sung the praises of Whittier's poetry, best exemplified in a letter I received from a member of London4 Yearly Meeting, in which he stated, " I owe far more to Whittier and Lowell than to all our English poets put together," and London Yearly Meeting in its Christian Life, Faith and Thought devotes almost as much space quoting Whittier as it does to George Fox ; and in commemorating the three hundredth anniversary of an outstanding event in Fox's life, it is not out of place to give attention to Whittier, the one hundred and fiftieth anni versary of whose birth is soon to take place. -

Inwardness is identified within the spiritual and mystical component of individual Friends’ experiences and discussed in terms of personal experiential knowing. Both academic and devotional discourses are used to clarify what is meant by ‘spiritual consciousness’, framed both within corporate, albeit mainly tacit, formulations of Inwardness, and expressed by leading exponents of Quakerism, at two different stages of the history of the Religious Society of Friends. The thesis makes an original contribution to scholarship in three ways: it identifies a distinct view of Quaker Inwardness in terms of process and state; it provides a new model of spiritual development through the Quaker worship practice; and it offers an explanation of spiritual maturity. -

AFFIRMATION MYSTICISM: THE ACTIVIST THEOLOGY OF RUFUS JONES CHRISTY RANDAZZO INTRODUCTION n 1917, the American Friends Service Committee was formed Ias a unified effort across the Anglo-American Friends world to respond to the ravages of the First World War. Rufus Jones was only one, amongst many, who devoted significant time and attention to that effort. Jones was the person selected as the Committee’s first Chairman, however, and remained its Honorary Chairman until his death in 1948.1 Jones’s prominent status amongst Friends internationally both as a writer and a weighty Friend influenced this choice. While his academic work likely played a role in building his “weight” amongst Friends, much of it was also driven by the reputation Jones gained as a spokesman for Friends. This was linked to his intentional project of re-unifying Friends, divided during the multiple schisms of the nineteenth century, with his theology of divine/human interdependence through the Inward Light. -
