STANDING UP FOR EQUALITY IN GERMANy’S SCHOOLS STANDING UP FOR EQUALITY IN GERMANy’S SCHOOLS 1 INTRODUCTION No country wants to believe that it is It is clear that children from a “migration failing its children in any way. It is difficult background”1 perform significantly to imagine a government that would not worse at school than their native German support the idea of equal education for counterparts. The term “migration back- all. Germany is no exception. And yet, ground” covers children from families in Germany, children of varied ethnic who are still perceived as “foreigners” and racial backgrounds have vastly because of their racial or ethnic identity, different educational opportunities and even though their families may have experiences. arrived in Germany years ago. This should no longer be a surprise. In 2001, an influential European study shocked Germans with the news that their country, which long had prided itself on its excellent educational system, was at the low end of the compara- tive spectrum. The study, undertaken in 2000 by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) (an arm of the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD)), showed that German children did poorly in reading, math, and science, in comparison to students from 56 other countries. The PISA study described the deep flaws in the German education system. In particular, it explained that at-risk students—including those of migration, or migrant, backgrounds—performed among the worst in the world. They were more often tracked into the lowest level Hauptschule; they were excluded from the best classrooms; and they had far fewer opportunities to attend Gymnasium, which meant they were not permitted to take the state Abitur examination and attend university.

I approach the question by exploring the ideas surrounding the creation of the Riben Bukvar, or “Fish Primer”, by Petăr Beron, published in 1824. This was the first Bulgarian textbook, and in contrast to coeval Bulgarian literature, written consistently in language based on spoken Bulgarian. The early years of Beron’s adulthood that led to the creation of the Fish Primer offer an illuminating perspective on the role of Greek culture in the Balkan society of the era. Special attention will be given to the influence of the well-known Greek scholar and educator Konstantinos Vardalachos on the thinking of the young Petăr Beron. One of the most recent contributions to the question of Greek influence is by Raymond Detrez (2008), who, by analyzing the shared “Romaic” identity of the Greek Orthodox millet of the Ottoman Empire, reaches the conclusion that the Greeks presented no threat to the emerging Bulgarian national consciousness. However, as some additional evidence points to the contrary, I begin by examining the conflicting interpretations of this much-debated question in Bulgarian historiography.

Together with the know-how partner "Bioenergie Wärmeservice Gmbh” from Köflach, an expert for district heating and waste heat recovery systems, a joint venture was formed into the company “Biowärme Aichfeld Gmbh”. The objective was to use the waste heat sensibly, in combination with an existing biomass heating plant and a storage solution with large-district- pressure reservoirs. The result allows for a sustainable, environmentally friendly and regional heat supply for more than 15,000 households in the greater Aichfeld area. For this purpose, the joint venture partners invested € 18 million and laid over 18 km of piping for the district heating project. This is a heat grid infrastructure project, to connect the cities, business and industrials parks in the region. The cities, business and industrial parks are served by ESCOS, which take over the heat from the infrastructure heat grid, and distribute the heat to the customers. BULGARIAN REVIVAL INTELLIGENTSIA Natural Philosophy System of Dr. Petar Beron Petar Beron was born at year 1800 in the town Kotel, “a miniature of Nuremberg”, in a rich family of handcrafts and merchants. In Kotel he received his primary education at the cell school of Stoiko Vladislavov and Raino Popovich. He went further to Bucharest where he entered the school of Greek educator Konstantin Vardalach. The latter, a famous for his time pedagogue and encyclopedist, had influenced a lot for the formation of Beron as scientist and philosopher. In 1824 Beron is compelled to leave Bucharest, because he participated in a “Greek plot”, and goes to Brashov, another Rumanian town, where he compiled “The Fish Primer”. This book was fundamental for the Reformation in Bulgaria and an achievement for the young scholar. In 1825 Beron enrolled as a student in Heidelberg University, Germany, where he proceeded philosophy until two years later when he transferred to Munich to study medicine. On the 9 July 1831, after successfully defending a doctoral dissertation, Beron was promoted Doctor in Medicine. Dissertation was in Latin and concerned an operation technique in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The young physician worked in Bucharest and Craiova, but after several years of general practice he quit his job and started merchandise. After fifteen years he made a fortune and went to Paris where he lived as a renter. Here he started a real scientific career. His scope was to entail all the human knowledge by that time and to make a natural philosophy evaluation by creating a new “Panepisteme”. His encyclopedic skills were remarkable.

  • Secondary School
Secondary school A secondary school is an organization that provides secondary education and the building where this takes place. Some secondary schools provide both lower secondary education and upper secondary education (levels 2 and 3 of the ISCED scale), but these can also be provided in separate schools, as in the American middle and high school system. Secondary schools typically follow on from primary schools and prepare for vocational or tertiary education. Attendance is usually compulsory for students until the age of 16. The organisations, buildings, and terminology are more or less unique in each Tóth Árpád Gimnázium, a secondary school in Debrecen, country.[1][2] Hungary Contents Levels of education Terminology: descriptions of cohorts Theoretical framework Building design specifications Secondary schools by country See also References External links Levels of education In the ISCED 2011 education scale levels 2 and 3 correspond to secondary education which are as follows: Lower secondary education- First stage of secondary education building on primary education, typically with a more subject-oriented curriculum. Students are generally around 12-15 years old Upper secondary education- Second stage of secondary education and final stage of formal education for students typically aged 16–18, preparing for tertiary/adult education or providing skills relevant to employment. Usually with an increased range of subject options and streams. Terminology: descriptions of cohorts Within the English speaking world, there are three widely used systems to describe the age of the child. The first is the 'equivalent ages', then countries that base their education systems on the 'English model' use one of two methods to identify the year group, while countries that base their systems on the 'American K-12 model' refer to their year groups as 'grades'.
