Called To Be Agents of God’s Love in The World Through the Eucharist, Family & Community

St. Patrick Mission Statement

A welcoming parish called to FAITHfully know, LOVE and serve God and Neighbor in the HOPE of heaven. Page 2 Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Dear Friends in Christ,

Gratitude opens the way to salvation. In the Gospel Jesus healed ten lepers but only one of them, a Samaritan, received salvation because he came back to give thanks. Within the time, leprosy was a terri- ble disease that ostracized the sick from the community. On hearing about Jesus, ten lepers asked for healing. Realizing they were healed, the Samaritan leper came back and prostrated himself before Jesus in gratitude. Jesus said to him “your faith has saved you.” This is faith: knowing who we are before God, gratefully coming to God at every Eucharistic gathering and worshiping God the healer and giver of all good gifts. These bring us closer and deeper to our salvation and eternal life which is to know Him as the one true and living God, to know Jesus His son, love and serve Him in our neighbors.

The nine ungrateful lepers, like those who live in the “me, myself and I” world only want to receive but never to sacrifice or to give back. They would not give to others nor to God the giver of all things. I am really encouraged that the people of St. Patrick are grateful people who love God and serve neighbor for the sake of God. Your recent response to Called to be Agents of God’s Love in the World through the Eucharist, Family & Community is a great testimo- ny. Thank you. We pray that those who have not had the opportunity yet may emulate the example of the grateful leper, please return your Commitment Card by October 20th. In addition, coming to Mass every weekend gives us the oppor- tunity for thanksgiving.

Mass/Eucharist is derived from Eucharistia which means thanksgiving. At every mass we come to thank God for all His benefits by offering to Him the most precious body, blood soul and divinity of His only beloved son, our lord Jesus Christ. “What shall I offer to the Lord in return for all his goodness to me?” I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise his name…” Psalm 116:12.

Please join me for ImaBridge Africa’s Eleventh Annual Fundraiser which will be held Saturday, November 2nd at Smith’s Central Garage. Complete information about the evening can be found on page 7 of this bulletin. Tickets can be purchased online at www.imabridge.org. Our dream of a full service hospital is becoming a reality due to your support and donations. Come and be a pillar of this dream. ImaBridge Africa is making a difference in the lives of many on a daily basis, but there is so much more we need to do. Please help make a difference.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Godwin

Increased Offertory Program 2019 (IOP) - “Called to be Agents of God’s Love in the World”

THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO THE 142 FAMILIES who have returned their Gift of Treasure Commitment Card for our Increased Offertory Program (IOP). Those who are still undecided will receive a letter from Fr. Godwin encouraging them and reminding them to bring in their Commitment Card by October 20th.

We also thank and praise the 15 NEW families who have recently joined GiveCentral and are continuing their Sunday Offertory electronically. This is an excellent steward- ship method so the parish may still receive your ongoing tithe in the event you were unable to attend Mass due to vacation, sickness, etc., thus not “missing out” on your envelope.

If you are unable to commit to an increased offering at this time, we still encourage you to return a Commitment Card in response and support to this parish wide effort. IOP Commitment Cards are available in the pews: Simply complete with your information and place it in the collection basket at Mass, or return it to the parish of- fice as soon as possible.

If you give online, please remember to adjust your automatic payments to match the new level of giving pledged: Simply scan the QR code below with your phone to login to your account OR, we can adjust it and/or set it up for you: Please contact Kenne at the parish office (815) 385-0025. Thank you very much and God Bless.

Ladies Guild Spice Drive

Since ancient times, herbs and spices have warmed our hearts and homes, healed us, aided in our beauty, and ele- vated our religious practices. The Bible mentions many herbs and spices in both the Old and New Testaments, where we see that in the natural world God has pro- vided us with incredible bounty when it comes to making our lives healthier, holi- er, more beautiful — and tastier!

Can you imagine Thanksgiving turkey without parsley and sage??? Or apple or pumpkin pie without cinnamon??

We invite you to donate a spice to be added to the Knights of Columbus Holiday Meal Program this Thanksgiving.

The Ladies Guild will have a collection box in the nar- thex from October 19th through November 10th. Thank you for your generosity.

Memorial Candle Lighting Mass Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 4:00PM Mass

As in the past, St. Patrick will again remember all our parishioners who have passed to eternal life in the past 12 months (November 1, 2018-October 31, 2019) along with family members of our parishioners who have died during this time. The Memorial Candle Lighting will take place at the 4:00PM Mass on Sun- day, November 16th (after Communion).

Family members of all St. Patrick parishioners who have died in this time period will receive a special invitation to attend this Mass and light a Memorial Candle during the Mass.

Any parishioner who has lost a non-St. Patrick parishioner family member or friend in the past year is also invited to partici- pate in the candle lighting. Candles will be available to be lit for each name submitted but you may also elect to purchase a Memorial Votive candle (that will have your loved ones name on it) that you can take home for a donation of $5.00. You may order more than one candle per person, but only one candle for each departed family member will be lit during the Mass.

As in the past, two easels will be setup in front of the Blessed Mother’s statue, where you may place pictures of your loved ones who have passed away. You may place the pictures (no larger than 5X7) on the easels beginning Thursday, Oc- tober 31st. We will leave the display up for the month of November and pictures may be taken home the weekend of Nov. 30th/Dec. 1st. Please put your name and address on the back of the picture.

If you wish to order a memorial votive candle, fill out the form below and return it to the parish office by Thursday, Octo- ber 31st. Please contact Carleen Murphy at 815-385-0025 or [email protected] for more information.

USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities

An unexpected chance for escape came to Isaac Jogues “Healing within Marriage from an Abortion” through the Dutch, and he returned to France, bearing the www.respectlife.org/healing-in-marriage marks of his sufferings. Several fingers had been cut, chewed, or burnt off. Urban VIII gave him permission to offer Mass with his mutilated hands: “It would be shameful that a martyr of Christ not be allowed to drink the Blood of Christ.”

Welcomed home as a hero, Father Jogues might have sat back, thanked God for his safe return, and died peacefully in his homeland. But his zeal led him back once more to the fulfillment of his dreams. In a few months he sailed for his missions among the Hurons.

In 1646, he and Jean de Lalande, who had offered his services to the missioners, set out for Iroquois country in the belief that a recently signed peace treaty would be observed. They were captured by a Mohawk war party, and on October 18, Father Jogues was tomahawked and beheaded. Jean de Lalande was killed the next day at Ossernenon, a village near Albany, New York.

Jean de Brébeuf was a French Jesuit who came to Canada at the age of 32 and labored there for 24 years. He went back to France when the English captured Quebec in 1629 and expelled the Jesuits, but returned to his missions four years later. Although medicine men blamed the Jesuits for a smallpox epidemic among the Hurons, Jean remained with them. He composed catechisms and a dictionary in Huron, and saw 7,000 converted before his death in 1649. Having been captured by the Iroquois at Sainte Marie, near Georgian Bay, Canada, Father Brébeuf died after four hours of ex- treme torture.

These three Jesuit martyrs along with five others Jesuits of North America were canonized in 1930. Montini News: Mrs. Adams sharing her love of music with Mrs. Hansen’s first grade class. Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time Page 7
