HAMBURG, GERMANY Arrive: 0800 Thursday, 05 September Onboard: 1800 Sunday, 08 September Brief Overview: With a population of 1.8 million, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, after Berlin. 50% of the city was destroyed in World War II, but today it is the “greenest” city in Germany, thanks to tree-lined avenues and an abundance of parks including the three lakes of Alster Park. Not only green in color, the HafenCity is the largest urban reclamation development in Europe and has won numerous awards for its eco-friendly blend of modern and historic buildings. Hamburg also boasts an incredible amount of waterways and 2,500 bridges, many of which are adorned with “love padlocks” -- a phenomenon that began in Italy and quickly spread across Europe thanks to the book I Want You by Federico Mocci. Surprisingly, Hamburg is third to New York and London in musical theater productions. The Lion King theater is a short boat ride across the harbor and may be seen from our ship. As new as musical theater is to Hamburg, it has nothing on the trumpeter at St. Michael’s church, who has been bugling to the four directions of the city every day at 10 am and 9 pm for three hundred years. Plan to be in the vicinity at least once during your port stay. Out of town: About an hour from Hamburg is Lübeck: the “queen” of the Hansa League (medieval precursor to the European Union) and a quaint town to explore with Professor Greg Mason. Berlin, with all its fascinating history and modern graffiti is an easy bus (3.5 hours) or train (2+ hours) ride away. The Germany of brats and fests isn’t entirely out of reach, but it is about 6 hours south in the state of Bavaria. On Your Own: The S-Bahn, U-Bahn, city buses, and your own two feet make getting around town easy. In addition, there are red “rent-a-bikes” (1,650 bikes that can be rented from 130 stands). If you want to rent one, register at the bike stand, online, or with the Stadtrap app. The first half hour is free, followed by 8 cents a minute with a max of 12 Euro per day. Bikes can be returned at any station (think Redbox or Zipcar). For outdoor enthusiasts, there is a five- mile trail around Alster Lake that is popular among Hamburgers (yes, that’s what they are called!) that begins at Jungfernstieg. Canoes, paddle boats, or sailboats may also be rented for some time on the lake.
