SAINT BENEDICT CENTER Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Post Office Box 627 Richmond, New Hampshire 03470 The Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary October 11, 2016 Dear Friends and Benefactors, Pax Christi. A writer usually writes about the things most on his mind. This is why one who writes ought to feed his mind on good thoughts that he can pass on to others. As I am writing now — considerably past by deadline, and therefore “under the gun” — I have on my mind two events that are upcoming, and many needs of the Center — most especially the need of male vocations. The first event that is upon us is the annual Pilgrimage for Restoration (September 23-25), a three-day, sixty-five mile walking pilgrimage from Lake George, New York, to Auriesville, New York, where we will pray in the spot sanctified by the martyrdom of three of the eight holy Jesuits known collectively as the “North American Martyrs”: Saints Isaac Jogues, Jean de Lalande, and René Goupil. We sing, pray, listen to spiritual talks from the priests, tell stories, and occa- sionally distract ourselves from physical pain with a little mirth and levity as we walk the way of the pilgrimage. It hurts. But somehow, when the walking is over and before one’s limp is gone, the pilgrims (most of us, I daresay, anyway) look forward to next year. The next event on the horizon — some of us will still be limping — is our annual conference (September 30-October 1.) Our theme this year is “Keeping the Counter-Reformation Going.” I have chosen to speak on another Jesuit martyr, Saint Robert Southwell, and my effort is dedicated to drawing lessons from his life.

Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Peoria, Illinois A Self-Guided Tour DISCOVER SAINT MARY’S Welcome to Peoria's Cathedral! In the middle ages, it was common for cathedrals to decorate their floors with elaborate labyrinths. These mazes in stone were very physical metaphors for the intentional wandering of the spiritual life. While there is no labyrinth in this cathedral, I invite you to wander nonetheless. This booklet is not designed to be an exhaustive historical guide or museum catalogue. This is not a theme park map to move you from point to point. Instead, we hope to provide a bit of history, a theological context, and an overview of this cathedral that is mother-church to Catholics across Central Illinois. I have been praying in this church both as a seminarian and a priest for over a decade. Over these past few years witnessing the grand restoration and parish life, I have especially been spending a lot of time here. I still never tire of wandering the church, talking to saints who are old friends, discovering new details in the windows, and gazing at the stars. I invite you to wander, to wonder, to pray. St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us! Fr. Alexander Millar Rector 2 HISTORY OF SAINT MARY CATHEDRAL In 1851, Bishop James VandeVelde of Chicago asked a Vincentian missionary, Father Alphonse Montouri, CM, to build a new church in Peoria, offering him $200 to carry out the plan. In a year, St. Mary’s Church (right) was built and was said to be one of the finest churches between Chicago and St.

  • Performance and the Making of Holy Persons in Society and Culture
Becoming Holy in Early Canada: Performance and the Making of Holy Persons in Society and Culture Timothy G. Pearson Department of History McGill University, Montreal March, 2008 A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Timothy G. Pearson, 2007 i Abstract The records and archives pertaining to the history of European settlement in what is now Canada are filled with hagiographic texts – documents that describe the life, death and miracles of individuals who were regarded as holy by their authors. While the names and vocations of many of these individuals (for example, Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf, Marie de l’Incarnation, and Catherine de Saint-Augustine) are well known to historians of early colonial Canada, what has not been explored is holiness itself, the way it was performed, recognized and written about, and the roles holy persons played in social and cultural life. In this dissertation, I analyze how local religious figures became holy and the social functions they played, in order to better understand the connections between religion and colonialism and the shaping of faith communities over time. The study covers a broad time period from the early days of French settlement in Canada to the late nineteenth century. The focus falls on New France and the holy persons associated with the early years of settlement when religion and colonization were intimately connected. It was only towards the end of the nineteenth century that these figures were put forward for official recognition by the church in canonization causes, and consequently I conclude the study with an examination of the processes and resulting documents that contributed to the transformation of local holy persons into saints.
